Stadium Porn Behold The Insane Silverdome Plans That Could Bring MLS To The Motor City Jason Davis, October 7, 2011 One of the things that makes the constant MLS expansion chatter so intriguing is the tantalizing stadium plans that pop-up in concert with the bids. Detroit might not top most people’s list of candidate cities for an MLS franchise, but their stadium plans, if these renderings are accurate, are top-notch. The group behind the MLS expansion bid in Detroit, a Toronto-based family real estate company, scooped up the unused Pontiac Silverdome (former home of the NFL Detroit Lions) for a paltry $583,000 back in 2009. The plan was to renovate the building into something that could lure an MLS team to the area. Since the purchase, the Silverdome’s new owners have staged international friendlies and Gold Cup matches in an effort to prove the efficacy of Detroit as a soccer market. But since the structure is ill-suited to being the home of an American team as is, the group made known their concept of a multi-purpose venue with three distinct arenas. Yesterday, Motor City Supporters, a fan group leading the campaign for MLS in Detroit, posted an image of the plans for the new Silverdome. The plan would turn this: Into this: The plans call for three venues in one, with the soccer stadium sitting above two 20,000-seat arenas. Rather than incorporate a stage into the soccer stadium as so many MLS teams have done in recent years, the Silverdome plans call for an entirely separate amphitheater that won’t interfere with the soccer operations. The roof would also be changed, turning the dome into an open-air stadium. The cost for this type of transformation would seem to be astronomical, but we’re crossing our fingers it gets done just because it looks amazing. In the meantime, we could do with some more renderings.
Even with the proper support aren't they going to have to lower the field level in order to fit those two stadiums down below?
I guess they got the idea from Lille's new stadium, but should just demolish the upper deck and you'll have a nicely sized MLS stadium. The engineering costs on this plan would have to be enormous.
shame on me for not reading it. I looked at the picture and just assumed there was no roof for the sake of being able to better see the layout visually. Field turf or natural grass?
The soccer stadium is support by an air draft like the collapsed Metrodome roof. The Silverdome has the same roof structure so by removing it they can use the draft fans to support the football stadium above the two lower venues.
Let em do it. Can't wait for the eventual "Silverdome disaster, kills all 322 fans" rolling across my ticker.
