I really do not like it. Is that a consensus or am I not far enough along? I mean, I think part of why I don't like it is that the conceit is so obviously temporary.
A guy I work with has read all of the Dresden books and Ghost Story is his least favorite and he really enjoys some of the books that come afterwards and is looking forward to Peace Talks. I think LT8 feels the same way as well. I'll read Ghost Story soon but am going in with a grain of salt
I'm starting back up with Death Masks. Been a while. I'll be listening to this one on audiobook, which will be different.
I finished Turn Coat yesterday. That was one of my favorites of the series. Starting Changes next. All I've heard is that it's possibly the best of the bunch. So I'm really looking forward to it.
Every time I see this thread bumped I get excited because I think a new book has been announced. Then I'm all like...
Sorry, but the only real news is that his next Dresden-verse short story collection, Brief Cases, is to be released in the summer of 2018.
He better hurry up. GRRM only has 1 more book to write, by Butcher's own timeline he still has like 8 more planned
Just started Side Jobs. After that I'll read Working for Bigfoot, and then I'll be caught up. Anyone have any particular favorite short stories/novellas out of these? I just started Something Borrowed (the story about Georgia and Billy's wedding).
I liked all three stories in Working for Bigfoot. Nothing earth-shattering in there, but still fun. I think my favorite out of the Side Jobs compilation is Heorot. Don't want to give too much away, but you get some backstory on Miss Gard.
Started Working for Bigfoot yesterday. It's short so it shouldn't take me long to complete. I think my two favorite stories from Side Jobs were The Warrior and Aftermath. It was interesting to see a new perspective of Michael and also get to read from Karrin's POV (the same with Thomas' story, but I thought Murphy's story was more interesting).
Not sure if this was ever posted. Brief Cases synopsis: The world of Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard, is rife with intrigue–and creatures of all supernatural stripes. And you’ll make their intimate acquaintance as Harry delves into the dark side of truth, justice, and the American way in this must-have short story collection. From the Wild West to the bleachers at Wrigley Field, humans, zombies, incubi, and even fey royalty appear; ready to blur the line between friend and foe. In the never-before-published ‘Zoo Day,’ Harry treads new ground as a dad, while fan-favorite characters Molly Carpenter, his onetime apprentice, White Council Warden Anastasia Luccio, and even Bigfoot stalk through the pages of more classic tales. With twelve stories in all, Brief Cases offers both longtime fans and first-time readers tantalizing glimpses into Harry’s funny, gritty, and unforgettable realm, whetting their appetites for more to come from the wizard with a heart of gold. Cover art spoilered (for size). Spoiler
I'm not sure if this was already common knowledge, but it's news to me, so, according to Butcher's website, Brief Cases will be released on June 5. Previously, I had only seen "summer 2018".
idgaf about Brief Cases, where the hell is Peace Talks. Damn all fantasy writers not named Brandon Sanderson Spoiler or Steven Erikson, or Ian Esselmont
I care about Brief Cases but I'm with you on Peace Talks. I'll take any new Dresden stories he feels like supplying
Finished Brief Cases this morning. FYI, the Working for Bigfoot trilogy is in this collection as well so if you haven’t read those yet you don’t need to buy them separately, just get Brief Cases. There were multiple different narrators in this audiobook. I thought the narrator who did Molly’s POV did a great job. We also get a Mouse POV in one of the stories.
Apparently during the AMA he said that his goal is to have Peace Talks done by September. That would put it on the shelves around spring 2019. Now let’s see if he GRRMs that deadline
Is Summer Knight generally considered the best book of the series? I remember it being substantially better than the others. I didn't make it that far past it in the series, maybe read one more.
Summer Knight is book 4. There are 11 more published books. I see it ranked pretty high quite often. But Changes seems to be the one most people consider the best, and for good reason.
My favorite is Dead Beat. Butters plays a major role in the plot for the first time, Dresdenverse history is expanded quite a bit with the backstory about Kemmler, the Erlking is introduced, and of course the reanimation of Sue the T-Rex is the climax of the novel.
Slogged through Ghost Story. Kind of a letdown after the greatness of Changes, but it picked up along the way. I love these books. Sad that I'm nearing the end :(
Changes was always going to be hard to follow up. The last books are really good though. He isn't done writing Dresden novels, just taking a while. I haven't given up on him yet, as I have given up on GRRM and Rothfuss (probably Scott Lynch too)
