I mean if push came to shove I'd love to find a show with Carini, Farmhouse, Ghost, Birds of a Feather and Tweezer but is such a thing possible? I get songs that I just like and I run with it for a few weeks and right new Carini is my shit yo
Welp, holy shit. Had an incredible weekend at Watkins Glen. Half of the group I was with, including myself, was in GA camping and about a 1.5 mile walk to the venue. The other half of the group was in Glenn Close (VIP camping with tempurpedic mattresses). They just slipped us their wrist bands, so we hung out there a lot of the time. A lot nicer showers and they had bathrooms instead of porta pottys. So we're just sitting out there on Friday and up walks Tom Marshall... He was good friends with the people staying next to my friends so we were around him all weekend. Very very nice guy and very outgoing. I was very star struck at first, but was he was a genuinely nice guy and didn't mind a few nerds talking with him and getting pictures. The next day, my girlfriend and I are walking around the grounds near the venue and a very incognito Page McConnell walks by wearing his hat low covering most of his face. I would have never recognized him had I not seen a picture of him on Twitter just a few minutes earlier. My girlfriend recognizes him immediately and says " Hey Page!" and my jaw drops and I barely muster out a "Hey.....dude.." He looks at us and smiles and says "Hey, how you guys doing?" and keeps walking. A friend of ours (the one that's all buddy buddy with Tom Marshall now) sees him too and starts walking after him to try and get a picture. Page was promptly picked up in a golf cart and sped away. We were up against the rail on the soundboard for every show and it's the place to be. Has to be the best sound available. The friends and family vip area is directly beside the soundboard and the Kuroda's setup. I had never been that close to CK5 before and spent most of the 2nd set on Friday watching him. So awesome how he starts jumping up and down at the peaks of the solos. So, all weekend we were seeing the band's close friends and family. Met Steve Pollack and he was a very nice guy. On Sunday, I'm charging my phone at the charging tent and I see this older guy that looks just like Phil Lesh. I think to myself, "No way that's him". Get back to my spot by the soundboard and one of my friends says there a rumor on twitter that he and Bob Weir are there. Still don't know if it was him, but if it wasn't, it was someone who looks JUST like him. I was hoping for a little more Gamehenge, but can't complain. Overall, it was an incredible weekend and it seriously sucks to be back at work.
Know this is probably a longshot, but my dicks tickets fell through. Let me know if you guys happen to hear anything
yeah i'm buying those tonight. I had a guy from CoT that was going to sell me a 3 day pass since Saturday is sold out. He text me today and said his brother sold them already so I'm back to square one. How was your magnaball?
Haha, it was fantastic. I've been meaning to post a recap in here, but work and life have both been absolutely crazy since getting back to the real world. I think Friday was actually my favorite show but we're splitting the thinnest of hairs here. We were Page side, halfway between the stage and soundboard with just enough room to dance and breathe. I thought Simple was the absolute perfect opener and everything from that moment on was all downhill. TMWSIY was a real treat and Trey did it flawlessly for not having played it since 2012. Gin was a jam worthy of any era of Phish, and a truly transcendental moment for me. Easily the single greatest jam I've witnessed in person. It had pretty much everything you could ever want and definitely hosed us down to end the set. On a side note, I don't think I've ever laughed harder at a concert than I did when they busted out Mock Song . You just knew they were there to have a great time. I headed towards the laboratory right after Slave, and was able to catch most of Farmhouse and all of First Tube from up there. What an experience that was. The Saturday day set was what I expected - song heavy but bookended by two very good numbers. I called the Divided Sky opener, and as a result some dudes from California bought me beers for the rest of the set. We didn't go back to the campsite afterwards, deciding to hang out and ride the ferris wheel and explore the grounds during the day a little. For the night set, we set up shop inbetween the two relay speakers on Mike's side. The sound was great, there was way more room, and it was much easier to get a beer or take a piss during the show (for those that do that kind of thing.) I loved how quickly 46 Days ventured into the type II unknown, and the Tweezerpants was simply incredible. I've seen some people trying to discredit the Caspian in terms of saying it was really a Tweezer sandwich but that's idiotic. That jam was as good as any Caspian they've ever played, and I'm tempted to call it the best ever. Meatstick had us all doing the dance, and Blaze On was IMO the best jam they've done of any of their new stuff. The final highlight of the set came in the form of the very distinct MLB tease in Cities, which was close enough to jam status that I think I'll refer to it as such from here on. My brother and I heard it and looked at each other simultaneously with the biggest shit eating grins on our faces. After the second night set ended, we headed straight for the movie screen. I can't even begin to say how impressive the Drive-In jam was. I think they rehearsed certain elements of it to give them a general outline of what they wanted to do, but by and large that was 53 minutes of pure, unadulterated improvisation. It was ambient, haunting, uplifting, and mystical at times. Wow. Sunday, while still very good, didn't compare to the first two shows IMO. The jam if DwD -> Scents -> WTU? was easily the highlight to me. I was a little disappointed they didn't bring back the second jam in Mike's and Fuego just doesn't do much for me if they aren't going to explore at all with it. The first set was very good though, with Maze and Stash both being noteworthy. YEM was about as easy of an encore call you'll ever make, and I'll never complain about it, but part of me was hoping for Fluffhead. The fireworks to end it all were spectacular, and sent us all back to our tents with smiles on our faces. I missed out on the Pollocks and LandLand, but got all 3 of the Miller posters which I love. We explored all of the Gurt Institute and Labratory, which was incredible (especially with a head full.) The food vendors were great, the Magnaball Nalgene was the best $15 I've ever spent, and the whole thing couldn't have been put together any better. I saw where a Phish.net article ranked this as the third best festival of all time, behind only Big Cypress (duh) and It. Heavy praise indeed, but praise that is most certainly warranted. Top 5 jams of the weekend to me 1 - Bathtub Gin 2 - Tweezer -> Prince Caspian 3 - DwD -> SASS -> WTU? 4 - 46 Days 5 - Blaze On
Heard them a few weeks back but a guy who is generally pretty well connected shot them down at the time. Not something I'd ever see myself doing, but it'd be a great time for sure.
I do wonder how good the actual music would be. I kind of have the notion that the sets would be more along the lines of a Bonaroo or Jazz Fest than true Phish festival, Dicks, or other 3 night run.
I'm sure it'll be a great time, but I have zero interest in going. Will be infinitely more excited if this means a winter tour.
That being said, I'm all in on webcasts. Hopefully this means NYE tickets will be an easier score too.
Officially, no. The Knicks and Rangers will both be out of town while the Heat will be playing at home. Connect the dots.
Other bands have been doing these vacation excursion shows with great success. Sure Phish will have no problem selling these out quick. I was supposed to go to moes. In January, but just can't justify dropping the money right now.
