Re: The Anti-Peristyle To the Max With the commitment of Mater Dei quarterback Max Wittek, Lane Kiffin and the Trojan coaching staff have a cornerstone recruit for the class of 2011. On Thursday USCFootball.com headed down to Mater Dei to check out Wittek as he prepared for his senior season. We will put up a video interview and highlights from his practice session, but we wanted to share a few thoughts from what we saw here in the War Room first. Wittek is a very well spoken young man, following in the footsteps of former Monarch quarterbacks like Matt Barkley and Matt Leinart. When we talked to Wittek about helping to recruit athletes to USC, the first name that he mentioned was future five-star De'Anthony Thomas. Thomas, Wittek and Mater Dei receiver Victor Blackwell are all close, and Wittek would like nothing more than to have Thomas, and Blackwell, join him at USC. Wittek looked extremely comfortable running quarterback drills and 7-on-7 drills at Mater Dei. He is clearly the leader of the team, growing and maturing quite a bit over the past year. While Wittek seemingly toured the country on numerous unofficial visits, he told us that he is done visiting other schools, unofficially or officially. Twin Peake Roebuck (S.C.) receiver Charone Peake is among the players USC will evaluate in person this month. Offered a scholarship in writing just a few weeks ago by the Trojans coaching staff, Peake was eager to talk about the OTHER USC, but was cautious about saying too much. “All I’m going to say at this time is that I have high interest in SC,” said Peake. “I would put them in my top five, no doubt.” Being across the country in an area hostile to out-of-area recruiters, Peake didn't list the factors which would draw him to USC. He did, however, admit that his scholarship offer came with apprehension. “At first, I didn’t really want to consider them,” said Peake of the Trojans. “I got the offer, and it was a surprise. But there’s pressure out there... temptations. Plus, the cost of living isn’t cheap. I need more information, but I’m interested.” Benign quotes from a recruit who has to be considered a longshot in every sense of the word. However, what Peake didn’t say leaves room for intrigue. We’ll keep you posted. Trojans on the Road The first week of May was the first week USC hit the recruiting trail for May Evaluations. Recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron has been all over the Southland evaluating prospects already holding scholarship offers from USC, such as the Trojans commits, Max Wittek and Antwaun Woods. USC assistant coaches have also seen recruits up and down the East Coast, with stops in Florida, Virginia, Georgia and South Carolina lined up. Wille Mack Garza hit South Florida this week to see Ft. Lauderdale standouts Wayne Lyons and Bobby Hart. Unconfirmed reports also had Garza visiting Groveland (Fla.) cornerback Nick Waisome as well Daytona Beach (Fla.) standouts Marlin Lane and Cortez Davis this week. Also Thursday, USC was in Arizona to see players like Scottsdale (Calif.) linemen Andre Yruretagoyena and Cyrus Hobbi. While Yruretagoyena has a scholarship offer from USC, and is beginning to really take a liking to the Trojans, Hobbi remains without one. That, however, may soon change. Interestingly, when scouting Scottsdale last winter, Brennan Carroll came across Hobbi and made overtures of a verbal scholarship offer to his head coach. After seeing Hobbi Thursday, there’s a chance USC’s new coaching staff follows through with those intensions. A bird in the hand... but what’s in the bush? Although USC secured the commitment of Santa Ana (Calif.) quarterback Max Wittek last month, the Trojans are being diligent and still evaluating other quarterbacks in May. Don't panic. North Dakota Sleeper It isn’t often that USC recruits North Dakota State College of Science. However, offensive lineman Jake Fahrenkrug is a small town recruit gaining big time attention from colleges. Recently scoring a scholarship offer from UCLA, Fahrenkrug has also been in contact with USC. At 6-foot-4, 315-pounds, Fahrenkrug currently holds 10 scholarship offers from schools like Tennessee, Florida State, Arizona and Arkansas. As a December graduate, Fahrenkrug at least has a shot at being seriously looked at by USC next fall. Orgeron back in Mississippi While Ed Orgeron has spent the first week of evaluations in Southern California, he will eventually head out to the South. Mississippi is one of his more familiar recruiting grounds, and the Trojans already offered scholarships to Batesville (Miss.) receiver Nickalos Brassell and Woodville (Miss.) defensive tackle James Maiden. It sounds like a third prospect from the Magnolia State is in line for a scholarship offer. Madison (Miss.) wide out Tobias Singleton has been in contact with the Trojans and has expressed interest in visiting Los Angeles this summer. Singleton has a scholarship offer from UCLA, and would like to kill two birds with one stone by visiting both schools this summer. Did you know that milk was designated as the state beverage by the Mississippi State Legislature during the 1984 Regular Session of State Senate? This is purely a trivial comment, but milk is also the designated beverage for recruitniks. ;) Worse for Wear News broke early Thursday that freshman forward/centers David and Travis Wear were transferring from North Carolina's basketball program to be closer to home. The Wear brothers were All-Americans at Mater Dei and were heavily recruited out of high school including briefly by USC under Tim Floyd. Although some might see USC as a possible landing spot based on their criteria, scholarship math will prevent the twins from even considering the Trojans. "Even if (USC) wanted them, they couldn't," one source said. UCLA is considered the favorite to land them. Ironically, USC took two transfers this spring, Aaron Fuller and DeWayne Dedmon. Fuller, by the way, was spotted wearing a USC sweatshirt while still at Iowa.

Re: The USC thread: The Anti-Peristyle Nah, I don't post much generally. I'm more of a lurker on those forums, as they get quite cliquey at times. I will say that Gerard and Ryan and their staff does provide a great deal more information than some other sites. The majority of posters there are incredible homers (maybe not as much as the WeAreSC guys) but still homers nonetheless. And yea, All Access is the premium ripsitstuff, not worth the money during the offseason, but great for rewatching games during the season. I only pay for it during season anyways. And damn it re: Cushing. Gonna be another black eye on our program, even though there's no evidence of Cush and roids during his time at SC.

Re: The USC thread: The Anti-Peristyle Though I have been one of Tupou's louder critics, he was starting for a reason. It always hurts to lose depth in the middle of the line. Those guys need to rotate more so than any other position. not a minor loss at all.

After dealing with Fangupo's size and strength, it would be tough to deal with Tupou's quickness. Tupou just does not have a big enough ass to play in the middle for the majority of the game.

It had quotes of Orgeron saying that before he came to SC, he looked at Tupou's film and wasn't that impressed. But once he started actually working him out in person, his perspective totally changed. I'll try and find the article. One point this makes is how invaluable the added depth that's been developed in the spring with the way DaJohn Harris, Derek Simmons and now Loni Fangupo are playing.
