Wasn't a thread, wanted to give some #HOTBOOKTAKES on this one. 47% through it as of last night: Spoiler - Phillip has been super annoying in this book. His whining about the quest, and especially the Gwen clone things, has been annoying af. He takes things so damn seriously and it has bothered me more than the other books this time around. - Kind of along the same lines, this keeps happening with relationships. Roy and the "ladies". The people in relationships. Etc. Get over yourself and move on and enjoy your time with each other. - Jimmy has become much more likeable and I am very interested to see if this is a new him or if he's playing them. - The fact that Martin and co are like right behind them but keep doing the same things is making me laugh. - The design of everything of this quest + how shitty it is makes me laugh really hard. I'm enjoying it, but I'd say it's a tad bit of a step down from the other ones right now. Too much seriousness/getting offended by other characters. Looking forward to seeing where it goes next though.
I put my thoughts on this book in Book 2 thread. I'll just add them here. Finished the 3rd book. Again, it was about the same as the first two. I liked it a little bit less. I think some of it was just fatigue of reading three of these books in a row. It was probably a little more funny/slap sticky, but the plot and story was more meh to me. First two were 3.5s Unwelcomed Quest was a 3
I enjoyed it, but agree it was a slight step down. There were parts that made me laugh out loud though. Funniest moments of the whole series: Book 1 when Phillip is explaining his outhouse, and then the payoff later Book 2 or 3 (can't remember) when Tyler's new weapon is the hover macro that Martin used in his first duel against Phillip
Said this in the books you read thread: "Definitely my least favorite of the series. Was missing *something* that the first two had. Still enjoying the series and looking forward to the next one." Figured out what the something is: I'm having trouble past at this point is the lack of stakes. All book we were told one of the characters was dead. And I thought that was interesting because there would be some real stakes in the story. And in the end, he was brought back to life. I love the world and I think the books are funny and the characters are (for the most part) fun and interesting. But by the end of the book, everyone is still alive and you move on. The powers definitely are a cool thing about this story, but in the next one, I hope that Meyer doesn't do another "will or won't they die?!?!" story because we all know what the answer is. More about atmosphere and fun, less about plot. Also, Todd was a shitty villain. Especially compared to what Jimmy was. Jimmy has turned into one of my favorite characters by this point. He's a lot of fun.
Just finished this. Agree that Todd was a terrible villain compared to Jimmy. This installment was solid but lacked the teeth of the other two. A big time video game designer couldn't come up with a better "challenge" for the Wizards? It sounded like a shitty early 80s Atari game.
Agreed, I did feel like the shittyness was kind of funny though, although I agree it seems inconsistent.
Well I dont want to wait 6 months, so I guess I'll buckle down and do the audio. Ive been searching every so often to see when the next book is coming. Couldn't find shit and now there's a 2 month turnaround after the announcement. That was fast
Yeah I think I'll do the Audible free trial when it comes out and listen to it over a week. Hopefully it's better than the third one was.
kind of annoyed the written version doesnt come out until this fall. Gonna have to suck it up and listen to it.
Luke Daniels does an amazing job with the audiobooks. Just downloaded it, will listen when I finish Goblet of Fire reread
