    41. Counterstrike (Black Feet Trilogy 3), Josha Dalzelle, 7.5/10.
    42. The Last War (Last War Book 1), Peter Bostrom, 4.5/10. I rounded up to 3 stars on Goodreads to help the author since it's a new book, but this one was weird. It had all the right elements: weird alien threat, gristled old CO, ambitious young XO, intrahuman tension, shitheel politicians, and so on, but they didn't come together well. I'm not sure how else to describe it-- it was just off. Good idea, poorly executed.

    7. Nutshell - Ian McEwan (4.5/10)
    8. The 50 Best College Football Teams of All Time - Bill Connelly (7/10)

    13. 'Salem's Lot - Stephen King (6/10)

    15. The Jaunt - Stephen King (9/10)
    16. The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Attwood (6/10)

As I said in the book club thread, Handmaid's Tale is a better TV show than book but I think that's mainly bc the book is a POV story and the show can go outside and explore the world more/better. It was fine but I guess I was let down.

The Jaunt on the other hand was fucking awesome. It's only 16 pages in PDF form so it's a super short story. But it is great. Supposedly going to be a movie at some point. I hope it happens. Worst part about the book was that it was so short. Wanted more from the world.

    15. A Natural History of the Senses -- Diane Ackerman (7/10)
--This book is by the same chick as "The Zookeeper's Wife" which I didn't realize when picking it up. It's not a fiction book but is about the psychology/science of how each of your different senses work. It also cites lots of random quotes and anecdotes from literature and movies about the senses. Lots of fascinating info; only reason I rated it 7 instead of 8 or 9 was it drug some. Been working on it for a couple months. It's the kind of book you pick up and read a little at the time.

I've read some Gibson. I like Burning Chrome. Neuromancer is a must. I don't love the genre, to be honest. The techy, streety, grungy vibe isn't my thing. I couldn't even finish Snow Crash.

-Rating it so highly because a) it was well-written and fun/easy to read and b) it gave me new perspective and led me to think in some fascinating new ways, both about addiction and just about the brain in general. I wrote some about how it's changing my perspective on addiction here if further interested:

I really, really enjoyed this. Didn't know Benioff had written a novel until the last month or so and now I'm excited to check out his other work too. The fact that he made two guys searching for eggs an interesting story is pretty great. Was surprised at how funny it was. Also surprised at how hard it hit at times.

    Starting this tonight.

Also, dcon79 has been trying to get me to read HP for years. Finally going to do that this summer. Read the first one back in 5th grade but for some reason I never read another book, even though I enjoyed it. Cool to see you rip through it like you did.

    40. Dragon Teeth by Michael Crichton (7.5/10)

The Red Sparrow novels were just outstanding. Great writing, plot, characters, banter, ect. One of those series where I wish I read them sooner, but kind of not because waiting for the 3rd book is going to suck

Dragon Teeth was good. Historical fiction about rival paleontologist hunting for fossils in the west. It felt more like an Erik Larson novel than a Crichton imo. Which is fine by me because Im a fan of Larson.

    17. Solitude: A Return to the Self -- Anthony Stoerr (7/10)
Most people assume happiness in life comes from relationships with other people. But what is to be gained from solitude? I was interested in this question because it seems like technology is making the world a lonelier place. It's from the 80s and written by a "psychotherapist" from back when people still talked about Freud so it's a bit dated but I picked up some good info. My favorite part was all the profiles of writers/artists/creative types, what their private lives were like and what that meant for their work.

It was great...nothing earth shattering, but the coincidences that occur in coaching are so cool. So random that Leach managed to hook up with Mumme. The little bit of history tied into the book was enjoyable too.

This is a very good overview of the Battle for Normandy, less on the landings on D-Day than I expected but goes into much greater detail of the rest of two plus months that fighting took place in Normandy. Tons of information, but wasn't a fast read for me

Loved it. One of the more fun books I've read over the last few years. Someone on Goodreads put it perfectly - if Dark Matter and Back to the Future had a baby. Pretty damn close to being what it's about. I think the best part for me was how many different books it turned out to be in one. Lots of unexpected changes/movements never really allowed the book to get too comfortable, and I liked that.

It also ended up being a really funny book and I laughed out loud a ton. Highly recommend.

Only The Shining, It, Salems Lot and now 11/22/63.

Between the Lies of Locke Lamora series (just started book 2 last night), wanting to finish the Dune series (only read the first 2), and wanting to get through more of King's stuff the to-read list is looking nice
