    Lot of disappointed rednecks today.

Take pride in the fact you were gifted an easy regional, even though you had a weak record against the good teams on your schedule, to allow you to make it this far.

Yeah, I think we'll be pretty good next year. I'm assuming Webb is gone, but hopefully Crowe can step up and fill in there. Plus Reagan and Johnson come back.

Losing Cone, DTW, and Mooney hurts, but we bring back Destino, Bride, Hopkins, and the Cortes kid is supposed to be an unreal hitter.

Yeah, Webb is gone, but getting back Wil Crowe makes up for it. Next year we can roll out Crowe, Schmidt, Hill, Johnson, Reagan. Then add in highly regarded Cody Morris will be finally healthy.

Also agree with your sentiment about the bats. Those guys hurt, but you still got a good core coming back, and a lot of them were young (Hopkins, Tolbert, Stokes, Cullen etc.) and should get better. Plus I do think John Jones bounces back and becomes a good player for us.

Also for anyone who doesn't have TBS. Here is what Whittle wrote on our players and whether they are going.

    Will they sign?
Infield signee Joe Rizzo: Round 2, Pick No. 50 by Seattle Mariners - It shouldn’t take long for Rizzo to agree to terms with the Mariners. He may have gone a dozen or so picks later than expected, but he still ended up in a strong draft position and will begin a professional baseball career. Confidence he signs: Very high

Freshman pitcher Braden Webb: Round 3, Pick No. 82 by Milwaukee Brewers - Webb went right around the area he was projected and is slotted for a signing bonus of around three-quarter million dollars. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he gets a little bit over slot money. Confidence he signs: Very high

Junior outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams: Round 5, No. 158 by New York Yankees - Thompson-Williams went a round or two higher than I expected and he’s certainly in a good position. He should sign pretty quickly with the Yankees as well. Confidence he signs: Very high

Junior outfielder Gene Cone: Round 10, Pick No. 310 by New York Mets - Cone went as projected as well sneaking into the Top 10 rounds. Even though his career at South Carolina is likely over, he’ll be in Columbia fairly quickly playing for the Fireflies. Confidence he signs: Very high

Senior shortstop Marcus Mooney: Round 10, Pick No. 289 by Atlanta Braves - Mooney had an incredible season for the Gamecocks and was probably second behind Cone in the team MVP race. He’ll obviously sign with the Braves as he’s out of eligibility.

Junior pitcher Taylor Widener: Round 12, Pick No. 368 by New York Yankees - Widener’s fall to the 12th round was the most surprising of the draft for players with South Carolina ties. Some viewed him as potentially a fourth round pick. Regardless of his draft position, he’s still expected to sign. There’s a chance he could get a little bit more than the $100,000.Confidence he signs: High

Outfield signee Carlos Cortes: Round 20, Pick No. 610 by New York Mets - Cortes tweeted during Day 2 of the MLB Draft that he looked forward to getting to South Carolina, implying that he would still be an amateur, not a professional, come July. The Mets can sometimes throw a little bit of money around, so he’ll be worth monitoring anyway. Confidence he enrolls at South Carolina: Medium

Junior pitcher Wil Crowe: Round 21, Pick No. 632 by Cleveland Indians - Behind the scenes, Crowe has said for several months that he would be back at South Carolina. His signing bonus demand, he felt like, would not align with what professional teams would be willing to pay. Come draft time, he was exactly right. He’s informed the coaches he’s coming back.Confidence he returns to school: Very high

Junior pitcher Matthew Vogel: Round 25, Pick No. 750 by Tampa Bay Rays - Vogel’s opportunities have been very limited this season but he still has a fastball and breaking ball that can wow the scouts, so the Rays took a flyer on him. With the bulk of the pitching staff returning next season, it’s hard to imagine Vogel gets more chances, and he probably knows that too, so he’ll begin his pro ball career. Confidence he signs: High

    Notes
-- The MLB Draft went pretty much as expected for South Carolina with one nice surprise. There hasn't been a lot of optimism that Cortes would be a Gamecock in recent weeks, but the team caught a break as it appears he'll skip the draft this season and enroll at South Carolina. Cortes is expected to enroll in summer school for the July session but he will still have until the July 15 deadline to negotiate with the Mets, if he so chooses.

Cortes, assuming he stays at South Carolina, will be the highest-ranked player to ever enroll. He is ranked as the No. 27 player in the country by Perfect Game. While he's ranked as a catcher by the recruiting service, he is expected to play left field for the Gamecocks. He could also get a look at second base.

-- Redshirt junior Wil Crowe has known for a while it was very, very unlikely that his career at South Carolina was over. Believe it or not, his signing bonus demand was actually higher this season than it was coming out of high school. The staff has been operating for a while under the feeling that Crowe would be back, but they have been cautious in their optimism. There were a few teams, including the Indians, who ultimately drafted him this year, who have been monitoring his progress closely and showed a real interest in picking him early, despite the injury.

-- Left-handed pitcher Rian Haire was one of the guys scouts loved last summer. The fastball and size were intriguing, but there were two big factors that worked against Haire this season. First, he has Scott Boras as an advisor, and some teams won't work with that company. Secondly, and more importantly, he didn't have a great senior year. His fastball velocity wasn't quite there and he had some issues mechanically. Add into it that Haire is a year younger than most players in his recruiting class, it was an easy decision for him to come to school. He should be ready to pitch for the Gamecocks next season.

