It's funny you said that - I was pondering if I even wanted to run the half next weekend or not. I'm mentally exhausted overall, and ready for it to be over.
I feel better when I get out there and run. I am just tired of the structure of the "training" part. I paid, raised money so I am not going to not run but I think from now on if I I'll sign up for stuff I am just going to run and not follow a program.
I really only get super motivated to run after I eat like shit for a meal or weekend or I haven't worked out in general for more than 2 days. legitimately am addicted to working out multiple times a week or I get really stressed and anxious. I feel like I'm a border collie some days
Starting week 7 of C25K tonight. 2.5 miles (25:00 jog). Will definitely be the longest I've ran in 10+ years. Played in a softball tournament Saturday and somehow my legs and back are sore AF, but can't take more than 3 days off of C25K. Was shocked my legs are this sore considering I've been running so much.
Finally broke through the change of season laziness to do close to 10 miles today. Did it with my sister's 25 pound dog that I'm watching, the dog hasn't moved much in the 4 hours since we've been home.
Looking forward to buying some new shoes in a week or so. I usually go cheep and practical over expensive and comfortable, I think that might change on my next pair.
4 @ 11:21/mile Set out to run 5, but it started pouring so I turned around. Didn't want to ruin phone, watch, and headphones.
I was there until taking the boys to cheer on my wife in her half last weekend. It's a women's themes race and totally marketed that way. Probably more than 95% female field. Still, I was jealous as hell and wished I'd been out there with her.
Shoes, especially running shoes are the last thing I go cheap on. I've had too much Plantar Fasciitis and Shin Splints in my life to increase that possibility again. Speaking of which, I'm due for some, damnit
Did about 2.25ish miles each the last two days, C25K says I should be at 2.5. My breathing is surprisingly fine all things considered, but my legs and back are sore as hell for whatever reason this week.
I'm taking a week off after I finish, then cutting back significantly (1 short and 1 longer run per week). Over winter I'm going to work on dropping some weight and adding some muscle, basic body re-shaping. Around March I'll start back up again to prep for Cedar Point half in early June.
Have a 10 miler in 2 weeks and thats my last long race for the year. Was thinking about doing a Thanksgiving Half, but I don't think I could do that and enjoy Thanksgiving. Might do a local 5K Turkey Trot instead. Then need to find a good Winter Plan. Probably gear up for another Half in March.
Strengthening my core helped with my lower back pain while running, looks like you are already trying to work it in which is awesome.
I figure some core work as well as the weight loss that is coming with the diet+running will help my back
I'm planning the same. Ironically, it's tough dropping much weight while logging this many miles. I'm running this one close to 10 pounds lighter than I ran the first and I'd like to get another 10-15 off before spring. I'm fairly strong, so while I have plenty of bad weight to lose, I'm somewhat limited on reshaping. I can get leaner, though. By January, if I like where I'm at, I may start to consider doing the full Flying Pig in May. Just to do one then I can go back to shorter races. You should look into the Pig, by the way. It is a fantastic race and better event. You really never hit a stretch without screaming fan support.
How do you know when to take a day off? Like how many miles is too many to go running the next day. I have always lifted 3x a week and ran 1x but really starting to enjoy running and not as familiar with guidelines on how to break it up as I am with weights
I'm at 30% body fat. Didn't lose any weight training for this one, but dropped 2% bf. Want to lose another 10% and add some upper body muscle. Dropping another 30 lbs would be awesome, as it's tough when you weigh 230 to run longer distances. I would consider something else, but my wife is already set on Cedar Point (again). Not that I mind, it was a fantastic event, without the half as part of my consideration. Really hope the UBHM lives up to what I have in my head. Had a great experience in the Ville earlier this year, and if I enjoy it again these will probably be our annuals halves.
Core work will help. I'm an idiot for stopping, and need to keep that as part of my training. Overall, I just need a training overhaul. Plus I'm burnt out as shit, just in general, from this year. Exercise isn't giving me the extra energy I need (or at least I hope not!) at this point.
When you first start I wouldnt run more than 3-4 days a week. Dont do two hard days in a row and dont increase your mileage by more than ten percent every two weeks. Get a good pair of running shoes.
Thanks. I did 4 mi yesterday and it felt good af, like the first time I experienced the "runners high" probably. Wanted to go again today but will hold off til Thursday
I have been doing more interval running and weights lately but I did my first 5k in roughly 6 months. Did it in 26:04. Aiming to get back to under 24. Any have any programs they would recommend?
Finally got my mile down to 5:45 again. Im out of shape tho as far as distance running goes. Any tips to keep a 6-6:30 pace for 4-5 miles. Got to two miles and now I'm dead.
I'm really kind of bummed about missing the Urban Bourbon, but the Mrs. really wanted to do the Queen Bee and once I was on my own for a half, I decided to keep it local and do Kings Island. I'll be interested to hear your review.
Last update. The car (as we thought) was a total loss. Luckily the insurance paid it off and we even got enough for the down payment on the new one. Ended up getting another accord exl. It is amazing that the accident was Saturday and we have the the check and a new car on Wednesday. There are some real POS out there. Someone called our insurance company and attempted to say they were part of the accident but fled. I guess they thought our insurance company was going to say okay we will cut you a check too. Unfortunately for them fleeing the scene of an accident is a crime. Attempting insurance fraud is a crime so hopefully when Flo gets on the case they'll be able to do something to them.

11.5 in 1:42 about 9 min a mile pace. Mile 8 killed my average I think I ran/walked it in about 12. I finished strong.
Head out at 7:00 and get 3.5 in 28:30, take care of some things around the house, then my girl asks if I want to hike with her. Sure, another 3 miles round trip with a 1000 foot elevation gain.
