What are you thinking of renting --- a house or condo? Generally speaking most of the growth and shopping/touristy attractions are near the bridge or westlake areas. Its so rural, if I were looking with retirement in mind I would look on that side of the lake to be closer to amenities and closer to Roanoke which is the nearest decent sized city. Our place is close to the mountain and state park which is great for a weekend or even week long vacation...but as development has taken off in other areas its pretty limited in terms of amenities and that would make it tough to be there on a long term basis. On the plus side the view is nice and its tough to get this in the more developed areas of the lake.
the good smallie i landed today the one i didn't land broke my 4wt as i was reaching for it and then the line snapped. it was a huge smallmouth :/
did you send it in for warranty yet? this one broke in the middle tip section, i've likely hit it there with a nymph or streamer at some point.
Not yet. Broke the very tip night fishing, and didn't even realize it until the next day. Was quoted 3-4 weeks turnaround by Scott.
I bought some frog togg wet wading socks to wear my wading boots. Also, anyone have a rec for a 3 weight rod and reel?
like the frogg togg stuff. for the price it's good. is this a small stream rod or are you trying to tightline nymph any? seems like a lot of companies are making 10-11'6" 3wt rods for tightline/euro nymphing. Orvis, Echo, TFO, Redington, and Fenwick all have good products on lower end. I stay on the lower end of the price scale, so those are what i feel comfortable giving an opinion on. The Echo Base rod I've tried was awesome, and I have their 6wt Ion reel with an extra spool that i like, they may have the best low-end offering out there. for these weights the reel is not a big deal, invest in the rod and the line. for instance you can get a Redington Surge 3/4wt reel for around $50 and that's literally all you could need for a small stream rod.
Really depends on how much you want to spend, High Cotton. Like HOOSINSC said, rod/line are much more important than reels for this type of setup. What size water do you plan on fishing, and will this setup primarily be used for trout or panfish/small bass.
North GA streams, was definitely looking to spend more on the rod and line than the reel. Small stream and small pond rod. Looking at a few of the Sage models. I have an Orvis 5 wt and would like to broaden my brand horizon.
If you're fishing small streams, look into a Redington Butterstick. My brother has a 7' 3wt, and it's an absolute joy to fish. Great for throwing dries, but you can fish whatever with it. More backbone than you might expect, too.
Bought 2 Sage Accels for Christmas. 6 wt for me and a 3 wt for Dad. Threw all the hottest stuff before buying, and that model suited us both the best, including some much more expensive (Scott, Orvis) options. Quick action, great distance/accuracy potential, and still forgiving enough for someone who only gets to fish a dozen days a year. If anything, his 3 wt is even more impressive than my 6. HTH
not even an atl guy, but this hat is great. seems they were sold through Orvis Atlanta and Sweetwater Brewing.
I was just reading some reviews on that. I might have to try one out, I want a new light weight setup.
had a house on Tim's Ford growing up, never even thought about fishing for browns on the Elk. damnit.
Went out of Orange Beach Friday for 8 hours. One king mackerel that we had to throw back, only 23". Handful of Spanish mackerel Handful of vermilion snapper Some Bonita that the captain kept for bait And last but not least, a blackfin tuna. Captain said it was only the second one they've caught not counting over night trips.
that was my guess, the area had all the normal signs of spin fisherman. hell, some dude showed up at a popular area known as the Grates with a baitcaster. was funny seeing all the fly fisherman around and here's this one guy throwing a plug
http://www.kiro7.com/news/local/ecl...t-dump-salmon-near-san-juan-islands/596543936 estimated 30k salmon escaped.
I have never even entertained the idea of purchasing a drone until watching this. Holy hell that was awesome
there are NZ guides that use drones to spot fish upstream and not spook them. found this marlin video on those guys vimeo page
guess they're stocking those fancy leopard rainbows now. the brown was really colored up, prespawn already showing.
My fishing buddy texted me last minute yesterday to see if I wanted to go for snook. Broke my PR and my friend said it was the biggest he’s had in his boat so far this year. I was the only one to boat a snook. Definitely a top 5 fighting fish for me. Spoiler 31 3/4 inches (slot is 28-32) and weighed over 12 lbs. Pictures don’t do it justice. It was a slob.
Trip to Costa Rica was a success. Pulled in a Bunch of snapper and black tuna,2 barracuda, and 4 rooster fish. Roosters taught like Hell couldnt imaginge getting one on a fly. Trolled for bill fish for a couple hours with no luck thing we’re gonna try and go back in January when they are running
I will be in Costa Rica in January for our honeymoon. Hoping to get out for pez gallo one day, but just want to get the lady out on the boat really. Can’t wait.
We were in Drake Bay/Osa peninsula. Great trip, looking forward to going back. Got woken up by howler monkeys a couple mornings and went without tv for 10 days
Costa Rica is on my bucket list, looks like you had a blast. Doing another charter out of Clearwater on November 11th. Gag grouper, mangroves, and hogfish will be the targets
Headed to the Outer Banks in a couple of weeks. 2-3 days in the sound, the rest in the surf. Hoping the boat rental for the soundside is worth it, and to catch on the fly rod. Reports of trout in the sound, and puppies and blues in the surf.
Bought leaders and salt flies last night, with new floro for the spinners. Big stick should be ready for the surf, braid seems to last forever. Absolutely geeked. Toes in the sand this time next week.
Busted out a new Allen 8wt/TFO BVK combo and got a blackfish this morning before work. Those things are tanks - and eat better than just about anything. People have been finding them under dead animals (pigs) since Hurricane Nate. Thankfully just a crap trap buoy worked for me.
Swilled down some coffee and heading out in a few. Caught specks on the flyrod in the sound on Monday. Windy but boat/fishable. Cancelled boat yesterday with 25mph sustained, gusts to 40. Got sandblasted on the beach instead, and caught nothing. Heading south to Buxton around lunch. Rumor is that the water temps are too warm to draw bait out of the sound yet, but still hoping for some drum. Regardless, still at the beach, and fishing, so life is good.
Fished the Delayed Harvest on the Chattachoochee @ Whitewater Creek / East Palisades yesterday on the north side of the island. Fish haven't migrated much since mid-week put in, but did get a bite as far south as I waded down a few hundred yards on the eastern side island. I had my buddy check Paces coming in and there were over a dozen guys right off the boatramp. Owsley
