Next time they come through Arizona I'll have to try to catch a show. Anyone have a decent list of new albums/artists to check out? I've been slacking on my red dirt this year.
What in the hell is this from Aaron Watson? http://www.rollingstone.com/country...tsons-rollicking-new-song-outta-style-w449653
It's weird when an artist pivots like that this far down the road in their career. I guess they think they'll pick up enough new fans to outweigh the ones they lose, but it's not like Watson is some 25 year old young gun on the circuit. I've never been the biggest Aaron Watson fan (though I do think July in Cheyenne is a fantastic song and really like some of his earlier stuff), but I'd probably still go to a show of his if it was convenient, just try to time my piss breaks to fall whenever he plays his new stuff. It's so much more frustrating when it feels like a cash grab, rather than an actual (typically failed) attempt at finding a new sound, like Bingham's Tomorrowland. Bingham's my dude, so this may be an unfair comparison for Watson, but I think he genuinely thought he could redefine his style for artistic reasons, it just happened to fall flat on its ugly face. Some artists can do it really well, like Sturgill, but it's a tough row to hoe. I'm kinda drunk and haven't been really into the music scene in five plus years, so I could very well be way off. I did listen to Casey Donahew's latest album driving out to the ranch last weekend and he still sings about getting drunk and white trash people, which reminded me of college. In a way it was nostalgic, in another, it was kind of disappointing. /ramble
Agreed. If it's a genuine attempt to try something new, I can be ok with it. But in Aaron Watson's case, you can't put Fence Post on your last album, then turn around and drop the new single without looking like a fake piece of shit.
"God knows I'd never sell my soul to rock n roll, to rap, or wear those tight skinny jeans" ... makes a song with pop hooks.
I became aware of James McMurty recently through Spotify and have been hooked. dude is awesome give me more stuff like that. tia
Read an interview recently where he said he's finally got some new songs and is going to get back in the studio sometime soon. Been 4+ years since Little Victories.
Love all these guys. Feel like McMurtry was a little ahead of his time. Probably didn't catch on because of his political views too. Got the old Cory morrow and the songs we wish we'd written on. Sad that guy disappeared.
Band opening for them is the Steelwoods. Know anything about them? Should I stay here or go next door to booze in preparation for Whiskey Myers?
Seeing Lucero and John Moreland back to back weeks in September here in Tallahassee. Music Scene here in town has gotten so much better in the last 2 years
None, but I'm going to two at red rocks Isbell and Sturgill Then we got Isbell in Mobile when I get back.

SC posted him somewhere, believe the Sturgill thread, but check Tyler Childers out. At least give this song a chance.
