Is that true for everybody? I can't even hold myself back, I want to run, so like the 11 minute mile that RunKeeper tells me to go at for these early training days, I don't know how to operate at that pace. Then again, I just failed to finish my run today so...
It actually is more stressful on my body for me to run that slow. If you could manage getting a HR monitor a good way to track that stuff would be to just stay in your aerobic zone.
Odd observation about shin splints: I've started not tying my shoes as tight and my shin splints have kind of gone away. Maybe causal, maybe not, but I'll take it.
Philly half today PR 1:43 or 7:55/mile pace. Perfect weather. I'm from south Florida and this was the first time I've run in 40-something degree weather. Loved it.
Daniel Ocean you asked me this pages back but just finally kopped my new shoes. Got Nike Pegasus something or other. I've always worn Nikes but went in with an open mind to try any brand. Dude measured me and let me try four and it came down between Brooks and Nike (over Saucony and Mizuno). Both felt really good but Brooks was just a little too "squishy" and also Nike was $10 cheaper so I went with those. Paid $110
Walmsley redefines what's possible in JFK 50 Mile WILLIAMSPORT — Heading into Saturday’s 54th annual JFK 50 Mile ultramarathon, two-time defending champ Jim Walmsley talked a big game about blowing away the field and smashing the course record. As it turned out, his actions were even louder than his words. Walmsley, 26, of Flagstaff, Ariz., prevailed by more than a half-hour as he became the first man to win the JFK three straight years. His performance was seemingly otherworldly as he completed the challenging 50.2-mile course from Boonsboro to Williamsport in a record time of 5 hours, 21 minutes and 29 seconds — averaging 6:25 per mile. Anthony Kunkel, 24, of Durango, Colo., was the runner-up in 5:52:08. Michel Owen, 27, of Pomeroy, Ohio, placed third in 5:56:02. The previous JFK record was 5:34:59, set in 2012 by the legendary Max King. “I don’t know if it’s really sunk in yet, but it’s just amazing when things work out,” Walmsley said. “Max King is no joke, and to get one of his better records is just huge.” JFK director Mike Spinnler was blown away by the outcome. In 1982, Spinnler won the race in 5:53:05 — a record time that stood for 12 years. On Saturday, he compared himself to Ralph Boston, the former world-record holder in the long jump, who was the Olympic bronze medalist in 1968. “When it became evident with about 3 miles to go that Walmsley was about to take more than 10 minutes off the course record, I realized how Ralph Boston must have felt at the 1968 Olympic Games when Bob Beamon jumped 29 feet, 2 1/2 inches when the previous world record was not even 28 feet,” Spinnler said. “Ralph Boston said to one of the Russian jumpers that in comparison to Beamon, ‘We are all just boys.’ “All the previous JFK record holders, including me — we are all just boys in comparison to what Jim Walmsley just did.” On Saturday, Walmsley was racing the clock from the get-go, all alone in first. He completed the first 15.5 miles, mostly comprised of the rugged Appalachian Trail, in 1:44:12, building a 15-minute lead. He covered the next 26.3 miles on the C&O Canal towpath in 214, extending his advantage over Kunkel to 24 minutes. He ran the final 8.4 miles of rolling roads to the finish in 55:03 as he padded his lead by 7 more minutes. “I was watching splits all the way through,” Walmsley said. “The gun went off, and I wanted to run my time trial. I was thinking maybe someone would go with me. But at the same time, if someone went with me, it probably would have been a mistake for them.” Kunkel was happy to win the race for second place. “If it was three weeks ago, I would have found out how long I could have stayed with (Walmsley), but I’ve been sick,” Kunkel said. “But it wouldn’t have been to the end with a time like that. ... I was just racing strategically to make sure second happened without too much drama.” Walmsley, whose previous best time on the course was 5:47:37 from his victory last year, said he’s not sure if he’ll be back next year to try for four in row. “JFK has been a focus for the fall the last three years, and it’s reached a point where I can now say I’ve done something that no one else has done at JFK,” he said. “I’m just going to step back a little bit and soak it in.” JFK regular Michael Wardian, the 2007 champ, took the masters (40-and-older) title Saturday, placing fourth overall in 5:58:50. Just six days earlier, he won the Las Vegas Marathon in 2:38:04 while setting the Guinness World Record for fastest marathon in an Elvis costume. “I got the masters win and another sub-6:00 today. I was happy with that, especially with all I’ve done this year,” said Wardian, 42, of Arlington, Va. “I’ve run a marathon almost every weekend this fall.”
So I'm working on my two mile time. I can run my first mile in like 7:45 but the second mile will be 12 minutes. What's the most efficient way to get better at that second mile? Should I run longer distances to build endurance? Or do I just focus on speed?
Unfortunately this strategy doesn't really help. All the time I save on the second mile just adds time on the first
People that lift as well as run, how do you space out your week so that your soreness from leg day doesn't interfere with your running? Ideally I'd like to lift twice a week and run 2-3x
I just do it every other day. I lift m/w/f and run or cycle t/th/sat. My strava rides that show no distance are actually gym days. I don't generally do cardio on gym days since I hate cardio indoors. Obviously I don't do "leg days" just full body workouts on gym days.
For me, it just means my next run after leg day is shitty. Although the last few weeks I've gone leg day -> yoga -> run which seems to help a little bit.
I run twice a week and lift 5. A typical type of schedule I'll have is this: Sun-Back and Arms and core(to include dead lift) Mon-Run (under 5 miles) Tues-Leg Day Wed-Chest and Triceps Thur-Run (Over 5 miles) Fri-Shoulder and Core(to include hang cleans) Sat-either run or do back and arms, whatever hurts less That's what I plan every week and makes sure if I have to have a rest day, it doesn't mean I miss something.
I just hate how the day after squats you feel like you can't run for shit. Sucks feeling slow but I assume the extra effort required to move your dead legs is good cardio
Ran a 5k this morning that had pretty intense hills. Depressing how many children under the age of ten were faster than me.
Ran my first ever 5k this am 28:27. Would have broken 28 but got within sight of the finish and had to pull up. First time I've ever felt like I'd vom from running. But I didn't It was a hot morning and I had a few drinks last night so I blame that
Rarely do races. Just run on top of my gym routine. I have gotten a lot faster in the past year or so.
I slept in and missed my 5k. Will be making some life changes after this weekend and getting back on the train
Ran 4 in 31 this morning. Felt good to get out there on thanksgiving. Really thankful to be able to run. Will stuff my face without any guilt today.
There were like 630 people in the race I did and I finished ~230 or so. Pretty cool how you can look up online after and see how you did against others your age etc
Yeah and the course had ridiculous hills. I googled the guy's name, he is a senior on the ASU track team.
Eugene Turkey Trot. 4 miles 6:51 a mile: 35th overall and 4th for my age group. Really fun, i think I'll make it a tradition.
I haven't ran in about 2 weeks. Came down with a terrible cold and my lung and energy level have been low. Starting to come out of it. Can't wait to go on a run 4-5 miles and feel like it's my first time again.
the post thanksgiving struggle is real ran out 1/4 of a mile, said nope and turned right back around happy holidays
Thats a great question. The race is a loop in a sense that you run 2 miles east cross the bridge then run 2 miles west, cross another bridge and finish, so maybe just because it works better for the course ? It is a weird distance though.
3 plates of turkey dinner Lots of alcohol 6 slices of pie ...apparently is good run fueling. 7 miles @ 8:43.
