    The latest:

Friday's deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL Draft delivered good news, with several likely top 15 picks turning pro and options increasing for Miami at No. 12. Alabama inside linebacker Rolando McClain would be a logical Dolphins choice, but he might not slip to 12th. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has him rated 10th, one spot after Oklahoma State's Dez Bryant, the draft's top receiver, whose selection of agent Eugene Parker could stir concerns about a holdout.

So what does Miami do if McClain is gone and if Bryant is gone or not embraced by Dolphins management? Then the decision is complicated, to be shaped by March moves in free agency.

``McClain is a beautiful fit, but if he's not available, I would trade down from 12,''

    draftinsiders.com's Frank Coyle said.

On Kiper's ESPN Big Board, players listed 11th through 15th are Texas safety Earl Thomas (eight interceptions in 2009; would fill a need); South Florida defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul; UCLA defensive tackle Brian Price (at 300 pounds, not ideal for nose tackle in Miami's 3-4 defense, Coyle said); Clemson running back/returner C.J. Spiller (``the Dolphins don't have the luxury to take Spiller, as good as he is,'' Coyle said); and UF defensive end Carlos Dunlap.

Although a lot could change, Coyle said No. 12 is too high to take others who would fill Dolphins needs -- Tennessee 327-pound defensive tackle Dan Williams (19th overall by Kiper); Texas outside linebacker Sergio Kindle (24th); tight ends Aaron Hernandez of UF (16) and Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma (25th), and receivers Arrelious Benn of Illinois and Golden Tate of Notre Dame.

Several defensive ends could go in Miami's range -- Pierre-Paul, Dunlap, Michigan's Brandon Graham, Southern California's Everson Griffen, Georgia Tech's Derrick Morgan -- but that's not a big Dolphins need, and Coyle said Graham is the only one well-suited for outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, which is a Dolphins need. Pierre-Paul might be able, ``but he's so raw, asking him to make a position switch could retard his development,'' Coyle said.

Two big names -- Alabama defensive tackle Terrence Cody and UF linebacker Brandon Spikes -- are widely forecast to go in the late 20s or later.

    CHATTER

One Dolphins person was talking about the need for a John Offerdahl-type playmaker at inside linebacker, and consider this: ProFootballFocus.com, which analyzes every game, ranked Channing Crowder 112th and Akin Ayodele 113th among 116 inside linebackers based on 2009 performance. Each had 10 missed tackles, and Ayodele ranked last in pass coverage. The notion that Miami's inside linebackers don't make enough big plays ``has validity. It's fair,'' said backup Reggie Torbor, rated 106th. Miami appears more committed to Crowder than Ayodele, whose tackles fell from 106 with Dallas in 2006 to a career-low 70 in '09.

    • Ammunition for Joey Porter critics: ProFootballFocus ranked Porter's 2009 performance 62nd among 68 outside linebackers in a 3-4 defense, behind former Dolphin Matt Roth of Cleveland (seventh) and Jason Taylor (eighth). Porter's name drew a roll of the eyes from a Dolphins executive, and his future here remains in doubt.

    Re: Miami Dolphins Fans

If we land McClain, I will be absolutely thrilled...

We still need a big WR, but they will probably try and find another way to land one as I doubt Parcells drafts a WR with the 12th pick...

McClain would be a 5+ time Pro Bowler and is smart enough to quarterback the defense for the next 10+ years...

Depending on how the Big Three feel about the team in 2010, are they still wanting to be a power running, strong defense, If thats the case I would Love McClain...The Phins have HUGE problems at LB, Crowder and the other guy are middle of the road at best. If McClain is gone by 12 trade down

We might as well get Mcclain and make it a 3-3-5

I would say trade the top pick for Marshall......but our defense might become a major liability if we dont fill in some personnel soon

What about cutting wilson and going after sharper? I know hes old but maybe we can bring him in and he could be like our rodney harrison in NE. Guy is a ballhawking safety with great cover skills, so the complete opposite of wilson

u think he is gonna play another season?? I think he's gonna finish out in NO... if we could pick up a veteran safety it would really help - wilson is only good for watching the ball fly over his head

Completely agree about trading the 1 for Marshall if no McClain, does anyone know Marion Barber's contract status with Dallas, I would love to see him as the second running back, after Ricky Retires, which is after this upcoming season

There is no way both Dez and Mcclain are still there at 12th

We'd be crazy lucky if just one is there

Anybody know the possibly FA's this year at WR, S, and ILB?

