What game reserve are you doing? I've read the ones near Cape Town are kinda :meh:

We're trying to figure out if we'll do Kruger or fly to one in Port Elizabeth.

I went to Saigon and Bao Loc... Saigon (to me) is the shit, and I love it there. It's not much like any other city I've ever been in, and it almost felt surreal like a spy movie or something. It's definitely in my top 5 to 10. Also had 2 suits made, and they were both under $100 so that was badass as well.

Also... After hours and hours of research I think I'll just do Vienna for 2 days. It's the only thing that makes logistical sense. I think the plan is to land at 9, hop on the 10:40 train to Vienna and be in Vienna by 6:30... Then 2 days in Vienna plus an easy direct flight to Athens on Saturday morning for less than $100.

I tried everything in order to be able to go somewhere cool, but nothing made sense with flights to from Zurich and then XX city to Athens.

So, where did y'all stay in Vienna? I'm thinking Wombats, but there are 2... The one at Naschmarkt looks like the better one. The other hostel with good ratings is called the Ruthensteiner. Although, for a comparable price I could also stay at the Marriott Courtyard.

    Ruthensteiner

I stayed at Wombats. It's nice and very clean. Almost like a hotel but they had a pretty nice bar downstairs.

I had the best pizza in my life at a place called Mafioso or something like that. The front desk sent me there. Also Wombats is walking distance to the big group of museums.

I only went to the bar once and it was only for a few minutes in the middle of the day. I was really only there for 1.5 days and just tried to stay in my room and recover from Prague.

Another choice we'd have is Innsbruck for a night and Vienna for a night... 2 days is already short, so that is why I'm thinking just roll straight through to Vienna and have some shrimp on the barbie for dinner.

Probably the best bet really. And go to that pizza place, it was amazing and you could get a whole pizza for like 5 euros.

    This is the place...

The Naschmarket was pretty cool, but I didn't really go out in Vienna. Some girls from there I met later said a club called passage (passages?) was were they and all of their (hot) friends go to.

So out of pure curiosity and a general wanderlusting mindset, I was looking into places in South America. Bolivia and Peru seem like they'd be great places to visit, with awesome destinations to see. Also, both seem relatively inexpensive. Anyone been down around that area? Again, just out of pure curiosity.

I've done Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina. Machu Picchu is a must, but im not sure there's anything else that must see in Peru. My one good buddy went to Bolivia and didn't say anything special. As I think I've said in this thread before, Buenos Aires is a top 3 city in the world for me. Medellin is probably top 10. Minus machu pichu, I'd opt for Colombia, Brazil, or Argentina over Peru or Bolivia personally.

Going to Peru in August. Like PJP3 said, I'm mainly going to do a 4-5 day hike to Machu Picchu. Cusco is supposed to be an incredible city, so I'll report back. I've also had friends that told me Peruvian food is the best they had in South America (I've heard this from 2 separate people that spent 6+ months traveling SA).

But I think the main draw in Peru is Machu Picchu. And if you're into Ayahuasca, up in Northern Peru in the Amazon at Iquitos. I'm doing a ceremony in Pisaq, can't fucking wait.

Didn't know you've done Peru before. Where'd you hit up?

I had a buddy living in Lima about 5-6 years ago. He's a goofy white kid from Colorado and actually brought back and married a hot Peruvian girl. Stayed with him for about a week, so got maybe a bit of a more local experience and enjoyed Lima as opposed to most people who seem to hate it. Also went down the coast a bit, stayed in a beach town called Playa Hermosa. Went to Asia, which is the summer party spot. Went to Huacachina for a few days for dune buggying and sandboarding, then went down to see the Nazca lines. All of it was fun, but nothing I'd necessarily rush back to see. Had plans to go to Macchu Picchu but a huge storm hit that washed everything out including the railroad and closed macchu picchu until they could rebuild everything. Have had enough friends do the hike and rave about it that I will make it back down there at some point to do it.

I don't know if Peruvian food is the best in SA though. The roasted chickens they do are good, but besides that it was pretty plain latin food. Rice, beans, plantains, giant mutant corn. There was sliced beef heart on a stick that was pretty good. Cuy (guinea pig) is really bony and suger greasy like duck. Amazing fruits though. I'd say the food in Argentina and Brazil was both better.

Any suggestions on a backpack for Europe? I'll be gone a little over two weeks in about a month. I'm not sure on what size I would need. I plan to take a lot more trips going forward as well, but I doubt that anything would be over 2-3 weeks.

I was looking at this potentially, but I really have no clue. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003GBYX7G...olid=22D0M1HI3KS8K&coliid=IZ97J45LPSVES&psc=1

I figured I would ask here first.

Give us a little more. That is too big as a carry-on, is that ok?

This is the one I got, which is just small enough to carry on in Europe and it's great. Same brand, so you're probably fine if 70 is ok with you.

Everyone has different preferences... Before you pull the trigger I'd stop by a backpacking/hiking store and talk to the folks that work there about backpacks for travel and see what you like. Most people like the bigger ones than the one you linked, but one of my buddies used one that size and it worked fine for him.

My backpack opens from the side versus the top which made it easier to pack when I overslept and was scrambling to get to an airport or train station on time. I guess just go see what you like in person? Having the ergonomic straps around your waste are crucial though.

I have an older version from eagle creek that I love, this size you should be able to carry it on if you detach the backpack which is nice and there should be enough space for the length of your trip. also has a lifetime warranty regardless of how/if it breaks

I have the same Northface I used in college. It's not nearly as big as some of the others posted above, but it's been fine for me. I also pack incredible light and usually do laundry 3-4x while I'm gone.

That's the one I have. It's technically too big to carry on but I was 2/4 when taking it as a carry on without them saying anything. Only thing I highly recommend is getting one with a detachable daypack, that thing comes in clutch. That eagle creek 60L one above looks like a good choice.

I just got a pack for Asia, consulted with my friend who owns a backpacking shop on the Appalachian trail. Some of the ones he recommended for 2 weeks of traveling and not carrying stoves and other shit you would use on something like the app trail are ULA camino 2 (what I got), ula cdt, granite gear virga 2. I like the suitcase style opening on the camino 2 and the 55L seemed like a good size so I went with that

Admittedly I don't know a ton about it, but he's a subject matter expert of sorts

Alrighty... Wombats Naaschmarkt is booked in Vienna. I also booked the Kahema Grand Zurich hotel near the airport Saturday night after Yacht Week. After that shit show it'll be nice to have some luxury in my life.

I booked a superior double bed private which really wasn't much cheaper than a hotel, but I'd prefer to just be in a hostel with a sweet bar sometimes.

Thanks for all of the replies, guys. I think I am probably going to go with this one. I would rather have something lighter that is easy to carry on. I also have amazon gift cards I want to use and didn't see any of that ULA stuff on there.

47 straight I should be fine for 2 weeks? If so, I'm going to go ahead and get this one.

I have used it for multiple trips of that length but I always had access to laundry at some point on my trips. If you're taking shoes, wear them. The pack can hold flip flops but shoes will take up too much room.
