Cousin Eddie I can't quote your post for some reason, but I separate them. I usually run the morning after a squat/deadlift session. I don't want running to take away from my lifting so that's how I handle it. You may stagger it differently depending on your goals
I don't have the time to work out twice a day (okay, that's a bad excuse, but I don't have time to work out twice a day and do anything else with my life) so I typically try and alternate run heavy days with lift heavy days. I'll work out secondary muscle groups on days I run for longer and primary muscle groups on days I run less. Heavier lifting days are HIIT and you just gotta power through it.
Weighed in today at the gym, down 21lbs in a month and a half. Not bad considering I'm lifting 5 days a week
Hey a.tramp being the bike expert you are, if I wanted to start training to do RAGBRAI next year, do you have any advice? Hoping I can do it on my Trek Hybrid FX 7.3 but I know it would be easier on a road bike. Ever thought of making the trip up for the ride? You could probably catch a ride up with Lance and Mellow Johnnys.
My advice would be to work on cadence and endurance. You are going to want to start doing drills to get your pedaling rpm into the 90-100 rpm range. That will use slow twitch muscles (I know, it seems off since you are actually spinning faster) which will keep your legs fresher as you are not powering through every stroke. Also, you will want to keep your heart rate and wattage down for the majority of the ride in order to not blow up. It may be slow going to start with on the training as you will be at a pace in which you can greatly increase and will want to but staying aerobic is going to help you conquer the miles. Add in high wattage intervals via sprints of hills and that will help raise you physical capacity while maintaining your aerobic heart rate as you approach the ride. Basically your training will need to build to the point where the amount of time you spend on the bike weekly will be equal to or slightly greater then the amount of time you spend on the ride and get your refueling and hydration clockwork down.
Always have back problems during tax seasons. Went and got a massage yesterday from a hilarious 65yo Asian woman. She said to come back next week and in the mean time at least two nights take an epsom salt bath for 30 minutes and just wait and see the difference. Ab to get high af and take my first bath in like 20 years. Got that lavender scented salt mmmm
Yeah, baths are awesome if you have an awesome tub. Gross as fuck obvi., but we lick butt holes so this isn't where I draw the line
Anyone got a homemade protein bar recipe that isn't stupid like I see on Yummly with 10 lbs of honey? And don't say your dick. Spoiler First guy to reply with "my dick" will get likes though.
does sitting cause your back problems? i'm an attorney and after about three months on the job and my lower back killing me, i bought a standing desk. game changer.
Take a shower first homey Few of us tried to get standing desks and were denied by the office manager. Our company wastes a lot of money on stupid shit but health is not one of them
I know the guy who started it. Lot of my friends swear by it but I could never get into it. I've heard some flavors are better than others.
I've only had the Red Velvet and Strawberry. Both are ok if you are jonesing for some ice cream and can't control yourself. Me, I'd rather have a scoop of the real shit and limit my portion then consume a pint of Halo Top. I'm sure it would be better in a Milk-shake type format with some protein powder and maybe some almonds or something like that.
Right. It tastes extremely icey to me. I also think there's an art to what temperature you freeze it. Mine always comes out of the freezer as a rock and then softens very quickly. I've been enjoying plain greek yogurt with a scoop of chocolate mint Optimum whey + fruit as an ice scream substitute.
I've only tried a few different kinds, and it's true that some are better texturally and tasting than others. It really helps to let it soften for 20 minutes before eating.
I bought a cheap standing desk on amazon. It doesn't go up and down, but I can put my laptop on it and stand when I want. Pretty sure we have a standing desk thread and that's where I saw it. A few people in my office have used ikea end tables for standing desks, but those don't leave much room for a mouse and a place to write.
I'm an attorney and our offices have pretty good ergonomic chairs. Haven't really experienced any major back pain in the 3.5 years since I've been working here, but I make an effort to do plenty of lower back strengthening at the gym. My hip flexors have always been hopeless, but the sitting has probably exacerbated it.
Attorney here. I do have the capability to raise my monitor and stand but it's not really practical for me as I'm 6-6 and the fucking things don't go high enough for me to be 100% comfortable. I have started a habit of standing up when I'm on the phone. That helps a lot. I've also locked my desk chair so that I have to sit in a very upright position. Also, I simply get outside and go walking, whether that's getting off a few stops early on the subway or walking several blocks just to get lunch. A lot of small tweaks can add up to some sizeable changes.
Down 15lbs with 5 days left on Whole30. Don't know if I am going to hit my 20lb goal but still plenty happy with the results. After the first week, my energy jitters from long duration cardio exercises and new diet tailed off and have been feeling pretty good. As a plus, wife is down double digits as of this morning and she has enjoyed the meals on the plan and she is one of the pickiest eaters alive. She has even agreed to continue on with the diet once the 30 days is up. We are going to mix in a sensible amount of dairy and whole grains with an occasional dessert but stick with it. Edit: for the record, we both cheated once on the diet. My wife got the promotion at work she has wanted for years so we enjoyed a nice milkshake from an old-fashioned ice cream parlor to celebrate.
Impressively short honeymoon period. Another (youngish) attorney checking in. I have had two low back episodes in the last two years. Desk and chair at work are shitty for back/hip issues. I get up and walk around as much as possible which helps my back and, as an added bonus, enhances my ability to procrastinate. I sometimes do the standing-while-on-the-phone thing, if I think of it. Work won't pay for a better desk and chair, so I'll probably pick up a cheapo standing desk and/or desktop converter. I've got a desktop PC with dual monitors, but the cables are long enough that I could just swap them onto a standing desk as long as I keep it close enough to my PC tower, I think.
i've been here longer than three months, i'm just saying that after three months i got a standing desk. but yeah being a lawyer kind of blows.
rolling out my piriformis with a softball or lacrosse ball has been the best thing for my lower back/hip issues from sitting all day. God it hurts so good.
if you have a long commute that time sitting in your car every day adds up a lot. whenever i've had long commutes i've had more trouble with my back and sciatica
Standing desk is the shit. If you are even thinking about getting one, pull the trigger. I have the standing desk (goes up and down) and a walking treadmill underneath. I average about 5 miles a day on the treadmill and it has helped my health tremendously. I used to have major pains on the back of my legs in the calfs and hamstrings that has gone away ever since I got the stand up desk. I think the whole setup can be had for less than $2500, well worth it imo.
Started whole30 thanks to a.tramp for the help. Starting out at 187 hoping to get under 175. Sucks that I am sick while starring it
Gonna try to find a window where I can try this. How do I get started? Does it matter if my wife is breast feeding?
Good luck, I'd think you get there, especially if you work out even moderately. Get the book and read it. I'd say you need about 4 days to ramp up. It's short read and then get into prep time. Throw shit out that you don't need and shop to be ready for the first 3-4 days. Unless you drink your wife's breast milk you are okay to start.
Hi, yes, I had a bilateral varicocelectomy done last week and have been bed/chair ridden since. Back and hips are killing me. I can't wait to do some ROMWod/Yoga X again
For those that are curious and want to click that link/looked into what that is... Don't do that. It's ball surgery. You don't want to know.
Thankfully they didn't directly cut into my balls, but my sack is about the size of an orange right now in case you were curious
