Not comparable, imo. Carroll and Belicheck both had playoff teams at their first stops and Saban had a long history of college success before the Dolphins.

And Carroll was mediocre at best before going to USC and same with Belicheck before meeting Tom Brady

Texas A&M was a top 10 team at some point in Kevin Sumlin's era. Does that make him a great coach?

Saban's first HC stop was Toledo (not Mich St) where he went 9-2. He was successful at both stops before going to LSU where he was successful there too.

Give him Drew Brees and he'd be successful in Miami too.

Carroll and Belichick had playoff caliber teams.
Saban turned Michigan State into a solid program.

All 3 are worlds away from how bad Ole Miss was under O.

Mediocre may as well be Alabama right now from how bad the Ole Miss teams were under O.

If they sign Brees over Culpepper, Saban is probably still in the NFL.

Maybe Orgeron will be good at LSU, but there's almost no reason to believe he will be.

He's the Flava Flav of college football. You don't have Public Enemy without him, but get the fuck out of here on a solo release.

He's said this multiple times since he's been here. I also enjoy this revisionist history that Saban was an abject failure in Miami that got run out of town...He was 9-7 his first year, including a six-game winning streak at the end of the season, had the 6-10 year with a bad QB situation, then Wayne Huizenga was begging Saban to stay after Bama started going after him.

No question, I think. He'd never get another offer with as much zealous pursuing like Moore did to get him to Bama.

Yes and then 6-10. No one was blaming him though. That roster needed a lot of work. Cam Cameron went 1-15 with them the next year.

Yeah, edited the post to reflect as much. Even his "bad" year wasn't horrific...can't imagine there are many coaches in the NFL currently who haven't had a 6-10 type year at some point.

I never understood people saying he was a failure. He was a winner in one season then just shy of .500 in the next. It was just very bizarre the way he handled things on the way out. I can't think of anyone that went pros to college either before him so it just looked like he was running away.

Some years the breaks just don't go your way. Even in college the difference between 11-1 and 8-4 can be a couple plays here and there.

I mean I know us on the board brings it up and laughs at it but the media never mentions it but you still get audio quotes from Nick Saban. I guess you are right though, if Petrino was actually to be considered for another NFL job again it would be brought up. You keep hearing the Saban stuff because he was going to be the head coach of the Cowboys the last 5 years and now the Packers.

Social media has really won too many people over with the "He's one of us" talk that has been flowing. I'd say 25%-30% of the fanbase is super happy about Coach O being the HC at this point. With that being said, I'm willing to say that somewhere in the neighborhood of 90-95% of the fanbase wants AD Alleva out after this fuck up.

What? Saban is no where near the pioneer of going from the NFL to college, Spurrier, Erickson, Walsh, Holtz, Stallings and many others that did it before Saban. Even Petrino went from the NFL back to college before Saban did it.

The problem was most of the "sources" were boosters, who thought Jimbo was coming (some have been friends with him since he was here and had a delusional and inflated self-belief). Dellenger is a good reporter for the Advocate. The rest of the local medical, yeah, they got played.
