he's got another 2-hour interview with joe rogan on youtube, released a few days ago in it he talks at length about Marvin Gaye's life, how he's a huge fan, etc.-- and imo you can definitely hear that in the new album
Love the new Album. couldnt care less about the lyrics in this one just in love with the melodic tones
I probably listened to Call to Arms 10x on the ride home. A boy can dream, but Listening to the Rain /The Motivator/ Call to Arms for 15+ mins to end a show might be the death of me.
If you buy the vinyl it includes the cd and digital copies. I think i like Sunday Valley Oh, Sarah better than ASGTE version of Oh, Sarah.
Very good ... The strings, horns, and keys are awesome. Really like how each track just flows into the next one
Not the album I was expecting but I enjoyed it and like sturgills other stuff, I can tell it will be a grower
I like it, although I don't like it when my favorite artists all of a sudden decide a brass section should be a prevalent part of their sound (see: Lucero).
Been able to only give it one good listen so far, really like Sea Stories. Not a huge fan of the songs that are super heavy on brass, it's better in moderation IMO.
Finally got through the rogan podcast. Not as insightful as the first but worth a listen on a long drive if you like nature, philosophy, and some (but not a ton) more backstory in Simpsons musical influences.
Few weeks late, but I didnt realize Kevin Black left http://www.savingcountrymusic.com/bass-player-kevin-black-leaves-sturgill-simpsons-band/
Well, I may spontaneously jizz myself sometime tomorrow, while in the middle of a meeting when I remember what I will be listening to all night. Probably all of a sudden shout "Albe-QUERQ-ue New Mexico" as I B my sturgill pant load
The funk in the second half of Welcome to Earth is just fantastic. Hope he can get some of the Dap Kings to tour with him.
The lil Joe build up to the horns in Call to Arms is my and the keys. It may not be a direct influence, but I get a Skynyrd feel to Call to Arms. Since Skynyrd is my #1 I have feelings that are uncontrollable.
All in one week: NPR gives me a free listen a week early Buy tickets to a show on upcoming spring tour Official release day, he announces two Ryman shows. Tix on sale next week.
Sometimes sirens send a ship off course Horizon gets so hazy Maybe get high, play a little Goldeneye On that old 64 This bit caught me off guard; never expected to hear an N64 reference in a country song
That was a rather lame line...and the songwriting was a noticeable step down...but that's to be expected since Metamodern is imo one of the greatest albums of all time. Loved it overall though.
I dunno, I kind of like the nostalgic value. Also, it seems like acceptance/appreciation/toleration for technology's a difficult thing to pull off in songwriting. It's pretty normal for lyrics to include talking on the telephone to your sweetheart, but get the fuck out of here if you ever mention texting a chick.
i think that's what impresses me the most. The fact that he put so much into some of those songs, but seems well balanced to me. I haven't even really given the lyrics much thought, because I'm so caught up in how the strings, horns, pedal steel, vocals, and keys all blend together.
Wonderfully produced...he's obviously got a brilliant ear...still hope for further Cobb collaborations
I'm almost disappointed it's the first song on the album because it's my favorite. So good. Going to his Houston show on May 10th, so pumped. So glad you posted this. Gonna try to knock show at the Ryman off the bucket list with this one.
Haven't listen to the new album yet but just here to say Sturgill is awesome. Saw him in Tucson about a year ago. My God, I felt he got ripped off that I paid less than $40 for 2 tickets.
Been finding excuses to run errands all over town today so I can keep listening to the cd in my truck. It just keeps getting better with each listen.
this thread deserves some credit for making me try em out. i hate country, and no one was going to change that. and i definitely wouldnt just because he had a hit. but i think he gets what music is all about and i can appreciate that. i forgot his new album was coming out til i just saw rogans cast. its p good.
Loved it live. Sturgod on an electric Gibson Les Paul Hollow Body and a full horn section but no strings
