telling myself what? Have you actually spent time in the hood? You might want to try it before sounding like a naive idiot. I have plenty of people working for me that are on welfare, food stamps, etc. They get a giant tax return and instead of spending it where it should go come in with new jewelry and new Michael Kors purses. I can find my Census badge somewhere around here. I didn't say I saw any 90" tvs. I did see plenty of large nice tvs though and plenty of other ridiculously expensive shit in homes that were falling apart. Might want to watch a few of those shows that go around real gang members and see how they live. they live in shacks but because they sell drugs and steal shit they have tons of nice things.

You're from NC though or at least a NC fan so not surprised you're a liberal

Blanket statements? A blanket statement would be to say everyone on Welfare has a $1000+ tv. I said I've seen them. That is a fact not a blanket statement or anything more. There's nothing to read into.

so far someone who installs cable, someone who did census work, and someone who does social work, all of whom have spent time in homes in low income communities have verified that some (not all, not every single one, not 100%, SOME) people have exorbitant lifestyles relative to their income.

What's the fucking argument here? Do any of you actually think that can't possibly be true? Pull your head out of your ass. What are you basing your opinions on?? All of the time you've spent in the projects and the lack of big screen tvs? or is it just your general assumptions?

We've already admitted that some are fiscally irresponsible. No one has said that they arent. The argument is basically calling bullshit on the obvious lie of the 90 inch tv and that's it's unnecessary to take away the ability (for those on public assistance) to purchase items they want.

Also if people are using money from tax returns (they obviously work) for outrageous purchases what does that have to do with people using welfare for them?

Also we stigmatize the poor to such a degree that I think putting more limits on the aid they receive (in turn costing more money due to implementation and upkeep) should be super high up on important things politically, especially when fraud rates are consistent with general population from last literature reviews I've done and that welfare (tanf) has already been neutered.

But please, keep turning the screws on the very poor, tends to end well historically.

Not really. I was responding to Kyle who said they shouldn't be able to sell food stamps. A way to do that would be to make them only redeemable by those who they were issued to which would require an id to verify that.

I personally don't think it's all that unreasonable to require someone to get a photo ID, but maybe that fits in this thread and maybe it doesn't. If it's actually prejudicial, the government should make it easier, not simply not require them.

Well in the vein of combating the voter fraud bogeyman it's ridiculous, there aren't many cases. But overall an ID is probably useful. It doesn't have to be current but just have your face and your name/address

Yeah, I just think if you're participating in government programs, it's not hard to have a government ID. I edited my post above to say this right before you quoted it, but if there are "administrative burdens" to getting a government ID, then we should remove those burdens rather than not require the ID.

I honestly don't know what the process is like for people who don't have driver's licenses, and I imagine it's probably a hassle if you don't have a birth certificate or social security card, but having an ID card to get government benefits doesn't seem to be a civil rights violation

Shu there is no custom title

What about people who buy them for 25 cents or 50 cents on the dollar?

    Smart business or foul?

There is a seafood place in town the sells raw seafood to people with EBT and then charge them like 25 cents to cook it. Pretty smart iyam.

I wish there was a way to stop both corporate welfare and abuse of social welfare.

The govt has a set dollar amount that they have to spend in a fiscal year. You bet your ass in September they are tearing up new shit on purpose and ordering new stuff so they get as much or more money the next year. I have seen it first hand.

Also, the greatest ROI there is is donating to politicians (at least those who have clout and can get shit done). That, along with campaign finance reform, should change.

There needs to be some serious reform, and there could be if they wanted to.

I'm not sure the food stipend would be the worst thing in the world. Not arguing that zero discretionary income should be given in the form of food, but maybe some supplementary food should be provided..? It's common knowledge that larger grocery chains (with a larger selection of healthy food choices) are scarce in lower income areas, bulk stores like Costco generally don't pitch a tent in poorer areas either. If your choices are convenience stores and tiny food markets your food and nutrition options are limited relative to the money you're spending.. This is a problem that I'm not sure government has the ability to address other than through existing food stamp programs.

Somewhat related but not trying to make a point here; I wasn't aware government giving out food used to exist not all that long ago. My Mom's family was dirt poor and there used to be given 'commodities' as it was explained to me. Im guessing this was a state program, but they were given bags of rice, cream, not sure what else, but yeah..

In addition to the school breakfast and lunch programs, there is also WIC (The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.)

WIC provides, among other things, food for mothers and their kids. Not food stamps or money for food, but actual food. I remember dating a girl whose roommate had a kid, and seeing milk and eggs and bread being delivered to her.

So again, as I'm thinking about it, there are multiple instances of the government providing food in lieu of money to those in need. It seems like we could expand those programs. I agree that 100% coverage in that manner is not a great idea, but a huge majority of a persons nutritional needs could be met that way.

I doubt we could ever see it but I think rather than limiting welfare and other social programs by type of expenditure a guaranteed minimum income would do a lot more to improve living conditions in impoverished areas AKA the hood.

That's highly illegal. And, if you know they're defrauding the government and can blow the whistle for a false claims act case against them, you'd end up with about 10% of the government's judgment against them. So, put up or shut up.

I'm okay with restricting what people on welfare can buy with that specific money. I fmost peoplle on welfare aren't blowing their money on 60" TV's, 24" rims, lift kits for their trucks and shotguns then it won't be much of an issue anyway and it'll shut up the uninformed.
