Are Dolphins capable of matching offers for Olivier Vernon?

    ESPN Staff Writer

Last year the Miami Dolphins gave tight end Charles Clay the transition tag, and he received one offer from the AFC East rival Buffalo Bills.

    Miami didn't match it.

This offseason the Dolphins, who have less cap room than a year ago, will once again play the waiting game after giving defensive end and sack leaderOlivier Vernon the one-year transition tag for $12.701 million. Teams will be allowed to negotiate with Vernon next week, and there's a good chance he will get more interest on the market than Clay did last offseason.

Can Miami match potential offers for Vernon?

The Dolphins are making a curious decision with Vernon. They are being indecisive with Vernon the same way they were with Clay one year ago. Their one-foot-in, one-foot-out approach didn't work as the Bills gave Clay a substantial offer the Dolphins wouldn't touch. With so many teams owning tons of cap room, there's a good chance Vernon also will get a multi-year offer elsewhere that could put them in a bind.

According to NFLPA records, the Dolphins are currently about $3 million over the cap. But several moves are expected in the near future, such as restructuring Ndamukong Suh's $23.4 million salary for 2016 and cutting veteran receiver Greg Jennings' $4 million salary. That will put the team in position to make at least a few moves in free agency.

Quality, young pass-rushers do not hit the market often. Vernon, 25, is entering his prime and has 29 career sacks in four seasons. Instead of signing him to a long-term extension or giving him the franchise tag, the Dolphins opted to let the market determine Vernon's value. Miami also could have taken the opposite approach and just let Vernon hit the market.

Miami has a plethora of needs ranging from linebacker, guard, cornerback and safety. The team doesn't have enough cap room in free agency to fill all those needs this year and must nail the draft to help. Potentially losing Vernon also would create another hole at defensive end, especially with the status of former Pro Bowler Cameron Wake still up in the air.

Don't think we can afford him but I like the idea. #6 DE on PFF, Vernon was #1, Shelby was #10. I wish we would make more of an effort to keep Shelby. Played very well and will prob be pretty cheap

So, I guess the only reason you would do this is if you come to an impass with an agent over the price, and you let the market set the price, and hope it's closer to what you were wanting to resign him for than what the agent was asking?

Would be happy with all of those guys...with so many players around the same ability that we would be happy with, might be a good year to trade back and stock up on some good young talent with our cap situation the way it is...

Buckner is a 5 tech. I keep seeing him mocked to 4-3 teams and I just don't get it. Would hate to take another high OL, especially with all the other holes we have

i think you are forgetting just how bad our OL is, its one of the many holes that have to be addressed

    From PFF:

    31. Miami Dolphins - last year (32nd)

    Pass-blocking rank: 29th

    Run-blocking rank: 32nd

    Penalties rank: 25th

Stud: While Mike Pouncey is the best of this bunch, he didn’t even need to have anything close to his best year to be the stud here.

Dud: Is it time to call an end to the Dallas Thomas experiment? He graded worse in 2015 than he did in 2014, and struggled whenever faced with semi-decent opposition.

Summary: On the plus side, they moved up a spot. But that was due more to the Chargers being that bad, rather than Miami getting better. Given how much money and how many high draft picks the team has spent, it has to be considered a monumental failure that they produce as badly as they do.

Theoretically we have 2 tackles though. We needs 2 Gs, and you don't draft those at 8 overall. I do think you need to take the best player available, but if you draft Stanley are you playing him at G, or moving Albert or James in? I think you can still upgrade both G spots with a 2nd or 3rd rd pick in this draft, and a marginal FA and it would make a big difference.

Sounds like a fair price for Lamar. Looks like we are restructuring Misi as well, which I like.

Also looks like we could pursue Pacman Jones. We hired his DC so might be a good fit

At G, apparently we are looking at Geoff Schwartz of the Giants and Alex Boone. Both would be big upgrades, Schwartz was a top 10 RG and Boone a top 15 LG, with Schwartz being a good run blocker and Boone a good pass blocker.

We have restructured the contracts of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and linebacker Koa Misi.

#Dolphins officially announce restructure of Ndamukong Suh's deal. Frees up $18 million this year, pushes cap hits to future seasons

#Dolphins have released WR Greg Jennings. Frees up $4 million. No surprise there.

If the Dolphins rescind Vernon's transition tag, they will have more than $30 million in cap space. Plenty of ammo to attack free agency.

Yup. Have to assume we would be trading away a big cap number on our end or restructuring deal. I think there's a way you could have Philly pay some of the money this year too? We paid most of Ellerbe's cap hit last year after trading him to the saints.

no joke, I signed both Boykin and maxwell in the tmbsl madden league. Seems I am always right on with who the fins targets end up being in FA. (also nailed them getting Jennings, Paysinger, and Suh in last year's game)

I don't think I am a genius or anything, its just sheer coincidence that this happened

    • One bit of drama will center around the Dolphins. They used the transition tag on pass rusher Olivier Vernon, hoping it would keep away suitors. But in talks with several teams in the past few days, there seems to be significant interest in Vernon who, at 25, is one of the rarest NFL commodities: a productive pass rusher at a very young age. Vernon is coming from a team that already has too many high-priced defensive stars, so he could be signed by a team that would make his 2016 cap number too high for the Dolphins to match. If Vernon gets an offer sheet, Miami would have seven days to match.

Obviously depends on the picks we give up, but can you really that excited to bet a really overpaid corner and a (albeit very good) LB we'll have for a year that we can't afford to re-sign? With that Suh contract looming we might need as many draft picks as we can get our hands on b/c we need cheap talent

I would be ok with that I guess. Just hate losing Vernon, but we're broke. If we did that, I bet we'd get about a third round compensatory pick

heres the thing on maxwell. His signing bonus has already been paid. His cap hit is going to drop a bit because the Bonus money stays on the Eagles cap and he only has 3 million in guaranteed money left on his deal. I doubt they are giving up much for him. If he flops, he gets cut without a cap penalty

you never know. It could easily be a case of Maxwell wasn't a scheme fit in Philly and will fit better here. If it doesn't work, he's gone. Alonso is the guy Im really excited about
