I'm pretty sure I was one of their really early subscribers...maybe in it's first year or so. Who called their tip hotline asking how to beat certain levels?? Yes. But in fairness I also still have a couple of completely unplayable wrestling games as well like WWF Attitude and the ECW game made by Acclaim. Attitude was notable since it was the first to use actual ring entrance music. But the game doesnt hold up in the slightest.
On the topic of retro games, AGDQ Winter 2017 is going on right now, there's some amazing runs being done. The Shovel Knight race was incredible, Ninja Gaiden race was very cool too. I didn't watch it, but I saw there was a run with a dude doing Punch Out blindfolded. I think it was Summer 2016 where a guy did Symphony of the Night blindfolded. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI3DTtB-a3fJPjKtQ5kYHfA
What would you all consider your favorite genre of game? I am fan of Fighting games simply because of the challenge and it always takes me back to crowding around the Arcade machines watching and waiting for your chance to take over the game and destroy the person next to you. Granted it's not the same anymore sitting on the couch playing ppl online but the spirit lives on I suppose. Currently I tend to collect side shooters or SHMUPS as it's know in the dork community. I have a bunch of insane Imports for the DC and the Saturn.
action rpg is my favorite genre but so few of my favorite games come from that genre because i am hyper critical of every game that comes out of it. the genre seemed to have so much promise before bioware and bethesda had such success with mass effect and fallout 3 and decided the route forward was more casual. luckily i have the from soft offerings to lean on but i would love to have a broadre selection. *edit also, i have the witcher
im playing diablo 3 atm and enjoying it. i still play a ton of online shooters because for some reason im still good at most of them and its a good way to do some social gaming, but i feel like ive been leaning on those games for a while and really want a few games to pull me away from that genre
When i was a kid it was side scrollers (because NES) and flight sims from my PC days. Then FPS games in the Half-Life days. Now, i'd say its probably 3rd person action games (Uncharted, TLoU, etc). I really love any good game though,I am equally happy playing Child of Light, Witcher, Dishonored or Dragon Quest Builders (pardon the recency bias).
Sports Fighting (including mashers like Smash Bros back when i was in college and had roommates) 3rd person adventure
C&C Red Alert Zelda 2: AoL Wolfenstein 3d SMB3 There were many more along the way but those were the ones that I would shun social interaction to play at any time.
A bunch of N64 games: Super Smash Brothers Mario Kart 64 Pokémon Blue Goldeneye But mainly it was Halo: CE. That combined with the online experience of H2 had me hooked.
Interesting sub-topic, not worth a new thread though. What is your favorite box art of all time? Not sure this is my favorite but its up there, and since I am watching AGDQ Castlevania race right now, i'm going with it
These were big for me in the 2600 days.. So wanted the game to be just like the box art.. needless to say, was disappointed but loved the games anyway. Each one came with a DC comic book drawn by George Perez. I still have them....somewhere...
I was 13 when FF7 and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night came out, so that was the golden age of gaming for me. Metal Gear Solid came out the following year I think. And I have a different outcome than this thread's stated purpose: that golden age kind of ruined gaming for me from then on, because no game or group of games could ever compete with that experience in 1997-98. I didn't play nearly as much in high school, dropped it completely in college, and after that only played the occasional Madden or CoD.
Just gonna list my most played games. Gonna omit a lot of systems I had because I didnt really play them much. Also, I probably played every years sport's game, but not gonna list those either. SNES: Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG , MK 2 GB: Pokemon red N64: Smash bros PlayStation: Crash Bandicoot was life PC: Diablo 2, Command and Conquer Red Alert First ever online game I played was this shitty MMORPG called Tibia. Everyone at my school got pretty into it around 2000-2004. So much wasted time. Xbox 360: I really got into gaming in high school with Halo 2 (my first fps) and later Halo 3/COD4. (Played all of these on the 360--was a few years late to the halo scene). X1: Destiny (I have like 60+ days on this game, feels bad man)
My brother and I pretty much strictly played college football and basketball games growing up, we'd get the new version every year. These two stand out: Also, Morrowind is probably my favorite game of all time. Experienced every possible bit of this game and the expansions.
morrowind was just plain awe inspiring for me at the time. as much as i hate what bethesda has become, i will always appreciate what they have contributed
No. Besides, Roberson graduated in '03. In NCAA '02 you could also sub Terence Newman in at quarterback and run the option with him and Sproles, which was hilariously effective.
I did but I never beat that game, its one of the great regrets of my life. I could get to the final boss but he'd whip my ass every time.
So many great games I played as a kid, many mentioned in this thread (I was 5 when Super Mario Bros came out for NES, had Intellivision before that). The games that turned me into a gamer were Final Fantasy 1 (1987), Dragon Warrior (1989), Baseball Stars, and Sid Meiers Pirates! Gold (1993). Those games required a level of dedication beyond what you'd get from other sports or action games. Of course I played all of those games as well, but the 4 games I named are what made me the nerd I am today.
Right, but the NCAA games were a year ahead, for example if it was still around it would be NCAA 18 this cycle. I do remember him and Sproles being godly in 2004, but IIRC Sproles had awful stamina
I don't remember which year's verison it was, but I remember spending a ridiculous number of hours just wrecking shit as Ricky Williams in NCAA. So much fun.
You're right about the years, sorry. And if Sproles got tired, you just sub in Terence Newman and his 99 speed at RB and profit.
