I know you posted something before but point me in the direction of a 2-person tent you recommend for cold weather climates

How cold? I asked him the same question and was considering a single layered winter tent. He talked me out of it and his rec was the same tent I was eyeing, MSR Hubba NX(I got the 1 man). 1st trek out I had a 70° night before the ascent. We had a storm roll up the valley and pound us when we were in higher altitude. Single digit temps, high winds and driving snow, that was a long night. The last night back down in the valley we had hard rain all night. The Hubba did great in all environments. The stormy night it sounded like a freight train was bearing down on me all night but the tent was a rock. I stayed warm and dry. Highly rec it.

Are hammocks better for warm weather to sleep in? Haven't tried one for rain or cold weather

hoping to try sleeping in my hammock (with mummy rated to 15) for at least one night in Olympic Nat'l park in a couple weeks. Low of 39, should be briskly pleasant.

A bit below freezing. I won't be in it much in winter but it still gets sub-freezing in summer. 20 degrees perhaps

If you have a good enough sleeping bag, cold shouldn't be a problem.

BP is probably right, I'm a snob though and have a hilleberg for winter camping.

Thanks, thought it was interesting there are hammocks that are quilted/lined to help with the cold air underneath.

But then there are a ton of small companies making hammocks for backpacking, not just enoo

looking at this pack - https://www.rei.com/product/895595/osprey-kestrel-48-pack
would I be able to carry this on most flights? also I already have a similar color 65L Osprey, any recs for a similar-sized pack? Thinking something that's in that 50L range for overnighters and some traveling. Many likes would be given, thanks.

Close, at least not for delta's limits if it's fully packed out. If not completely full, it might be able to go in sideways without messing up the frame.

Once again I think I'll take your advice. A buddy has both and I played around with them. The Arc belt is awesome but the moving parts concern me long term. You get your MRs from their website? Also gonna try to check out Kuiu.

Got them off the site. I will need to look in my packs, but I think I had the same dude make 2/3 of my MRs.

I looked at a few different pack makers including Kuiu, but ultimately settled on MR because of how much I loved the OG terraplane.

There is a certain smugness that comes with having a base weight under 20lb, under 15 would be even better but I can't get myself to go that minimal and still have a bear canister.

I'm right at a 18-18.5lb base weight & I'm running out of ounces to shave. I've considered purchasing a smaller pack, as the Catalyst is overkill for most trips... But, I love being able to pack a large bear canister both vertical & horizontal in it.

Anyone using a Hennessey Hammock? I bought one to use and was curious some of the best ways to get it setup before I go out camping with it.

Has anyone ever used the Marmot Limelight? I am in the market for a 3 person tent and leaning towards that one. Also considering the North Face Talus and ALPS Tasmanian.

I plan on doing some weekend camping. Going to start car camping with the girlfriend, and try to get her to backpack with me sometime. It will be used in the fall, winter, and spring (SC summers have been too hot lately). Budget is up to $250. And I found all three of the tents on sale. I originally looked into the Nemo Losi tent but I just can't justify spending over $300 for a tent right now since I don't camp as often as I used to.

Do you have to purchase it right now? If you wait until Jan-Feb, the price of last years models drop significantly. You can probably get something that doesn't weigh 5lbs+ in your price range, which will be important if you backpack vs. car camping

Well I got my tent. So all set there.

But what about a folding saw or hatchet? Do any of you get much use out of them when gathering firewood and whatnot?

  45. UrsaGrande

    UrsaGrande wait, what?
    Donor

Car camping I'll take a hatchet to cut down some of my firewood into kindling, otherwise in California gathering isn't too common, have to buy firewood.

Backpacking? Forget it, I'm not carrying that extra weight.

Novice here: If one were to be going for two nights is there a checklist of what they should take or an idea of how far they should be able to hike?
