Truman Cox and Waters wrestling on mats right next to each other. Waters beats Blanc in consolation bracket Cox beats Gavin 3-1 and is on his way...to the FINALS! He gets winner of Dake-Magicman
Dake holds on 4-3 over Taylor to remain unbeaten against his rival. Dake-Cox in the finals....Dake wrestled at 141-149-157-165 in college and Cox wrestles at 197 and Heavyweight.
Varner looking EXTREMELY good against Gadson with a 4-0 win. Very solid. He gets winner of Kilgore-Bergman. Garrett up 5-2 over a BATTERED Nico with 33 seconds left. His face is covered in blood. Nico gets a TD but it's not enough. 5-4 Garrett.
JD Bergman goes up 3-0 on Kilgore, Kilgore scores two straight takedowns in the 2nd. 4-3 Kilgore with 45 seconds left, might see him retire if he loses here. Another late takedown by Kilgore to cement it. He gets the unenviable task of wrestling Varner in the challenger finals. Thought for sure JD was going for his shoes as he was wiping away tears, but he walks off.
To give you an idea of just how good some of these guys are, Tyler Graff just teched Nahshon Garrett...in 21 seconds.
Taylor techs Herbert 10-0 in under a minute Burak pins Gadson in under a minute Bergman up 9-0 on Schiller in the 1st
Dennis takes match 1 against Ramos (wins 2-1, all 3 points shot clock points) Cox takes match 1 against Dake 8-1! Varner takes match 1 against Snyder 4-4! Here comes Burroughs! He wins 9-3! Easy!
after watching college wrestling, this shit is weird. They break them up after barely any time within each other's grasps. Also, when does the shot clock get used? I cant figure that out. I know there's a reason, but it seems to be enacted arbitrarily to my novice eye
It's like stalling in folkstyle. Only it's called passivity. The less aggressive wrestler is put on a 30-second shot clock and if there is no scoring in those 30 seconds, then his opponent gets a point.
Cox has done it! He wins the olympic trials at 86 kg! Still needs to qualify the weight, but looks good! I'd feel bad for him if Cox didn't do the same thing to Phil Wellington this year
Qualify the weight class by finishing in the top 3 at one of the last chance qualifiers. He'll be wrestling again in Mongolia on April 22, and if he fails to qualify there, Turkey on May 6.
Is the reason the USA doesn't get an auto bid at that weight class is because we usually suck at that class?
Snyder is going to Rio. Crazy to think that Snyder-Cox in the semis of the 2015 NCAA tournament was a matchup of 2016 US Olympic Trials Champions.
Did Myles compete in this? Seems like he'd be really good in freestyle with how athletic he is, probably doesn't have much experience though.
I think the only qualification events so far for the US have been Worlds and Pan Ams. I believe top 6 at Worlds qualify and top 2 at Pan Ams qualify. Snyder and Burroughs won gold at Worlds, qualifying 97 kg and 74 kg. Tervel took gold and Ramos took silver at the Pan Am qualifier last month, qualifying 125kg and 57kg. 65 kg and 86 kg failed to qualify, as Metcalf and Herbert both took Bronze.
No, because he'd get destroyed. Not only does he not have the skill level of these guys, but he just wrestled at 174 a few weeks ago, and would have had to compete at 189 this weekend. Dake can get away with competing at 185 because he's Dake, but MyMar would have gone 0-2 pretty much regardless of his opponent.
Nick Zaccardi @nzaccardi J'Den Cox would be the youngest American to wrestle freestyle at the Olympics since 1976
Unless he's a really young junior, Snyder would be younger. Not like it diminishes the accomplishment 1 bit.
FrankReynolds , feel like you'll enjoy this with your hatred of Iowa. I don't know much about this but Ramos comes across as a complete pussy. http://www.flowrestling.org/video/966258-ramos-feels-betrayed-by-iowa
Don't know the history of Ramos being a pussy and he definitely did it the wrong way but he has a legit grip if brands bailed on him
It pains me that two of our best international wrestlers are in the same damned weight class (Taylor and Dake).
Ramos is such a bitch. I'm guessing Brands wasn't 100% sticking to the plan he'd takes to Ramos about, but fuck. Sack up, dude. I also don't buy that he had an issue with Dennis other than he was threatened. Having another guy that's just as good (better, technically) in the room can only make you better unless you choose to make it toxic. This is really pissing me off.
I'm guessing that was the case, but wtf would you do in that scenario? Splitting coaches to get the best combos on each side makes some sense.
What success have they had internationally? And they are 74 kg guys, with these olympic weights they moved up because of Burroughs. In terms of best international wrestlers, there's a clear #1, #2, and #3 in Burroughs, Snyder, and Tervel imo. No one else has had the same success internationally. Big gap between Tervel and #4.
Both of those guys are all-time greats from a college perspective, and I just wish that they weren't A) Naturally in the same weight class as Burroughs and B) Not in eachother's weight class. That said, I don't really follow international wrestling as closely as I should, and I was repeating something I'd heard about Taylor a couple weeks ago while talking about this exact subject. They are also both relatively young, and still have time to grow into All-World caliber wrestlers. In other news we have quite a few ranked Americans per UWW March Freestyle rankings 57 KG -- #18 Sam Hazewinkel 61 KG -- #20 Coleman Scott 65 KG -- #12 Logan Steiber, #17 Brent Metcalf (Fun fact: My college roommate was his recruitment host at VT, so we took him around Blacksburg, good times) 70 KG --#3 James Green, #11 Aaron Pico, #19 Frank Molinaro 74 KG -- #1 Jordan Burroughs (Taylor's been ranked in this class before, don't think Dake has) 97 KG -- #2 Kyle Snyder, #15 Jacob Varner, #19 James Bergman 125 KG -- #19 Tervel Dlagnev, #20 Dominique Bradley Also, did Harry Lester change his name to Justin or is that his little brother? Harry was pretty fun to watch in HS, one of the more dominating I ever saw at the HS level.