If we can pick up a WR and ILB out of free agency.....I'd be ok with getting Earl Thomas at 12
  19. atlgator

    atlgator New Member

    Re: Miami Dolphins Fans

I don't really like Thomas, although we definitely need help in the secondary. I don't think Dez and McClain will be available at 12 either. Depending on how the combine goes, neither may be available at that point anyway.

I don't know if it's this year or next year that Boldin is available, or atleast I think he is. Although he is getting older and I wouldn't want to pay big money for him at this point.

Off topic kind of....How does NFL retirement work? Hypothetically if Ed Reed was to retire and then come back, would it have to be to the Ravens or does he become like a free agent?

It's a homer pick, but I really want to see the Phins get Brandon Graham. I know, I know enough with the UM players on Miami, but Graham is a beast who never takes plays off. Porter and Taylor (if he comes back) aren't getting any younger.
I don't see McClain or Bryant being around at 12. Earl Thomas wouldn't be a bad option either.

    Re: Miami Dolphins Fans

Will the Miami Dolphins purge bloated salaries?
    > Posted by Omar Kelly on January 18, 2010 11:17 AM

If the Miami Dolphins want to dump Gibril Wilson and his bloated salary, this is the offseason to do it?

While all of the secondaries failures can't be blamed on the team's starting free safety, who struggled mightily in coverage last season, Wilson certainly didn't prove he was deserving of the $27.5 million contract the Dolphins' decision-makers paid him last offseason.

Gibril wilson 6 In the coming weeks the Dolphins must decide if Wilson, whom they made the third highest paid safety in the NFL, is worth the $3.9 million he's due in base salary and a workout bonus ($50,000) in 2010.

If the answer is no, then the Dolphins can do exactly what Oakland did last offseason, admit they made a mistake and release Wilson, who contributed 93 tackles, eight pass breakups and one sack in 2009.

If the NFL owners and player's union don't agree to a new Collective Bargaining Agreement by March Wilson's release won't be accompanied by salary cap ramifications because 2010 is expected to be an uncapped year.

The contract Wilson signed last offseason guaranteed him $8 million. He received $5 million of that sum in a signing bonus, $2 million in a roster bonus already paid, and earned $950,000 in base salary and $50,000 in a workout bonus.

That means Wilson's received ALL the money he was guaranteed.

After 2010 he's due $4.6 million in 2011, $5.1 million in 2012, and $5.9 million ($500,000 from a roster bonus) in 2013. That a steep price for a strong safety masquerading as a free safety.

Those salaries are way out of proportion when factoring in Wilson's contribution, and shortcomings. But his future depends on whether or not the Trifecta is ready to declare him a failure, admitting they were wrong on their assessment of his skills.

But Wilson's release means a void is created in the secondary that must be filled by a free agent signing, or the elevation of Tyrone Culver or Chris Clemons.

Here's a look at a couple more players that might be on the Dolphins chopping block because of bloated salaries that don't match their production.

OLB Joey Porter – The Dolphins owe Porter $1.2 million on bonuses by March. If they believe the aging pass rusher is worth the bonuses, plus his $3.6 million salary in 2010 he’ll stay for at least one more season. If they decide they don't want him around he'll be cut loose, becoming an unrestricted free agent.

ILB Akin Ayodele– He’ll be 31 next season, and while he’s still productive (finishing third on the team with 71 tackles) he’s due $3.25 million in the final year of his existing deal. Ayodele is great in the community, and in the locker room, but he struggled with a couple of injuries last season.

ILB Reggie Torbor – The team’s backup inside linebacker had an average season (37 tackles, one sack, one interception), but is due above average money ($3.05 million) in 2010. While it's ideal for the linebacker unit to get younger, it's hard to justify letting both Ayodele and Torbor go in one offseason. Torbor also serves as one of the top special teams contributors.

