When it is all said and done, just go run. If you get 3 days a week in for the next 6 months, you will be pretty prepared come March/April.
Thanks for all the responses guys, I guess just the thought of running anything over like a mile seems crazy so I figured I would need more than 3x a week but it seems that's on consensus. Any suggestions of things to do between those days, or how to structure it? Also on MapMyRun app, if I "minimize" the app but keep it running will it still track as normal?
If youre starting from zero - just use the rest days for the first few weeks. Then add in some light weightlifting, stretching/yoga. Also recommend you find a 3k or 5k to run in too. It will be motivating for you. It was for me at least. My first summer running, I started by training for the Shamrock Shuffle in Chicago (8K) then kept it going and worked my way up to the Soldier Field 10 Miler, then the half Marathon. I was kind of hooked after that. Races are fun and really motivating. I started the same space as you. Probably hadnt run a mile since high school. Played mostly team sports and sprinted, never ran distance.
I believe you need to build a base slowly over the next 6-7 months. Everything before Christmas should be small distance increments. You should be able to run 4-6 miles easily 3 days a week come January/February. 8-10 weeks out from your half marathon, I would up your distances (at least one run a week). You'll thank yourself later when you build your endurance slowly. Consistency is key, if you take more than 2 weeks off, you might as well be starting over.
Yep starting from scratch basically, played baseball through HS would run maybe 2 miles max during conditioning. It's been about 8 years since then. My goal is to be able to do 3-4 miles by end of 2016 (why I'm following couch to 5K plan now). Then start 2017 in good condition to be able to start training for the half. Now that I've decided to tell people I'm doing it (for accountability) I want to pull it off. Also will help jumpstart my diet again.
This couch to 5K thing I'm sure you guys all know is interval style. So like you run 60 seconds, walk 90 seconds and alternate for 30:00 the first week. Then it goes to 90/90 I believe. And so on. Is this the best way? Or do I just run until I can't run anymore and try and beat that every week? Haha
I would say it depends on how out of shape you are. If youre going from a couch potato, interval is probably the best to get the stamina up and your heart working. If youre in decent shape, Id probably just start running distances like in the higdon training. It's more about getting your body use to running for longer periods of time and the wear and tear of it. Also -if you haven't already - go to fleet feet or a running shop and get fitted for a good pair of running shoes. Well worth the investment.
Follow the program. Some days you'll be like "that was easy". Enjoy those days bc soon some days will suck and you need those past good runs to remember they all don't suck.
Following the program can't be overstated. It will feel like not enough when you are thinking about 13.1 miles, but your longest mileage week during training is only 21 miles. Don't overthink it. It's designed to get you ready and stay injury-free. And it works.

Was running 5 miles this morning, first 3 was at a 9 min pace. Then all of the sudden I had to shit really bad, with just under 2 miles to go, I had to stop at a gas station and was on the toilet for 5 minutes. Finished the last 1.8 miles at an 8:25 pace. Felt so good.
Definitely, enjoying it so far, like I said I wasn't so much questioning the program more questioning my ability to complete a 5K then 13.1
Start by walking. When you can walk for about an hour straight at a brisk pace start running. Run as far as you can then walk and when you catch your breath run. Do this over about the same distance you began walking for an hour. You'll soon be able to run what you walked. From there try and start a program.
4.5 in 37. I think I've been over training because my legs felt dead when I started out. I pushed through. What do people use for water on longer runs and how far do you guys think I should try and run without drinking? When I was younger I could run about 10 miles without water. I don't know if that is good. I just don't want to carry water on runs. TIA
Lately, I have been drinking over 100oz a day, even on non-training days. Longest I have gone over the past month is 55 minutes and I am not dying of thirst. Works for me.
We do water/Powerade when it's 7+ miles. We drive to a parking lot off the path, then use it as the halfway point so we can grab drinks and leave thhem in the car for after. For the half, I'm going to try to do drinks after 4, 8, and 12. Seems like good spacing, and just enough liquid - some water and some Powerade.
I have a friend trying to talk me into heading up your way in December for The Christmas Story run. Ever heard of that one? I can't imagine running Cleveland in December, bit it looks like fun. Still, will probably have to wait a year.
I dont know how out of shape i am compared to you but i just hate the beginning when the training schedule say jog 3/4 mile walk 1/2 mile jog 1/2 mile. Like i cant measure that shit in the field without having a running watch or something. Now i have a running watch so it doesnt irritate me. And now i just jog for 2 or 3 miles so it doesnt matter anyway.
I'm in Chicago, not Cleveland. Don't put that evil on me! I haven't heard of it, but I'll have to check it out. Winter is always hit or miss, but it sounds like a fun run at an awful time.
2 miles in 18:30. 1st mile was in 8:06 , 2nd was obviously over 10. Not sure when I'm going to start cranking it up in mileage and speed. Ol lady has been talking about a 5k in October, maybe next week I'll start picking it up.
Going to either cycle or do a brick (20 bike 3 running) today. Hoping to wake up early on Saturday and do at least 4.5. I am going to grill and maybe have a few while enjoying CFB. Don't want to fall behind on my training.
I haven't drank in a month and a half. Yesterday I went to Costco and they have the Oktoberfest brews in stock. God damnit. So I'll stick to doing my long run during the week. Skipping gameday and running early Saturday morning and taking Sunday off instead of Saturday.
Wife accidentally donated my old jeans when I bought new ones. I'm about 10-12 lbs away from them being a comfortable fit. I have a trip in 14 days where I'll need them. Gave up flour, sugar, alcohol, and any kind of carbonated beverage until then. Gotta have pants to wear. Talk about motivation tho ...

It's amazing, other than the humidity a few days we've had. Can't wait to see how nice it is to train through the end of Oct - those long runs should be amazing.
Ran 12.5 miles today around 11:15 clip. Today was supposed to be my long run for the week and I was planning on doing 17 miles today. Ran for the first time with my new running belt. It was nice, felt comfortable and did what I needed it to do. About 10 miles in I noticed two round blood spots on my shirt where my nipples are. I was like "WTF", I looked inside my shirt and both my nipples were bleeding. It didn't really hurt, but I was alarmed by it. I was a few miles from home, so I decided to cut my run short. After doing some research when I got home, nipple bleeding can happen to men when running longer distances. Basically what happened was the belt around my waist was on the outside of my shirt. This made my shirt tighter against my body then when I usually run with a light jacket. My nipples were being chafed by the material of my running shirt, causing the bleeding to start around 6-7 miles in. Now when I run with the belt, i'll have to have my shirt over it instead of under. It was a bit embarrassing showing my bleeding nipples to my g/f, but now I know I'm not alone. I was pissed I cut my run short, but if my nipples bleed again, I'll just have to power through next time.
Nipple chafing sucks. My wife didn't believe me till she saw my nipple raw one time. Been using Gold Bond Friction. I've used most of the stuff they sell at running stores and this is as good and a little cheaper in price.

13.9 miles @ 9:29 pace tonight. That shit was brutal. I did not prepare properly for that distance. Ran Tuesday and Wednesday and should have rested more.