Anybody done Hash House Harriers here? Met up with the group here in BA and had a great time. Would've been nice to know we were running a 10k before we left though...
I've been gone for 3 weeks with work and haven't done much while staying in the hotels. Struggled to do 2 the other day at just under 10min/m. Followed it up with 2 consecutive days of 4 miles decreasing splits of 9-8-7-6. Not sure what happened but I had zero lactic acid build up either of those days. Felt like I could have done another 4 more at 7:15ish pace
6 miles @ 11:45/mi today. Not really ready for the half next weekend, but if I feel as good as today I'll be fine.
Did my last run on Thursday morning. 13 miles at a 10min clip. Felt good, but glad I have taken a couple days off to rest up the legs. Tomorrow is the Big run. Over 30k participants ranging from the marathon and two half's. I'm as ready as I'll ever be, now it's time to get some sleep before heading downtown at 5 in he morning. Run starts at 7 am, should be finishing up around 11:30am. Sounds like it will be raining tomorrow, but not super cold, which is good. I have run many o time in the rain so it doesn't bug me. I'm sure I'll have an update/recap come Monday. Good night everyone.
I found your time. Nice job running 2nd half of the race faster than the 1st. How did it go? Did you PR it?
My hips are sore as fuck today. At least I know I can finish the half in under two. Have to not have a meltdown for a mile like I did yesterday. It has given me pause about doing another full. Don't know if I'd want to invest the time and effort. I might just stick to halves and 10ks. But we shall see how it goes in two weeks.
Ran a half at 7:03 this morning, I felt fucking great. I took it pretty easy this week only running 36 miles and my legs feel great. Probably gonna run about 40 this upcoming week and then take it really easy the following two before my race.
Thanks Kinghill. Wow what a day! This was my first Marathon, so I guess I set my PR along with setting a new PR in distance. The furthest I went in training was 21 miles. My goal was to finish at 4:45 or better with hopefully negative splits the entire way. Here is my race recap. Got downtown, parked and had just enough time to take one last piss and then the race started. Downtown Detroit was bumping at 6 in the morning, a lot of amped up runners. Unfortunately, I didn't even get a good stretch in. I also forgot where my placement was, they had about 10 different flights. I just saw a pacer sign for 4:00 hours and jumped into that flight. As soon as I started, I was getting passed by Everyone. Old ladies, guys in hotdog suits, I felt like a 75-year-old man out there. To be fair though, we were mixed in with the half marathoners as well. The first 3 miles I went out pretty slow, but that was planned. I had to fight the urge to speed up with all these people passing me. I really took the first 7 miles pretty easy which was mostly on the Canadian side (Windsor). There were some great views running along the river on the Canadian side with a perfect view of the Detroit skyline as the sun was coming up. Once I got out of the tunnel back on US soil I started to pick up my pace. The roles reversed and I started passing people on the regular (which continued for most of the race until about mile 23). I felt good from mile 9-12 and once we parted ways from the half marathoners I really started to find my stride. There was much less traffic after the 13-mile mark, and I could settle into a steadier pace. There were bands on the side of the road playing music, tons of drink stops and even your occasional beer stand. I did not take a beer while running, but maybe I should have. I felt good up until about 18 miles, then out of nowhere my left hamstring completely cramped up. In my 6 years of getting back into running I have never experienced this. It made me stop right away and I had to rub it out for about 30 seconds before slowly starting to run again. I was actually running alongside the 4:25 pacer, but once I pulled up with my hamstring, I could never recover and catch up. The hammy was a bit tight the rest of the way, but never had to stop again for it. Mile 18-22 was on an island in the middle of the Detroit River called Belle Isle. It is a wide open large park basically with some bike trails and such. It is a tough stretch of the race because it can get windy and it has these long stretches that seem to go forever. Once I got out of Belle Isle at mile 22 I started to feel it. That is when the rain started to come down, and it was coming down heavy. I didn't mind it and either did anyone else around me. From mile 22 to the finish was tough as shit. I kept telling myself to "just keep pushing, don't stop you pussy, not now". I was fucking with my thoughts because when I got to mile 25, I told myself that I had 5 more miles to go. It may or may not have helped me finish, but those are some of the things you do at that stage in the race I'm sure. I finished at 4:34, here are my mile splits. Mile 1: 11:36 Mile 2: 11:31 Mile 3: 11:39 Mile 4: 10:53 Mile 5: 10:21 Mile 6: 10:40 Mile 7: 10:07 Mile 8: 11:18 - Was mostly up hill coming out of the tunnel from Canada Mile 9: 9:35 Mile 10: 9:48 Mile 11: 9:46 Mile 12: 9:20 Mile 13: 8:53 Mile 14: 8:40 Mile 15: 9:35 Mile 16: 9:40 Mile 17: 9:52 Mile 18: 10:06 Mile 19: 9:51 Mile 20: 10:45 Mile 21: 9:53 Mile 22: 10:25 Mile 23: 10:38 Mile 24: 10:24 Mile 25: 10:54 The middle part of the race was my best, unfortunately I ran out of gas to close it out. Still happy I had a faster 2nd half than the 1st. Overall very happy and thrilled I got to experience that. It was tons of fun, it was really cool to run with a bunch of other people and the crowd turnout was excellent. I told myself I was going to do this once and that would be checked off the bucket list, but I could see myself doing this again. Thanks for allowing me to share my journey, I wish the best to all of you with your upcoming races. And No, I will not be putting my 26.2 stick on my car.
I wonder what would have happened if during mile12-14 you kept the pace around 9:30? Maybe could have gone the rest of the way without slowing down to >10:00? Thanks for sharing! I'll be doing my first in 2 weeks!
