The irony. Same ball placement for lampard vs Germany called no goal and that own goal with goal line technology for the women.
Got to feel bad for that poor girl. Not like she made a bad decision trying to just clear it. Just kicked it a little less hard than she should've.
Can't blame her for trying to make the play that needed to be done. Just can't imagine how she feels and how much work she will have to do to get over that one moment. Plus she is 31 who knows if she is playing at 35 4 years down the road.
oh my god. i just saw what happened. that has to be the absolute worst possible way to lose a semi-final game.
It was absolutely the right play. It was difficult to be sure, and she just didn't get it cleanly. It's hard to blast it back toward your own goal.
She'll never get over it. Really wasn't that bad of a play either, Jap forward was open and she had to go for the ball and just insanely unlucky.
That was absolutely heart wrenching and can't even imagine how she feels. The in-studio team was pretty much speechless for the first minute until they all tried to say a few nice things about Laura Bassett and how well she played in the tournament prior to that. The lone exception being Ariane Hingst who said "she'll always be remembered for scoring the OG that cost them the tournament" and then proceeded to bite the heads off a litter of puppies.
I also was slightly in favor of playing Japan until I read an article on how Fara Williams was homeless from 17 until her mid-20s and was definitely pulling for England after that :(
Just saw that own goal. She will never forgive herself for that. That's about as bad as it gets in ways to lose.
Just awful. And in this case she's lucky she's a woman. And not because the WWC is smaller...but because Everyone will support her. If a man did that...it'd be beyond relentless over there. Death threats and everything would be guaranteed for decades.
"it was a defender's worst nightmare" - Julie Johnston yesterday "wellllllllllllll on second thought" -Julie Johnston today
Making the necessary play & being unlucky different than completely stupid. Beckham survived his immensely stupid red card in 1998... albiet with a lot of boos & rough away crowds in the 1999 EPL season
True but own goals in THAT situation would not be met with that rational thought. Just no way. Maybe it wouldnt be as bad as Beckham...but itd be bad.
Beckham's kicked Simeone, cost England the game & prevented the best England team I can remember from advancing... at least Bassett made a play on the ball
So did Escobar. He dead. (Yes I know different part of the world. Just sayin) Anyway part of my point is that rational thinking need not apply if that were to happen. It wouldnt a rational reaction.
Fyi , the man who murdered Andres Escobar wouldn't give up his bosses so he was sentenced to 45 years in jail but was released after 11 for good behavior.
Escobar wasn't necessarily targeted for a hit from what I understand. He just got into it with the wrong person at a club
You don't have a soul if you don't feel for that girl. I mean, we basically just watched her get emotionally scarred for life. I can't imagine what it's like to spend your entire existence preparing and training to be the best you can, then reach the absolute pinnacle of your chosen craft, and then have something like that etch itself into your legacy. Ugh. Makes me sick to think about.
