While there are some stories that are related through the book that are questionable, it was still very interesting and holds a lot of value in the way that the landings were fought. The most interesting parts of the book to me were probably the information about all the German commanders out of Normandy on the day of the invasion. I have read many other works that cover the actual landings and will likely continue to read the countless books on D-Day.

I'm so far behind updating this thread.

    Been rereading all of Sanderson.

The Way of Kings - fucking awesome reread. Enjoyed it so much more the 2nd time which is saying something because I gave it a 5 star rating the first go around. Now being familiar with the characters and plot I was able to listen more deeply and pick up on lots of stuff I missed the first time around. Not to mention my knowledge of the cosmere and what is going on (shards, worldhoppers etc...) made it much more enjoyable.

Elantris - Also enjoyed it much more the 2nd time. Still not his best, but better than the majority of the stuff out there

The Emperor's Soul - Probably my favorite novella / short story of all time.

Up next is Warbreaker reread, then Words of Radiance which I should finish right around the time Oathbringer is coming out.

This was a great book. I'm disappointed in how long it took me to finish it (damn you football!), but I'm happy that I was able to read the last 50% in basically three extended sittings.

I was told by someone that this book had a sense of dread hanging over it the whole time until the very end and that was certainly the case. It ramped up as the pages went by until the big thing ended up taking place when it was all said and done. Couple of things in spoilers
I unfortunately knew that Dumbledore was going to die in this series coming in, so that wasn't a big surprise. And knowing that foreshadowing, it made some of his decisions throughout really puzzling to me. He so often looked for the best in people, and that ended up doing him in, in the end.

That said, going into the pensieve so many times to learn about Voldemort was awesome. So cool to be able to search the past, even if the memories were not always whole or had outright lies in them. Those were some of my favorite chapters in the whole book.
Sans the big battle, I have no idea what to expect in the seventh book. But I'm excited to dive into it. 9/10

I think the series is worth reading. There’s some high points in the last book too, and the first 5 are solid (with some disagreement on book 1)

People who say Wolves of the Calla sucks, suck.

Not really sure, I obviously read the first one because I was interested but it didn't do enough to make me want to read the rest right now. I'm more interested in finishing Harry Potter and reading some historical works beforehand.

    Keep reading eventually and form your own opinion. The rest of the books have a very different feel from the first book {which King didn’t intend on turning into an epic when he wrote it}

Always forget this thread exists. Congrats to all members of this year’s 52+ books per year club. I really don’t think i’ll ever get there, even after I tried to read more short books this year, still not going to come close. I blame the Malazan series (on book 4 now).

    32. In A Different Key: The Story of Autism -- John Donvan and Caren Zucker (6/10)
I was intrigued by this book because I read something about the "neurodiversity" movement -- ie there is no mentally "normal", just a spectrum across which we all vary. The book was easy to read by super long, 500+ pages...I stopped before the end because I felt like I had it down. It was also very heavy on the "story" of autism -- many chapters are just a biography of someone. I wanted more on the actual mechanics of autism, what it is, understanding it.

    33. Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City -- Matthew Desmond (9.5/10)
This guy is a 10/10 writer. Harvard sociologist but writes like the best journalist. Lived for 6 months in a trailer park and 6 months in the hood in Milwaukee to research this. Will help you understand poverty in a more realistic way than almost any book.

    36. American Assassin by Vince Flynn (Mitch Rapp Series #11) 8/10 This was a reread because of watching the movie recently, the book while much better than the movie didn't seem to be as good as when I read it before.

    37. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling 9/10 Very good, I think it started a little bit slower than the previous books but when it picked up with around 300 pages left I could hardly put it down or the ending. It also made it so I want to start the next book now as opposed to reading the two books I was planning on reading in-between. Being my first time reading the series I'm very excited to read the last three books now and will definitely be finishing them before the end of the year.

Anyone read the Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks? My wife has been on me to read it so I started last week. I was originally wary because she tends to like a lot of young adult type stuff but this is a bit more mature than that. It's similar to Mistborn (but obviously not as well written because there aren't many on Sanderson's level) except power comes from separating color from light rather than from metals. I'm 2/3 through the first one -- The Black Prism (it's a 5 book series and I think the first three are out) and it's engaging enough that I'll read the next two.

    39. The Longest Winter: The Battle of the Bulge and the Epic Story of World War II's Most Decorated Platoon by Alex Kershaw 8/10 I was really excited for this book and it didn't quite live up to my expectations but was still very well done. Tons of information about the Battle of the Bulge and the rest of the war afterwards from interviews with people who fought the battles.

new book. Gives a pretty unbiased look at it, which I wanted. I am in the immigration law/anti-private prison business, but I wanted a disinterested and academic look at private prisons and mass incarceration.

My original college major was advertising and I love the show Mad Men, but I'm still surprised how much I liked this book given it was written in the 1950s. A true classic about the psychology of persuasion in advertising, public relations and politics

    I thought is was OK.

Not really my favorite genre and took a while for me to get into. Debating reading the other two books. Certainly will not be prioritized.