-- There were a few scouts who were by to see left-handed pitcher Josh Gregory over the course of the season. Scouts love his upside and athleticism. It's very, very unlikely he would have gotten enough money to consider going pro, but Gregory had labrum surgery recently and that scared away any potential suitors.

You guys said we need a "whisperer" right?

Muschamp, USC roll out garnet carpet for OrTre Smith
All-day visit includes a departing whisper from Gamecocks’ coach
    BY PHIL KORNBLUT

    Special to The State

South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp got the chance Monday to make his strongest pitch yet to Wando High wide receiver OrTre Smith, and he didn’t fumble the opportunity.

Smith (6-4, 210) and his mother spent about eight hours with the Gamecocks and make a thorough examination of the school and the football program.

“They kind of pulled out all the stops this time,” said Smith’s mother, Tashia Green. “We spoke to the president of the university. We spoke to athletic director Tanner, Dr. Guy, the academic support team and the coaches, etc. They pulled out all the stops. I heard so many coaches tell me, ‘You know Ms. Green, coach said I don’t care what’s going on here, OrTre Smith is on campus and he is the number one priority today.’ I was just like, ‘You guys can stop telling me that. I get it, I get it.’ It was really a good, a good visit, really laid back and relaxed. They always treat us really good.”

Ms. Green said Muschamp cited her son’s academic achievements and his leadership skills.

“He knows I’m really big on academics,” she said. “I know he kind of pounded that, too. But what was really the funniest thing and the cutest thing to me was, when we were leaving for the day and Muschamp gave me a hug and I walked on out. OrTre was the last to leave and he whispered to OrTre, ‘I need you.’ He just doesn’t make it a secret by saying that Tre is a priority for the 2017 class.”

The day before visiting USC, the pair visited Georgia and also enjoyed a favorable experience.

“We sat down with Coach Smart and he discussed the importance of academics and he wants to improve the football team’s GPA,” Ms. Green said. “He’s just looking for athletes that can excel not only on the field but in the classroom as well. The first thing he talked about was being impressed with OrTre just taking care of his business. He just went on and on and spoke of his academic achievements. It was more relaxing to me because I always hear football, football, football. I’m like, he has to eligible before he can play football, that’s just what it is in my home. If you don’t get your grades, you don’t play. I don’t care if the coach says you can play, you will not play. Every coach knows that. Both of them, USC and Georgia, they did their research.”

Muschamp and Smart both got the message from Smith’s mother, as other coaches they visit will, the school she endorses will be the one that convinces her it’s the best all-around fit for her son for life, not just for football.

“Like I told both of them, especially Coach Muschamp, I always tell them, ‘Tre is my boy, he’s my baby, and I don’t care if he grows to be 6-6, he’s still my baby, and I need to know who I am dropping my child off to,’” Ms. Green said. “I want to make sure they take care of him. I said I don’t care if he starts or doesn’t start because Tre is going to come and work hard regardless. It’s not about competition for Tre. He is going to work.”

Part of USC’s presentation, according to Ms. Green, was a video showing all of the South Carolina natives who have come through the Gamecock program and who are there now.

“I told him (Muschamp), you better come at him really hard,” she said. “It’s not me you have to focus on. You really have to come at OrTre hard because he has to be convinced.”

Smith and his mother will hit the road again later this week. They will visit Clemson on Friday with plans on being there most of the day. Smith on Saturday will join up with his godmother in North Carolina for a visit to Chapel Hill. His mother will not make that trip because of sports duties with her younger son.

Smith tentatively has set his birthday of Sept. 11 for his decision announcement.

There is someone out there who committed to Clemson like a month-ish ago who we are still going after. I thought it was Ortre up until yesterday.

I know Shi Smith recently committed and we got a qb from Wren or somewhere in state. That is pretty much it for my knowledge of this class.

Nice. A new bar/restaurant is gonna open on Gervais where Back Porch used to be. This is a critical element in the cityscape as we need a steady stream of bars to link the Five Points and Main Street/Vista districts. Opens next month

New restaurant finds home at 1616 Gervais
For 15 years, Susan "Susu" Morningstar spent her days as promotions director of ROCK 93.5 and FOX 102.3FM.

Her hobby, however, had been cooking and enjoying being creative with recipes and taste combinations.

"Several people have always suggested I open up my own place," Morningstar said. "However, I had no clue how to do such a thing. It turns out that I have a few great people in my life who knew how."

That place is new eatery 1616 Gervais — formerly home to The Back Porch restaurant across the street from Clarion being turned into a Hilton Garden Inn/Home2 Suites.

"I always thought of it as a hidden gem here," Morningstar said. "And it just happened to be vacant (when I was ready to do something)."

Now, four weeks away from opening, Morningstar is ready to roll out a menu featuring items such as a smoked gouda mac 'n' cheese burger, homemade baked pimento cheese on crostini, savory cheesy shrimp and grits and blackened chicken salad. The restaurant will keep the “back porch” atmosphere with a porch and back lounge area in addition to its indoor dining.

"I have an awesome chef in Jeff Blackmon, an amazing menu, a stellar staff, the greatest support flock and the most adorable venue in Columbia," Morningstar said.

1616 Gervais will serve lunch 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday with the bar and lounge open “until” (closed Sunday). For more information: www.1616gervais.com
