Ok I need some lawn advice and I have a few separate issues. I have meyer zoysia grass that I water 3x per week around 5:00am M, W, F. 1) The soil is compacted and I have had several large spots of grass just die. I got a tiller and laid down more sod. It seems to be doing ok but now I losing more yard. The original sod on the yard is maybe 2 years old. 2) Bermuda is taking over spots in the yard as well as weeds. I have the lawn sprayed by chem lawn currently because I have 9 acres property to take care of so I have to sub some stuff out. I am open to so alternative suggestions at this point though because I have spent a small fortune on the yard. 3) My dogs will not stop digging giant fucking craters in my back yard. Anyone got any tips on changing this behavior. 4) I am almost certain my sprinklers are not set up right. Some shoot to far and others do not seem to be covering the entire yard. I have a key but I think some of the heads will have to be moved or have heads added. Who would I talk to about this? I am definitely not using this landscape company again.
splicing/transplanting of my giant hosta is taken hold very well, and my others are finally popping up too (cleared it to transplant and waiting another week or two before mulch/pinestraw) yard lookin good tonight
When did you do yours? I've been recently looking into propagating some of my hydrangea's and jasmine.
last week, you wanna do them when they just start budding i did my hydrangea before a freeze late march and its coming back fine, turned the stems into a hard brown but its slowly turning back green
I asked this question in the gardening thread, but figured I'd see if anyone has any other opinions in here. You guys have any solutions for moles/voles? I've got tunnels, mounds, and holes running all over the place.
go to sams and get a giant thing of chili powder, mix in some water to make a paste, launch that shit into their holes
Full disclosure: my house would need to be falling in from squirrel damage before I bought a cat. My parents have an outdoor cat for varmits and it works like a charm. Catches a mole almost every day.
I have Bermuda grass, newly sodded last year around this time, and for the most part it came in great so far this year. Most of the yard is dark green and thick, but some of the more shaded areas of the yard appear to be dead or dying, and another full sun area that got scorched pretty good last year is really thin and patchy as well. Should I throw out some grass seed in these areas or is there a better step to take?
Bermuda shouldn't really scorch, it loves heat. I guess you could have problems if you had a big drought and didn't water at all. Long as it's not a big area I probably wouldn't worry too much with seed, just fertilize well and make sure it's getting enough water and it'll spread fast. If it won't grow in that area or isn't spreading then you probably have a soil issue. The shaded areas are more of a problem, like I said bermuda loves sun and heat so your always going to have problems with bermuda and shade.
Get these vibrating spikes. They work. I asked two different commercial lawn guys and they both recommended them. I was sceptical but gave them a try. They vibrate and beep once a minute. Moles don't like it and then relocate to your neighbor's lawn It takes about two weeks to work but I've had them for two years now and no more moles. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sweeneys...75035&wl11=online&wl12=19241613&wl13=&veh=sem
Going to have to give these a try. Currently have a vole/mole (I really don't know which kind). He's really not that big a deal he only has one tunnel that he uses, which is tearing my yard up a little but much more the problem is my two dogs trying to get him. The dogs are doing a lot more damage then he is.
Ended up giving this thing a try to get that mole. Little fucker is sneaky though, has been through the trap 4 times without setting it off. Going home at lunch and if he's not dead in the trap I'm digging a 5 gallon bucket in the hole, filling it with water, and hanging some juicy fruit gum over the bucket (apparently they are really attracted to the smell). Not very humane of me but that dudes gotta go, my dogs are going to rip up my entire yard trying to get him.
If I'm putting sand down for bermuda, please remind me what kind to get? I feel like I read something where there is a good and bad kind. I have a HD nearby, so I'll likely do that.
Single guy just moved in next door. PO had religiously took care of the lawn. This guy mowed on a rainy day, with mower set to mulch, after not having mowed for two weeks, on the lowest setting. Clumps everywhere.
I don't remember what the instructions recommend but I have mine about 40 feet apart. I just put them in the main area where there had been mole activity and they have kept moles away from my entire backyard.
My lawn is nothing but clay and this fucker is loving my yard. Update on my attempt to "Prestige" this mother fucker, he just made a new tunnel right around the bucket. I'm really not wanting to use these spikes to get him out of my yard, wanted to just kill him and be done with it but I can't catch this dude to save my life so I'm about to give them a try. Was also concerned with if they would bother my dogs at all.
I've got centipede lawn in N. FL Previous owner let Bermuda creep into yard and is now currently about 20% of yard. I bought sethoxydim ( Bonide 7458 Concentrate Grass Killer, 8-Ounce ) to kill the Bermuda over a couple treatments. Then was going to resod with centipede. Anyone with similar experience? Previous owners also had a pretty well landscaped yard with multiple beds. They were retired and just played golf and worked in yard. I have 2 kids and travel 50% for work so I can't pull weeds faster than they sprout. I bought this ( Gordon's Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide, 32 Ounces ) to spray beds to kill grass and weeds. In the beds are elephant ear, wondering Jew, roses, azalea.
Im looking to kill some unwanted grass in a area I'd like to landscape with perennials and evergreens. Any advice on products to use? I tried going organic at first with soap & vinegar then I hit it with roundup to no avail (soap and vinegar actually worked better).
Just buy some generic gylphosate. It's the active ingredient in round-up. You just mix with water so you could do a heavier mix if you need to but that will kill any grass that you want.
I got a Husqvarna with a Honda engine when I bought my house 4 years ago. Have never had a single issue. I think it was $350 at Lowes.
noo fuck clay. if there is one good thing about clay subsurface its no moles but it dries out like a bitch, i have to go out there and slam a screwdriver down into it every month or so when its moist to break it up
Finally got rid of my mole. Went by home depot and picked up some things that look like worms but our poison. Since he only had one tunnel I put one in two different spots. He ate one of them within a day and no signs of the mole since. That thing was starting to drive me crazy so very happy to be done with it.
Used some Southern Lawn Weed and Feed and then waited a while and put some GreenMax on it. My back yard looks great but my front yard is now scorched.
Mole update: Saw evidence other day that maybe I didn't kill the mole, or there's another mole? Tunnel was raised up in a few spots. Came home yesterday to about 15 feet of the tunnel dug up and one my dogs chilling with a baby mole in it's mouth. This is getting to be a lot of fun...
She's great at killing baby's but the adults she has problems with. She has now killed 3 baby possums and a baby mole, and I live in the middle of the city. There's some rabbits that have been hanging out recently in all our yards and I saw a baby rabbit yesterday. Hope that thing doesn't wonder into my backyard or it'll be next. My dog has almost gotten the adult rabbit twice so the baby probably doesn't stand a chance.
This has always worked well for me. Edit: I'm not sure why my Amazon link is not embedding correctly. Here's another try: https://www.amazon.com/Wire-Tek/b/r...50557011&field-lbr_brands_browse-bin=Wire+Tek
I tried another trap and the mole went through it like 6 times without setting it off and once it went off but didn't get it. Hoping with my dog digging up a chunk of his tunnel and killing a baby that they will get the idea and just stay in my neighbors yards.
