Wet face Good lather Sharp blade with the correct angle Pass 1: with the grain Pass 2: across the grain Pass 3: against the grain Break the mindset of mowing the yard or scraping whiskers off like Popeye did Bluto in the cartoons. Passes 1 and 2 reduce stubble to the point where you're probably good. Only do pass three if you really need it, and most guys with light and irregular facial hair could almost always skip it. With practice you can get a complete shave in 5-7 minutes if you're deliberate but not rushing.
Interesting to look back. I have a ton of shit I don't use. Basically all I need is a Merkur slant, feather blades, bloc osma, martin de candre or castle forbes, and trumpers skin food.
I realized recently that I haven't bought one shaving-related thing in over a year and I'm still probably set for 10 years.
Been wet shaving almost 5 years now and I only think I've bought blades twice. Maybe 5-6 shaving soaps and creams total. Hey me too.
I'd be interested if you have an extra slant, feather blades, and aftershave lotion/splash you're looking to get rid of.
I'm basically 100% face lather, you should be fine. Takes some practice to get it right no matter the technique.
I spend less in a year than most people do in a month. And virtually all of that expense is on shaving cream and I could cut that down a ton by using the shaving cream from b&bw.
My plisson brush is beat to shit. Ive always had my eye on a rooney stubby heritage 2xl but Im worried I'll just beat it to shit as well. Thoughts TYdeFan05 ?
I can't recommend Palladin enough. They do limited "drops" of around 20 brushes at a time. If not them I'm using a Morris and Forndren or however you spell it. Those are hand made by Lee Sabinni who owns(owned?) Rooney. His hand made a are a little more dense to me. Just my opinion though. Edit: just saw you were looking at the heritage line not the standard. The heritage 2XL is damn near perfect if you like a dense brush that's gel soft. I love mine and it would be in my final 3 keepers pile
Excellent info. I've been dying to replace my Simpson Duke that I stupidly left in the hotel in Cancun. I have been getting by with my backup Semogue but it just isn't the same.
There's so many new brush makers out there just in the past couple of years. I can't keep up. The old houses are usually solid.
Eh, I've settled into my routine of one razor, one or two types of blades and Palmolive or Wilkinson shave sticks.
I've spent maybe 25 in the past two years on stuff just because I stock piled so much. And all I bought was some musgo real citrus because it was on sale.
I just finished and it was easily the best shaving experience I've ever had. No pain or discomfort afterward whatsoever The only issue I kinda had was under my nose. That may be the only area that didn't get as close as it did when I used cartridges. I'm sure that will get better with experience, though.
Go top to bottom first pass ignoring the hairs closed to your nose. 2nd pass go across the grain carefully to get the straggler hairs up by the nose.
I shaved Sunday and once again it was great. Have a work thing tomorrow and wanna shave, but there's not a ton there. Is it okay to just do one cycle against the grain when I don't need a full shave or is that like taboo?
Why don't you just do one pass with the grain? Should take care of what's left without too much irritation.
I could do that it just doesn't get quite as close as I'd like when doing multiple passes. Didn't know if I would need to do the first and second pass before going against the grain or if it's ever okay to just do one single pass against.
After nearly 5 years mine is no more. Left in the hotel I stayed in last week. They said they haven't seen it
Aw that's terrible man. I still remember the night i got mine. Was drinking at a bar and got an email alert, was all excited and everyone kept giving me weird looks. Hope you're able to find one on the shave boards. If I remember correctly weber is only doing the PH now. Really wish I could get my hands on a weber ARC.
I haven't forgotten I just got sick last weekend so maybe I'll get after it this weekend. I threw out a ton of samples recently...I knew I should have hung on to them.
No worries bud. I'm hardly in need of more shaving stuff, but it doesn't mean I'm not compelled to grow my collection.
Man, I am a huge asshole. I just got my first alum block. What the hell have I been doing w/o it for the past couple years? Not only does it soothe irritation and stop the bleeding from nicks and cuts, it makes it look and feel like they never happened in the first place. Fuck aftershave.
A couple interesting posts on mantic's blog about some West Coast shaving branded razors and brushes: http://sharpologist.com/2016/12/west-coast-shaving-razors.html http://sharpologist.com/2017/05/wes...il&utm_term=0_990dc25104-78239a7378-344188449
