I think it's bullshit myself but honestly if I didn't have a job and sat around all day I'd rather be inside enjoying my big screen than hanging out on the porch.

 

what happens in those scenarios now?? Do you think the governemnt issues more money to families with quickly growing children?? do you think there is some sort of rebate policy where the governemnt re-issues the money intended to be used on clothes if the shirt is ripped?

There is currently a breakdown of how much money is given to welfare recipients, and that is broken down based on the need for specific items (clothes, food, etc.).

as dumb an idea as this is (and I agree, it's dumb), it's far less dumb than relying on people to use the money we give them properly and wisely.

 

This is a true story. I really don't care enough to lie about it. There are many parents who are really good, who are actually trying. But there are many who are not. if you don't think that's true, I don't know what to tell you.

I feel like we are going in circles here, but the kids who don't eat at their house because they don't have any food to eat because their parents do not buy them food don't have parents who are going to go buy them new clothes when they get a snag in their sweater.

If you are asking me to explain their behavior, I can't. I keep going back to this, but there are people who literally don't buy food for their fucking kids. You want me to explain to you how someone could buy a 90" tv on welfare, well explain to me the mindset of someone who wouldn't feed their kids.

I personally do not understand that, on any level, and cannot even comprehend the level of parenting ("parenting") it takes to behave that way. Do you think that doesn't happen, that there are not parents who are so self absorbed that they don't feed their kids? Or who leave their 6 year old kids home alone while they go out for the night? Kindergartners who can describe in great detail her mom and boyfriend having sex? Who have seen people get shot, stabbed, and beaten? Who take their kids medication and either take it themselves, or sell it? Who have sent their kids to school with lice so bad that it looks like their hair is moving? Then there are the really shitty situations where protective services need to be called.

seriously, wake the fuck up, there are SHITTY parents out there that treat their kids like garbage. Not ALL parents, not ALL welfare recipients. But some of them do, and one of them even has a 90" fucking tv.

Can I ask you - seriously, you are just going to give people $X and "hope" they spend it on what it's intended to be spent on? How do you regulate that? How do you make sure the kids are getting clothes and shoes and food?

maybe they lied about how big it was (wouldn't be the first time, eh?). Maybe it wasn't even their tv, maybe their uncle gave it to them, maybe they bought it off the back of a truck for $200, maybe.... We have a 50" tv (I'm not on welfare), so I think my wife would have at least some frame of reference, even if she has no idea how to measure a tv.

The point is not that poor people are evil. It's that we give poor people money with which to buy necessities. Of course there are shitty rich parents, but society doesn't give them money, or things, to live. The shitty poor parents are susceptible to making poor decision with the money we give them. My point is - how can we stop that from happening, while helping the innocent victims in this - the kids?

We spent 6 years worth of all the EBT money in the country combined (~130 billion) in the last 13 months developing a jet fighter that will never be used by the US military because its already obsolete. by the way, I suggested that instead of money to buy food, we simply give people food. Aren't school breakfast and school lunches exactly that - giving people food instead of money to buy food?

Are you guys against that, do you think instead of the breakfast and lunch programs the government should be giving the parent additional money with which to buy their kids breakfast and lunch? Can't you tear that apart as well - how could the government possibly do that, you want them making food for the entire country, how much food, what kind of food, what about allergies if I'm allergic to that food I just starve that day, do you feed a kindergartner the same kind and amount of food as a 6th grader, etc.?

yet, that system is in place and seems to at least be working to the extend that it's providing 2 meals a day to needy kids.

I'm playing devil's advocate in asking those questions, but if you (the general you) agree that the school lunch/breakfast system is working, I think it could be applied more broadly. And that was my initial suggestion that was deemed impossible or implausible.

 

i guess my biggest issue is attributing shitty parents to only Poor People. There are rich parents who don't feed their kids, who go out every night and leave their kids home alone, and a kindergartner who can tell you what sex looks like between her rich dad and his girlfriend. Attributing things like this to only poor people really isn't helping the issue of trying to feed and clothe poor families.

 

I have two things to say.

1. It would be a logistical nightmare to give people food/clothing/etc. instead of money.

2. I've worked for three cable/satellite companies and every installer will tell you that many poor people have outrageous A/V setups. I have a personal example as well. My niece has two kids and got something like 7 grand for a tax refund one year. Instead of paying her rent for a year or, god forbid, putting it in the bank, she and her boyfriend bought a new tv, xbox 360, video games, booze, etc. They blew through it in a month.

 

I dont think anyone is denying that they have stuff like that. Its the specifics of like a 90" tv people are questioning. They might spend all their money stupidly, but they rarely have enough of it at one time to buy something that costs 10k

 

He said in his specific example she got $7K. Google is telling me I can get a 90" tv for $5500. With $7K I can get a 90", xbox, speakers and still have some fun money left over. It's absurd to think someone would actually do that, but it's not as impossible as people are trying to make it sound.

I appreciate your fair, even keel assessment. I love that everyone says I'm lying about this TV, then someone says they can verify that many poor people have ridiculous AV systems, and that's just - meh. I have no reason to lie about any of this. Why do you think I'm a liar??

If my wife is really like what?? If she really told me that she saw the biggest TV she's ever seen in a clients house, she's a piece of shit? If she can tell horrific stories of abuse and neglect? My wife isn't a teacher, she's a counselor, so she deals with....wait for it...abused and neglected children. Are you really shocked that she can tell all kinds of stories of abused and neglected kids? She tells me about her day, which often involves terrible stories of shitty parents. She also tells me some really great stories about good parents.

She also was a case manager for a while, she can tell all kinds of "fun" stories about mentally ill adults too.

i like those shows and find them very funny but i agree with the "OMG LOOK AT HIM OWN THIS GUY" stuff being annoying

 

You are naive as it absolutely gets if you think there's no way somebody in the hood has a 90" tv. Like I said above I did Census work a few years ago. While I didn't see any 90" tvs I saw a shit load of 60" and around that. I saw homes with barely any furniture and holes everywhere yet bottles of hennessey, Crown, Patron, etc sitting on the counter. They aren't very bright with how they spend their money. They don't have jobs so again why not get the best tv you can possibly get? Many of them have someone in the house who sells drugs and has plenty of cash to waste on shit like tvs. Many of them sell their food stamps. Quit being naive. People on Welfare aren't exactly spending their money on the essentials most of then time. Many of them would rather get high or drunk than eat.
