That's fair, definitely some lulls, but the highs of Rosetta Stoned, Wings for Marie, Right In Two all really resonate with me

Felt the inspiration to give 10,000 Days a digital spin tonight. Honestly I'd say Viginti Tres is the only track that I'm not down with. Sure, out of context, Lost Keys and Intension are pretty weak, but I'm a sucker for transition tracks, and they work in the flow.

Gonna keep things Tool'n with this '98 Kalamazoo soundboard now

Tool was my favorite band when 10,000 Days came out, and I was underwhelmed even then. It has not aged well for me. The Pot and the talk box part of Jambi are cool, but otherwise I think it kind of stinks :idk:

10,000 Days grew on me, but it's the weakest album in the catalogue imo.

I'm a huge fan of Rosetta Stoned, underrated track.

    Vicarious is obviously excellent.

    Right In Two is epic.

I've always loved that song but it has a newfound respect from me after seeing it live.

Same for Jambi - was never into that track but that crushing breakdown part is insane live.

I've read that it was the point where instrumentally they matured as a band.

I love 10,000 Days, but take that with a grain of salt because doctors will later tell me that I'm what they refer to as "mentally retarded."

And I counted 55min of solid music on 10,000 Days.

I'm not suggesting it's their opus, but to say it's the weakest album in their catalog seems a stretch.

More a reaction to your "by far the weakest" comment. But I'd put it above Undertow.
    My personal ranking would be:
    AEnema
    Lateralus
    10,000 Days
    Salival*
    Undertow
    Opiate*

Excluding Opiate (since it's an EP) and Salival (since it's a compilation), here is my ranking:
    1. Ænima
    2. Lateralus
    3. 10,000 Days
    4. Undertow
They are all great albums. I used to put Undertow over 10,000 Days, but echo what others here have said about the maturity and musicianship on 10,000 Days.

Here's the setlist from when I saw them last Jan in Nashville. We actually ended up with really good seats because there was a southern blizzard and a bunch of people apparently couldn't get to the show. So me and my buddy just moved closer. Forgot the opening band but they were followed up by Primus which was my first time seeing them and it was pretty fucking good.

    Viginti Tres
    No Quarter
    (Led Zeppelin cover)
    The Grudge
    Parabol
    Parabola
    Schism
    Opiate
    Ænema
    Descending
    Jambi
    Forty-Six & 2
    Intermission
    Drum Solo
    Sweat
    (-) Ions
    Stinkfist

Viginti Tres and Ions I guess were played by tape according to the website I looked at.

It was a pretty bad ass show.

10k days may have more technical musicianship but Undertow has more rage/emotion. I know Maynard's getting older and he's not gonna stay pissed off forever but that caused a drop in quality in their work IMO

As a side note and not to derail outside of Tool but your avi reminded me of how I would rank PJ albums. As with a lot of other bands where I like their entire body of work generally the albums that I have listened to the least or that's been the longest seem to creep up my rankings.

Because like others have echoed with maturity and what not, I always dig both Undertow and 10000, however some days raw angry Undertow is better to me and vice versa. I think Lateralus flows the best as an album but at the end of the day it's like nitpicking a 10. It's enjoyable to discuss for sure, but no slight in being the 9.997, 9.998 or 9.999 behind the ten, IMO.

I even like salival over 10,000 days solely for the covers on it. Like I said I like all their stuff but find myself listening to 10,000 days a lot less than the rest. Wish I had seen some early 90s shows.

Quite a few of my friends were in the same boat as you.

I had a z71 Tahoe at the time and told my buddy that had come in from NC that there was no way we were missing it. Put it in 4wheel and rolled out.
