FourFourTom @FourFourTom People are saying "Congratulations to Celtic on winning the 2012/13 SPL title" as if the 13/14 and 14/15 titles will be any different...
this sucks. even though it will be nice to go on a 4 or 5 year run of SPL titles, this is going to affect us in Europe. basically, we will go from not being competitive on the road to not being competitive in any European matches. Rangers wasn't playing CL football this year anyways iirc. just Europa since only the winner of the SPL gets to play in CL after the 2011 coefficients came out.
I'm 100% ignorant of Scottish football, but why wouldn't the other teams want the Rangers in the league? It would be like MLB kicking out the Yankees or the NBA kicking out the Celtics. It just makes no sense for anybody.
So, it would cost all the other teams money to let the "new" Rangers into the SPL? More than they stand to lose in their TV contracts, gates, etc. by not having the most recognizable team in their league? The one article I read on this subject said that their new tv contracts hadn't been signed yet, and wondered how no old firm games would affect that situation.
Sure they will lose money, but now the rest of the teams have a better chance at making it to Europe(CL or Europa). Obviously Celtic will probably win for the next few years and get CL, but for Scottish teams, Europa is a good source of revenue. You can't view this like you view the Yankees/Celtics examples. The promotion/relegation system is what makes this acceptable. Because in 2 years they have a good shot at being right back in the SPL if they spend their money right and bring in the right kind of players at each level. The point is, they fucked up on the business side of it, and letting them stay in teh SPL would have basically let them off the hook for years of poor management.
Sky Sports News @SkySportsNews Breaking news: Rangers' transfer embargo put back until after summer transfer window
Yeah if they didn't get that there would be no way they could really field a team. Will be interesting what type of players they will get. I can imagine they will be offering much higher wages than most teams even up to the SPL.
They pretty much started their back 4 from last season including Boca. They've also picked up a few guys recently that have SPL experience
If I'm clearly not good enough for English top flight and am assured I'd be paid my wages, I'd have no problem as a player going to Rangers. You'd be a club legend if you helped bring them back which has to be inevitable, right?
You would think so but who knows. They would be smart to play a lot of youth and get them seasoned for the return to the top flight in a few years.