If brands said he was going to corner him he should have cornered him regardless of what was going on IMO
Harry Lester=Justin Lester, think Harry is a nickname. The above rankings are already outdated, and kind of irrelevant in an olympic year because 61 kg and 70 kg aren't olympic weights. James Green won a World bronze at 70kg, but for one reason or another, got completely worked domestically at 65kg.
Quick little preview: 125 kg: Akgul from Turkey is the #1 guy in the country, but he just completely gassed in a match and lost for the first time in years to a Georgian. Guessing that Georgian is the only threat to beat him, but even that seems unlikely, as he was being dominated until the final minute. 97 kg: The top four are undoubtedly Snyder and Russia's top threesome of Gadisov (2014 World Gold, 2015 World Silver), Boltukaev (2013 World Bronze, 2016 Yargyin Champ, 2016 Euro Champ), and Gatsolov (2004 Olympic Gold, 5X world champ, 2016 Medved Champ). Snyder lost to Boltukaev and Gatsolov this year, but beat Gadisov for the World Gold last year. I believe Gadisov is the guy for Russia at 97kg, which might be best case scenario for Snyder, as Boltukaev is suddenly looking amazing. Almost like he took magic medicine that made him faster and stronger. There's an Azerbaijanian (Gazyumov) who is also really good and will factor in, and an Iranian 2x world champ Yazdani who is good but I believe isn't quite at the Russians' or Snyder's level right now. 86 kg: Sadulaev wins gold here easily. No one is close. 74 kg: Burroughs is the heavy favorite, don't think anyone can touch him, but he at least has a competitor in Geduev from Russia. They wrestled at world's last year and it was Burroughs' only tight match. 65 kg: Italian Frank Chamizo (2015 World gold, 2016 Euro Gold) is the favorite. A handful of contenders including an Iranian and Azerbaijanian. 57 kg: The Georgian guy whose name I can't spell or pronounce is the favorite followed by guys like Yowles Bonne from Cuba, Lebdev from Russia, Rahimi from Iran.
Starting to think that Molinaro is not going to qualify for the Olympics. Euro Qualifier was today so we now have a good idea of who will be wrestling in Mongolia and Turkey. Gadzhiev (Poland, formerly Russia) and Kvyatkovskyi (Ukraine) qualified by finishing top 2. Iakobishvili (Georgia), Safaryan (Armenia), Kaya (Turkey), and Nurykau (Belarus) still haven't qualified and are all really tough opponents Molinaro will have to wrestle in Mongolia next week. Will know more about 86kg in a few hours, that is going on now I believe. Stream for today (as well as next week in Mongolia and 3 weeks in Turkey) can be found on the UWW website. https://unitedworldwrestling.org/event/european-og-qualifying-tournament

PA Boys Spencer Lee #1 recruit in 2017 and Gavin Teasdale Top 3 recruit in 2018 have both committed......... . . .. . .. . . . .. . . .. . . . . . .. . . . . . .. . . . .. . . TO IOWA! Stevis_In_C-Bus
Shocked on Teasdale not on Lee. Oh well you can't be scared of competition that you'll end up losing to in th B1G anyway.
Brackets are out for Men's FS at the qualification tournament in Mongolia. I believe action starts at 7 PM CST tonight, although my calculations could be off due to a 14 hour time difference. 65 KG: In a bracketing fail, the two favorites coming in, David Safaryan (Armenia) and Zurabi Iakobishvili (Georgia) are wrestling each other in the round of 16. What's even better, they are on the opposite of the bracket of Molinaro, so he doesn't have to worry about those two top guys. More good news is that he should handle his first round (R32) opponent from Vietnam. Bad news is that he gets Yakup Gor of Turkey in the R16. Yakup won World Bronze last year and placed 5th at a tough European Championship field this year. However, silver lining, this means that Mustafa Kaya (Turkey) is not wrestling this weekend. He won world silver at this weight last year. Also, other top threats, the Bulgarian and Belarusian are both on the Safaryan/Iakobishvili side of the bracket, so Molinaro is definitely on the "easy" side of the bracket. Batirov, the Russian-turned-Bahraini, is also on Molinaro's side of the bracket and is a threat to make Rio. He has a path to Rio for sure but the Turk in R16 will be a tough (if not insurmountable) out. 86KG: Good news/Bad news here. Good news is that the field is relatively weak compared to 65kg. Bad news is that Cox's half of the bracket is significantly tougher than the top half. Cox gets an Armenian that finished 5th at Euro's in the R32. I don't know anything about him other than this fact. Seems like a tough R32 draw. The big news is that Ibragim Aldatov, former 2X world camp/5X world medalist is not wrestling in Ukraine. He seemed like a heavy favorite to make it to Rio. Radoslaw Marcinkiewicz of Poland is also not wrestling which is a boost. The Latvian Zvirbulis is tough. Uzbekistan if he makes it there could be a factor as a potential semifinal opponent. Overall, tough draws for both. I don't think Frank makes it this weekend because 65 KG is so saturated with talent. He may not be a top 10 guy in this field. J'den I think has a significantly better chance just because there aren't bosses scattered all over the bracket like at 65kg. lol.
