How do you fix the acidic soil? Just rip it up and start over? My hydrangeas are kinda bluish white. I'll post pics tomorrow, but the sod I planted a few months ago is starting to get spotty. Apparently people have been trying for thirty years to get grass to grow with no success. The previous owner sodded it twice.
Little known fact: the killer from I Know What You Did Last Summer - he actually lives in the shed in Baron's backyard.
http://homeguides.sfgate.com/treat-fungus-st-augustine-grass-51800.html Actually this sounds a lot like what is going on with mine. A bunch of mushrooms have been popping up lately.
we have a weed that was blown in from along time ago in hurricane Charlie . it is hideous . by the way have you ever noticed . it's ok to have lawn service and people do it for you , but ? if your neighbor does not take care of his or hers lawn as you would do. it's a bitch trying to keep your lawn nice . fast rideing mowers with no bagging . no clean equipment to do your yard . this is a problem in a climate that is basically one continuous season . edit add on : next door person has a water tree that had china-berries or gumballs . come blower time , blow away from theire client your neighbor into your yard .
The Honda mowers are fantastic. My brother has one that's twenty five years old and never done anything to it except replace the wheels. My dad used it for ten years and then gave it to him. It seriously still cranks on the second pull every single time.
Have any of you ever had to use fungicides before? My st. augustine grass is getting spotty and mushrooms grow every time it rains, so I'm almost certain that is the problem. How the hell do I go about doing that and which product should I use? double RL
So we have a crepe myrtle in our front yard, it was just planted when the grass was maybe 2-3 months ago. I know nothing at all about pruning and maintaining those, but I think that I don't need to do anything until after the first bloom, which may not happen this year with the young tree. Anybody know if that's true?
I have no idea what kind of look you're going for but I have 2 crepe myrtles that I just let grow. I never cut them back or anything. Full bloom every year. Ive noticed that some around me that get cut back bare to just the main limbs either bloom really late, barely bloom, or don't bloom at all. The only thing I ever do to mine is cut back a few limbs here and there to even up the tree or get them out of my way if they're too low for me to get under on the riding mower.
You shouldn't prune them until January or February. Don't do it now. There's tons of guides on how to prune them for the look you want. If it's small, let it go a couple of years first.
St Augustine can be really susceptible to fungus issues. Not sure if it has fairy ring or something like that, but it can be a real pain in the ass to get rid of. There's lots of info online about dealing with it. I'll text you some good ones in a minute.

Got these bushes between our house and the neighbors. You can see in the second pic where a couple of them didn't bloom at all this year. Are they dead at this point and need to be removed? I was debating taking a chainsaw to the base of the apparently dead ones and removing, but wanted to check with the experts first.
Take some pruning shears and snip a few small limbs to see if the ends of the branches are dead. If they arent then leave it. It they are dead then keep cutting back until you determine if the entire plant is dead or not.
Anyone have any idea how to rid myself of this bullshit? It's a brighter green than my lawn and grows faster. how to do a screen shot
what kind of grass do you have? If safe could use 2,4-D to kill it then put down a good preemergent this fall and next spring to keep it from coming back.
The fungicide is working, but I now have patches where there's just no green grass growing and you can see the old roots. Should I dig those up and put some sand/topsoil down in those spots? They aren't large spots but I'm just worried whether new grass can take root there right now.
This is good advice. That's fresh from seed crabgrass in your picture. If you have any really big patches of it, you should spray it thoroughly or dig it up and make sure you get the bulb or nut that it forms under the soil. I'd spray the little ones with a 2,4-D product and then make sure you use a pre-emergent very early in the spring or late winter and again in the summer to keep it from germinating in your yard. Crabgrass is an annual and will die in the winter. It leaves seeds that grow the next season. So if you'd prefer to not spray it now, that's fine and just make sure you hit the lawn with a good pre-emergent next winter/spring. The pre-emergent should be down before the soil gets to 60 degrees at an inch deep. I had a bad problem with it in my yard when I bought my house. By using this liberally in late winter/early spring, it's absolutely been nonexistent for the past three years. Edit: Well fuck imgur fucking their embed code up. Here's the link... http://www.fertilome.com/product.aspx?pid=44ee91f1-a784-4310-a4a5-513508093c04 I wouldn't dig them up. I'd spread some top soil/sand mixture in those areas and water them. Those roots could be dead, but might not. Also, that will give the good grass a good area to spread through. Depending on how large the spots are, you may be better off to just put sown sod in those areas and sand in the gaps.
Probably going to be really pissed off after this weekend. Talked about it a few times in here but doing a huge yard renovation myself. Seeded the backyard a little over a month ago with compadre zoysia from Seedland and its doing great(will try to get some pics for you guys). There are some big bare spots where a thunderstorm washed some seed away and been battling crabgrass but overall it should be about 90% filled in by the time it goes dormant. Front yard was after that and I seeded that about 16 days ago. Had to buy the seed from a different company because the first one was out of compadre for the year, bought it from Hancock Seed. 16 days and I can't see any germination yet. The other compadre had decent germination at around 14 days so I'm getting pretty worried, going to give it through the weekend but if I don't see any by monday then it's probably not happening. This puts me in a really tight spot, I have a totally bare front yard so I would preferably not like to keep that way all the way through winter till next May. I'm about as late as I can be to seed again, my area gets it's first frost around November 1st so they recommend planting no later than 60 days within that window. I would like to seed with compadre to match up with the backyard but really don't feel like wasting another $200 on seed, even if they offered to send me free seed I don't think I would like that cause don't have any faith in their company. Seedland (the seed that germinated in the back) has zenith zoysia seed still available. This is what I'm leaning towards, prefer compadre but apparently there's not a huge difference in the two.
If I start putting down some zoysia in the borders of my yard, will it overtake the fescue over time?
Yes, it doesn't spread as fast as Bermuda but it'll spread and take over fescue.itll look pretty bad in the winter though when the zoysia goes dormant. Will look like you just have dead grass with it mixed with the fescue.
I would bitch till they gave me my money back or free seed. Plant rye for the winter so you have a cover and just try again next spring with the kind you really wanted.
As I expected still nothing. I bit the bullet and bought zenith this morning from the original company. I'm really late to be planting but I'm going to give it a try. Think I might try to use clear plastic to get soil temps up when the nights start falling into the 50's. If I can extend my growing season just a little that way then I should be good. Zoysia usually goes dormant when you get a few nights of 50's in a row. I was looking at the temps from last year and looks like there was just a week last year in October that was like that, so if I could use plastic for the few days in October like that I should be able to keep it from going dormant into November and I think that will be good enough to make it through winter. Fingers crossed.
Russellin4885 I hope you get it growing man. Zoysia can be a bitch to start from seed. It's worth it though... gifs upload
