Only 7/10? Thought this book was supposed to be GOAT tier? Looking back over your other ratings looks like you're a tough critic I guess; hard to break much past an 8

I liked Anansi Boys better. I don't know about GOAT tier; maybe for some people it is. It bogged down in the middle for me. I still enjoyed the premise and Gaiman's sense of humor/dialogue.

    24. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter #4) - JK Rowling (9/10)

Really, really well done. This one was the slowest of the first four, I thought. The fact that they didn't arrive at Hogwarts for a good 25% of the book was interesting. But wow, when it got going, this book had some of the best storytelling of the series thus far.

With all the hype that book #3 received from friends, I expected a dropoff. It seemed like #3 was when thing turned darker, but to expect it to really hit the fan wasn't until the last three. So I was way surprised (pleasantly I might add) that this book ended up packing the punch that it did, specifically with the last 15-20% or so.

The characters continue to be well drawn. One thing I worried about early on in this one was Harry and Ron's beef with each other (mainly because it seemed so forced to start). I was dreading it lasting the entire book. Super happy it didn't do that so they could get back to being friends.

Don't want to spoil too much but seeing the big bad himself make his first *real* appearance was really nice. That + the way this book started was a cool difference from the first three.

Not a whole lot else to add except I loved it and am pumped to see the way this series reaches its ending.

I'm not done yet but just started reading the "dreamland" book about the opioid epidemic...holy shit this is good. And this is from someone that already knew a ton about the subject. A big part of it is the writer, Sam Quinones. Haven't seen many that can match this nonfiction writing

    25. What If?: A closer look at college football's great questions - Matt Brown (6/10)

It was fine. I obviously love CFB so the subject was easy to get into but there were things about the book that annoyed/bothered me. Each chapter had the same structure: intro, "but let's go back before all that", before tackling the "what if?" and how things would have gone. I was disappointed that the "what if?" parts were maybe 20% (or less) of each chapter. I get the setup of it all but I was kind of looking for more on what each event would have done differently for the teams/coaches/players/conferences/sport overall, vs. the background of each story.

Quick, easy read. Could have been better but a nice way to get me excited for the upcoming season.

Time to begin the finish to the HP series.

The complete incompetence of the Union early on really sours my opinion of Lincoln. I have a tough time understanding how they could be so unprepared and stupid.

Yeah the first years of the war in the east for the Union is bad and the continual changing of leaders by Lincoln was certainly a big part of that

The Liberator: One World War II Soldier's 500-Day Odyssey From the Beaches of Sicily to the Gates of Dachau by Alex Kershaw 8/10 This was a very interesting history of one man's time spent fighting in Europe during World War II. It's a great and often painful read about the war on fronts less publicized and touches a little on the feelings of the men that were fighting in other areas in Europe during the war.

Afterlife was a really good, and face paced. Really liking Sankey as an author. Always a fun, action packed book.

Sons and Soldiers is "The Untold Story of the Jews Who Escaped the Nazis and Returned with the U.S. Army to Fight Hitler"

Outstanding perspective about a group you dont really hear about too often. Highly recommend to those interested in WW2

This was a 400+ page slog. I'm interested in the subject but still don't know as much as I'd like to about it. Part of the problem may be I'm too much of a political and economic novice to grasp some of it, but dude could certainly make it easier. He's too fond of the type of sentence that lists 10 examples and takes up a whole paragraph. Just a couple then etc is fine Mr. Fraser. And he uses too many "fancy" words. But hey, if nothing else I now know what insouciance and jeremiad mean :thumb:

    26. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter #5) - JK Rowling (8/10)

In the "Harry Potter is now a darker series" run (3-5), this is my least favorite of the three. That said, I still enjoyed it. Towards the end I realized that this felt like more of a setup book than anything, getting us ready for the final two books of the series and all the stuff that should go down in those.

Some things that stood out to me:

    - Umbridge was an amazing villain. Legit hated her throughout.
    - Dumbledore keeping things from Harry was a huge bummer the entire book but I thought his explanation made sense.
    - Neville is randomly becoming one of my favorite characters.
    - Harry working with Snape so much is enjoyable mainly because they both hate each other.
    - Draco and Harry's rivalry moving forward is going to get bad.

Liked it, didn't love it. But still an enjoyable read. 8/10

Order of the Phoenix is probably the most polarizing book in the series. Some love it, some have it as their least favorite.

I was very interested in the central premise of the book -- having a strong purpose in life makes you happier/healthier/more successful. However, after the first chapter or two I feel like he got off the subject and more into just general health tips (dudes a public health professor). I also felt like a lot of the psyc/Econ/public health research he cited was a rehash of things I've read in other books. I am inspired to live with more purpose now though and it was an easy read

It was okay, obviously a group of very short stories, definitely thought the first of the group was the best by far. The other three were just okay, but it had been a long time since I read any Steinbeck

I actually haven't read much Steinbeck really, I read East of Eden freshman year of college but don't remember much of it. I've never read the grapes of wrath
