ATLiens is still VERY fucking good. It’s legit incredible that these guys made two albums of that caliber and then you have the rest of their catalog that is every bit as impressive
Oh yeah, for sure. Not down playing ATLiens at all. I love that album too. Just for me, Aquemini is on another level.
I played this album on my way to my daughter’s soccer practice the other day and she asked my what are we listening to and wanted me to put on Taylor Swift. I told her to be quiet and enjoy greatness.
lol. My proudest achievement as a dad is my youngest daughters love for OutKast. She has t-shirts and everything.
She’s sings along to a couple of songs like Hey Ya and B.O.B, but isn’t much into anything else. She’ll come around.
We listen to Taylor so much that she has me singing along to her song too. The other day she asked me if I was a Swiftie
ATLiens dropped my frosh year at FSU, Outkast toured a bunch of small venues to promote the album. I was only 17, had to convince the bouncer I was 18 and my driver’s license was in the mail. Homey asked me to tell him the truth and I said, there’s a girl here I really like and I’ve never been to a concert before and I love Outkast. Ended up marrying the girl and I still love Outkast.
I know your stance on the matter and respect it but you will have a tough time convincing the rest of the world that SPCM is their best
Is this your opinion? If so, it’s wrong. I would listen to arguments that ATLiens is #1, but Aquemini is at worst #2 in their catalog.
The cool thing about their catalog though is that it hits so many notes as it goes. the southern bounce the conscience rap the electric synth the funk pop rap neo soul broadly different experiences album to album yet the identity stays intact
Imma say this. As a youngin who discovered Outkast back when SPCFM dropped. Whose world changed once hearing the southern flow. Who brought the CD to the west coast and the PNW and made tape copies for countless friends. As a man who just told ya’ll how important ATLiens is to them….I don’t hold any biases against Aquemini but a buncha people started sucking Outkast splootie ootie ishes once that album dropped and it really annoyed me. Around campus it really felt like white folks latched on to Aquemini and acted like they discovered some new rap group. It was a really fun social experiment around campus.
Aquemini is probably my favorite but I was sucking them off well beforehand. Definitely started getting annoyed with the Ms Jackson era of fans (still love Stankonia)
This feels right, the post Aquemini era was really got annoying. Aquemini got nominated for RAOY and that’s when the world discovered them. I tried seeing them at Freaknik and only the Atlanta peeps knew who and where they were. After Aquemini, everyone knew.
Soul Food in 95 prepared for living in Tally. Taking notes so I could infiltrate and blend in. Lick off all the yellow…. SPCFM in 94 SF in 95 ATLiens in 96 Aquemini Stankonia What a fuckin run for southern music.
Oh man add that Houston shit in there (UGK, Devin, Zero, etc). I rarely listened to the no limit stuff and was constantly fed with excellent southern rap.
Devin should get way more credit than he does. The way he blended rap and R&B with that sing song styling was ahead of its time and is currently the movement and you never hear him get any credit for it.
Southernplayalistic is always criminally underrated. The people who don’t like it, tend to be the same who love Speakerboxx/Love Below, which is far and away their worst.
Sat 10 feet away from Big Boi on the roof of an embassy suites in Scottsdale before the Bama / clem Natty and it was the best musical experience of my life
Was friends with a bunch of break dancers/pop lockers. One of my buddies asked me to pick him up from a location he was filming a music video. I show up, and I see OutKast and Goodie Mob. I had no idea. I go there just as everything was wrapping, and saw Busta Rhymes running away laughing (he had apparently started a food fight at craft services, by climbing in a table and kicking food at people, or something). It felt like I entered an alternate universe for like 15 minutes.
I see now lie here “First of all I stand a little more than five feet tall but we can still brawl nigga I ain’t scared at all I guess you niggas don’t know or can’t see that it ain’t even wise steppin to me incorrectly “
Here is where Dungeon Family becomes so near and dear to me Before that time H-town/Memphis were the closest I could get to what I felt represented living in the fuckin panhandle of florida MyIntroToLetUKnow was like that 1st hit of good weed as a youngblood
There was just perfect harmony and collaboration from that entire crew. Everything from the center (OutKast, YoungBloodZ, Goodie Mob) out to the peripheries (Slim Cutta Calhoun and Big Krit who probably never got the mainstream play he deserved.)
There was a video that came out around that time for the life of me I can’t remember whose it was. It was a trippy Dr. Seuss like caterpillars neon hallucinations and shit. Thought it was Slim Calhoun. It’s going to bother me until I can remember it.
OutKast is the best from the at era in my opinion but would like to mention a couple of favs from the past like; Way too many to post. I’m just an old man shaking his fist at the sky with most newer shite.
Yeah but… The Atlanta sound was different. It put so many future artists in a place to succeed and gave a voice to a region that wanted a foothold in music. Also, Mind Playing Tricks On Me is a #1 seed for best hip hop song ever.
I don’t disagree. I’m down in south Alabama and loved all of the sounds coming out of the ATL. I was just pushing random hip hop from the nineties. I miss it. That’s why I love Spotify tho
I was on MARTA Thursday and listened to both of those as I rode through East Point etc. up to North Springs. Always do when I make that trip.
