Off the top of my head, that would be Champagne and Alsace. I'd go to a big Champagne house or two and do a cave tour. While there, Reims has a beautiful cathedral (Notre Dame de Reims) that is worth visiting. I've never been to Alsace but it is on my list of places I should visit before I die because I've seen pictures and it looks absolutely beautiful.

That has to be beer or cider country. I think it is too cold for grapes.

Stoked...our restaurant just booked Montreal's Domaine de la Romanée-Conti event. They come in town once every year/every 2 years for the province's biggest wine buyers, and will be bringing in 40 bottles for the evening.

I know Silver Oak has a bit of a rep, but this past weekend my dad gave me a bottle of 2002 Silver Oak Napa Valley cab sav as a birthday present. My dad lived in California while I was in college, and I visited him one summer in 2004 and we took a day trip out to Napa Valley, which is when he bought this bottle. He's had it cellared ever since with the intent of giving it to me on a special occasion. Thought it was pretty cool and I look forward to drinking it in the near future.

Last Saturday we got hit with a rare sunny 70+ degree day in March (felt like 90 to my MN bones) so I went and picked up 6 bottles of Provence Rose. We drank 2 bottles with friends and I could likely be waiting another month or two to open the next.

I want to start following this thread so I'm gonna go ahead and post some of my favorite cabs and pinots. I'd be interested to know if any of you guys either think my opinion is shit or if you have had/like some of these and have some to compare.
Cab Sav: Conn Creek, Duckhorn (and their cheaper Decoy), Schug (their pinot noir is kickass too), Stag's Leap (pretty pricey but really nice when I feel like spending on a cab).
Pinot Noir: Firesteed (11-13/bottle really enjoyable, they also have a Williamette Valley pinot that is good but more expensive), Schug
I'm sure I'll remember others and post later. Those are my go-to wines though.

    Welcome.

My opinion on your wines. Conn Creek - Great call. Duckhorn - Good wine, not great value. Schug - I've never had it. Stag's Leap - I personally like it more than Duckhorn, slightly better value but still not great value.

Firesteed - Fine value OR Pinot. Not my favorite but really good for the price and along with stuff like Erath it is a good choice to have around the house.

    Overall, I like your tastes.

Your take on my wines are pretty much my takes on them, actually. Firesteed I basically buy in bulk and have the bottom shelf of the wine fridge full pretty much all the time. Conn is my favorite of the ones I can afford to keep a few of in the house at the same time. I much more frequently buy the Decoy from Duckhorn than the actual stuff (because i cant tell much of a difference honestly...at least not 25 bucks a bottle difference).

Also...Schug's bread and butter is their Pinot Noir, you should check it out next time you're at total wine or whatever you have wherever you live.

Opened a 2012 Bergstrom Le Pre De Col Pinot last night for the wife's birthday. I haven't opened a 12 in a while and forgot how big and fruity the wines are in that vintage. Paired well with th venison.

I may have asked this before but didn't get any really good leads, so I'll lobby it up again.

Does anyone order wine online? I don't mean the sample clubs, but if there is one of those worth a shit I'd be curious. Googling wine online is a bad idea. The alcohol taxes are really high here so it'd be nice to order a case online. Otherwise, I shop by the case when I'm in Nashville or Louisville.

I use JJ Buckley (primarily for European wines) and Full Pull Wines (Washington specialist). Other than that, I buy a lot direct from wineries.

Probably 80% of my purchases get shipped because our liquor stores have high prices and/or poor selection.

I own one, friend owns one, and we had split one. Drank the split one over dinner a few weeks ago. It's still pretty young, but opened up amazingly. The 2012 was 100 points, but I never had a chance to taste that one.

So I've been meaning to get into the whole wine game for awhile, both because I have enjoyed my dabbles with quality wine and to add more variety to my drinking (I can't just drink craft beer and Tito's, right?). I was made responsible for acquiring the wine for our family Easter get together on Sunday, so I decided now was the time to start my foray. Used this thread to point me to some stuff to start out with (so thank you all), and since I prefer reds I decided to start there. Got the five in the picture to start with (these are for me, got some other stuff for the fam). Any advice on which I should go with first, or if I should hold off and let some develop more would be appreciated, as would other recommendations.

'12 and '13 H3 has been a major workhorse for me the last two years. Haven't had the '14 yet, but if it's anything like the previous two vintages, it's a great value.

It should be good. 2012-2014 have all been warm vintages in Washington. I think 2014 was the warmest.

I understand 100% what you mean by those being warm vintages but could you maybe explain it for the rest of the folks here that might not understand that terminology?

What I meant more than anything is if someone likes 2012 & 2013 they will probably also like 2014 because the weather was similar. In warm vintages the grapes produce more sugar and get riper which tends to accentuate the fruity characteristics of the wines, makes them higher alcohol (more sugar = more for yeast to eat = more alcohol produced) and the body tends to be more full (like drinking whole milk as opposed to skim). In a cooler vintage you tend to get lower alcohol, leaner wines with higher acidity (as sugar increases acid decreases so less sugar = more acidity) and the flavors tend to be more earthy as opposed to ripe fruit flavors. Everybody's tastes are different. I tend to like acidity and earthy so I like cooler vintages but I can also enjoy the warmer, more fruit forward vintages.

I think you can find really, really good value for 2011 Cabernet out of Alexander Valley or off the valley floor Napa. Much cooler vintage but the better producers were still able to do really well. All depends on "value" definition for you. Under $50, $30, $20?

2010 and 2011 were both cool vintages throughout the US. In most regions, 2010 produced better wines than 2011. In a lot of areas, 2011 was too cold that it was hard to get ripeness. For Cabernet based wines that typically would give you flavors like green pepper and maybe some bitterness. In Pinot Noir that would typically produce really thin wines that seem overly acidic with very light flavors. 2010 was more of a goldilocks where you got ripe flavors at lower alcohol levels and the grapes retained their acidity. If you find 2010 from any US region you're probably good to go. If you see 2011, I'd focus on regions that tend to be warmer (Napa, parts of Sonoma like Alexander Valley, Red Mountain in WA, etc) because they tended to get ripe enough although frankly even in Napa it was hit or miss.

The style from cool vintages in the US is more like European wines in most vintages.

As another generalization, warm/cool vintage tends to make a bigger difference on the value wines. In a cool vintage, good producers that are selling $25+ wines will just take what got ripe enough and put it in their better wines and they'll just have fewer cases. The not ripe enough grapes find their way in to the cheaper wines which tends to bring those down in quality. In a warm vintage, you can more easily find really good $10 wines. :twocents:
