Struggling to follow what’s happening on the pitch in rugby? Use these handy pointers to get to grips with some of the basic rules and terminology of the game: Offside: A player is offside in general play if he is in front of a team-mate who is carrying the ball, or in front of a team-mate who last played the ball. Forward pass: An illegal pass to a player who is ahead of the ball; a player is not allowed to pass the ball forward to a team-mate. Knock on: If a player drops the ball ‘forward’ – that is, towards the opposing team’s tryline – or loses possession of the ball and it goes forward, a scrum is set, with the non-offending team getting the scrum feed. What goes on at the tackle: A tackle occurs when a standing player (the tackled player) is held by one or more opponents and brought to the ground, and/or the ball touches the ground. Any opponents of the tackled player who go to ground are known as tacklers. Foul play: Play deemed by the referee as being dangerous, obstructive, unfair play or misconduct. The offending player is penalised, possibly sent to the sin bin or even sent off.
Try: A try is worth five points. It is scored when a player places the ball on the ground with downward pressure in the in-goal area between the try line and dead ball line of the opposition's half. Tries can be scored in a number of ways, other than running over the try line and putting the ball down. They include the pushover try, scored by driving the opposition's scrum back over its own line; the momentum try, where a player slides into the in-goal area; and the penalty try, awarded when a team illegally obstructs the opposition to prevent a certain try from being scored. There is no such thing as an "own try". If you touch the ball down in your own in-goal area, it results in a kick or a scrum. Conversion: If a team scores a try, they have an opportunity to "convert" it for two further points by kicking the ball between the posts and above the crossbar - that is, through the goal. The kick is taken from a point level with where the try was scored. Penalty kick: If a side commits a serious offence, a penalty is awarded and the opposition can take the option of a place kick at goal from where the infringement occurred. If successful, it is worth three points. Drop goal: A drop goal for three points is scored when a player kicks the ball from hand through the opposition's goal. But the ball must touch the ground between being dropped and kicked.
I have a friend who plays on the Bama club team finally teach me all the rules and how the sport works, so I will be tuned into to watch the rugby world cup. The first match I have ever watched was the one last weekend between the AB and Australia which was a hell of a way to start.
Yeah I know, but I had him there to explain anything I didn't understand so it turned out to be a great teaching tool.
Working/traveling..Just happened to luck up with being in Wellington so I'll get to see a few games hopefully. Most of the games after pool play are in Auckland though, I believe. Which sucks but if I can get more tickets, I'll probably fly up.
When the Springboks were here back in July it was insane. That was my first ever Rugby match..If I have 4-5 weeks of what that night was, I may not make it out of NZ alive.
2 more days It's unreal how much prices have gone up here. Thankfully I work at a bar and get free alcohol..It's expensive as is, but at it now.
My roommate is in NZ for the entirety of the tournament. I'm not even a big rugby fan but I'm jealous.
Recorded the game and watched it this morning. The intros in rugby are awesome. All Blacks haka may the best pre game tradition in all of sports. Is argentina v england gonna be available?
The sad fact for you guys is that Ireland are going tear your arseholes a new on Sunday. Dunno what your TV situation is for the England v Argies game but whilst it is going to be a very close game, the style of rugby will put you to sleep.
Pretty pumped for the Ireland game. My dad's from there so we'll probably have some family over and shit.
That opening ceremony was fantastic. I am convinced that nothing on this earth brings the entire world together better than our shared love for sports.
I'm guessing by the way Scotland just dominated right there that Romania hanging in with them till now was kind of a shock?
I dont know much about Romania so I would guess it was a shock that they hung in there for that long.