CB Jason Allen– The team’s 2006 first-round pick hasn’t established himself as a reliable cornerback in two seasons at the position. He's due $1.27 million in 2010, which is a lot for a backup cornerback who primarily served as a special teams ace. But cutting Allen means they create another void on the roster. It's more realistic that he'll be brought to training camp and asked to compete for playing time.

Dolphins home gets another new name
Posted by Mike Florio on January 18, 2010 11:44 AM ET
As the Miami Dolphins prepare to host yet another Super Bowl, the venue is getting yet another new name.

Terry Lefton of SportsBusiness Daily reports that the team will announce on Wednesday that Sun Life Financial has purchased the naming rights to the stadium previously known as Pro Player Park, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium, Dolphin Stadium, and Land Shark Stadium.

The five-year deal will pay out roughly $7.5 million per year.

The prior arrangement with Land Shark Lager was due to expire before the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl; thus, the name of the place where the two prime postseason games will be played immediately will become Sun Life Stadium.

UPDATE: As a reader points out, we forgot Joe Robbie Stadium. And Dan Marino Can't Win The Big One Place.

Dolphin fans need to unite in this thread!

Step 1) Trade Ginn for a 3rd to 5th round draft pick
    Step 2) Release Jason Allen
Step 3) Find a way to acquire a bigtime WR without losing our number 1
Step 4) McClain somehow falls to us

Should be an interesting offseason with JT, Porter, Gibril, Ginn, and Ronnie news...

Inside source says JT returns if he has surgery, if he elects not to, he retires...

They really need a player like McClain to man the middle for the next 7+ years...

Team Needs, In Order of Importance IMO:

    1) WR - over 6'2", no more 5'11 180 WR
    2) MLB - McClain
    3) Safety - Gibril and Yeremiah are too similar...need to find a coverage safety
    4) OLB - JT/Porter are :old:, need some youth there
    5) TE - Fasano blew dick this year...Haynos isn't the future
    6) NT - for the future
    7) HB - Ronnie has had two season ending injuries, Ricky is gone next year, Pat Cobbs/Hilliard are not the future

    1. This is why im saying brandon marshall is perrrrrfect for what we need. 6'3 230 vertical threat with great hands who will open the under routes for bess like moss does for welker
    2. agree
    3. I agree we need a ballhawking cover safety to go next to bell, which is why i mentioned darren sharper. Yes hes 34 but he is exactly what we need. And he is showing no signs of his age after his 9 picks this yr
    4. I liked what i saw out of cameron wake, guy will be a pass rushing terror for years to come. Cut porter and his fat salary and replace him with wake and we easily wont lose the production(or lack thereof) that porter gave us this yr from that OLB spot.
    5. Im not sure ive mentioned this but haynos is my best friends cousin and i chill with him all the time. He said parcells love him. He actually has a pretty ridiculous contract, he gets paid 400 bucks per play on top of his base salary and since he was our starter this year he pretty much banked in incetives
    6. wouldnt mind taking mount cody in the 2nd rd as im almost positive he will drop out of the 1st due to his weight concerns and the fact that he isnt a 4 down player
    7. I was veeeeeeeeeeery impressed by what I saw out of hilliard at the end of the year. Although maybe not starter material i think he would be a great replacement for ricky

    1) Can we land Marshall without giving up the 1? Parcells would never do it, plus his infamous youtube video with him trying his hardest not to try, will steer us off...
    3) Wish we could land Antrel Rolle, he has been playing well at safety, crappy CB though in the NFL
    4) Wake is good, but still need an upgrade there to replace JT/Porter
    5) I'm pretty good friends with Pat Cobbs and have met a ton of the other players, that's why I was :ohnoes: when Hillard started to ball...want Pat to stay
    6) If our first two picks are McClain/Cody, I will be damn happy...Sparano will whip his :mangino: ass into shape
    7) It'll be interesting to see what happens

Imagine if we somehow landed Marshall/Rolle/McClain/Cody lol
