Bamboo on 2nd Asian restaurant opens in downtown Birmingham Bamboo on 2nd, a new Asian fusion and sushi restaurant from the owners of the former Tavern on the Summit, has opened for dinner in downtown Birmingham. The restaurant began dinner service earlier this week and will open for lunch soon, Bernie Smith, one of co-owners of Bamboo on 2nd, told AL.com today. Dinner hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 5 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. "We will begin lunch in the near future, but we want to make sure we have our kitchen operating efficiently before we do," Smith said. While he had hoped for a quiet opening, Smith said word about Bamboo on 2nd has gotten around on social media, and the first few nights have been very busy at the restaurant. The menu features sushi rolls, noodle bowls, small plates, a variety of skewered and grilled foods, and Asian-inspired sandwiches, Smith said in a previous interview with AL.com. Abhi Sainju, a native of Nepal who has operated Everest Sushi catering, is the executive chef. Smith and Sam Fallaw, who have been in the restaurant business together for 25 years, are the co-owners of Bamboo on 2nd. Smith and Fallaw previously owned Tavern on the Summit until it closed in December 2013 after more than 15 years in business. Bamboo on 2nd is at 2212 Second Ave. North, across the street from El Barrio restaurant and bar.
What's the new beer place in Homewood? Apparently, filling growlers for $10 today. Edit, neighborhood hops and vine 2nd location.
Bamboo doesn't have their liquor license yet but you can bring your own bottle of wine. Food is fantastic, plus the sushi menu is identical to the one he had at Blue Monkey.
Who all went to slossfest last night? I thought they did a great job with it. Modest mouse was pretty badass and I wish I was there today to see sturgill. But Jesus Birmingham needs a better public transit system. No taxis to be found on our way out.
We stopped by there on Friday and they told us it was going to be an hour and a half wait. lolwrongnumber
Just spent five days with a few friends back in town. I've been wanting to move back to Bham for a while and this just reinforced the decision. The gentrification around Southside is amazing.
This is hilarious to me. Brook just flexing that muscle... if any other school in the state was as blatantly doing this I wonder what the uproar would be like
He's moving to go to a better school. It's much more justifiable than all of the kids who move from Woodlawn to go to Wenonah or Central Park Christian for basketball.
Haha come on tegg...is this like "this blantant cheating is not as bad as this other blatant cheating"? You coulda just said they caught lighting in a bottle
Normally I'd agree but, as stated in the article, this kid has known Bucky and his family for a long time. It's not quite as blatant of a recruiting job as it probably seems. No where near as egregious as the time in the 90s when the father of Mtn Brook's star athlete QB/Shortstop/Point Guard bought apartments in town for the families of two young star athletes from somewhere in west Birmingham. One was Mr. Basketball in Alabama his senior year and both went on scholarship to play basketball in the SEC. (One later became a Globetrotter.)
Hell, they did it with Major Ogilvy. I wasn't defending Mountain Brook, I was just taking issue with the suggestion that it would be a big deal elsewhere. That's high school hoops around here. Good for the kid.
So, there's a new indoor go kart track in Birmingham that sounds pretty legit. It's located off 459 (exit 6....exit between the Hoover Met exit and the McAdory exit). It's open 7 days/wk (until midnight on Fri and Sat). Cost $40 for three races M-Th and $50 for three races Fri-Sun. http://www.autobahnspeed.com/birmingham-al-indoor-go-karts/
Left Sloss last night just after Avett finished up. There were 5 cabs waiting and no one was taking them. Maybe it was worse Saturday night but I didn't notice.
BTW, year one of Sloss fest Add another day to it next year and get a few more food vendors in there next year. Couldn't locate a turkey leg in 100 miles.
Looks like they added a couple more water stations on Sunday. Hopefully they add a few more next year.
Capable of going 50mph but looking at that one view of the track it's probably impossible to find enough space to accelerate to anywhere even near that speed.
You're right. Not really any straight aways capable of getting that fast. That being said, they looked pretty quick. I'll try to get someone to go up there with me in the next couple days and post a review.
So, the women's national soccer team is going to be playing here on 9/20. Tickets go on sale next week. Birmingham chosen as one of the 10 cities on their victory tour.
Finebaum was bashing Birmingham's cabs on his show today, too. It won't be much longer, especially now that it's become such a big talking point. We'll have Uber before the end of the year.
It says you can't be 300 pounds. Tegg and I can claim discrimination and he can start a suit if they don't have one that fits us
