What is twitch.tv? Well, it was originally part of justin.tv that featured video game related content. It kept growing and was later bought by Amazon (did you know that if you have Amazon Prime you can link that to your twitch account and get one free subscription each month that you can give to your favorite streamer?!?!) These days twitch content isn't only video game related, you can find things like cooking, poker, and etc! nb4 "lol what loser watches people play video games" and here's my response to it Spoiler Which service has more viewers, Netflix or Twitch? Turns out it's the latter. A new report reveals that more people watch online gaming videos than HBO, Netflix, ESPN, and Hulu all combined together. SuperData Research's latest study reveals that gaming video content—such as Twitch livestreams, let's plays, and gameplay overviews—will have an estimated 666 million viewers in 2017. Approximately 563 million people watch YouTube's gaming content, whereas 212 million viewers hop on Twitch. Image via SuperData Research Those numbers don't just fall in line with 2016's data on YouTube and Twitch gaming content. This year's statistics show that gaming video content is growing. By the year's end, 185 million people watched gaming videos on Twitch during 2016, with 517 million checking out videos on YouTube. In comparison, HBO had an estimated 130 million subscribers in 2016, with Netflix clocking in at 93 million. Gaming's audience blows away the competition, and compared to 2017's numbers, gaming's video and livestream industry is just getting started. Image via SuperData Research There's also plenty of money to be made in gaming videos. The industry is estimated to earn $3.2 billion USD this year alone, with a staggering 56 percent coming from Twitch. And online gaming video content tends to appeal to a diverse demographic. Approximately 46 percent of all viewers are women, with an average viewership at 33-years old making $58k USD yearly. 52 percent live in North America, too, suggesting that the U.S. and Canada are major players in content creators' success. Image via SuperData Research Gaming video content clearly resonates with middle-class men and women, including those who may not have enough time after their workday to sit down and play games. It's unclear for now if other competitors will join in on the livestream and gaming video market in an attempt to compete with YouTube and Twitch. But it seems likely. Both companies are highly successful, and it looks like their viewership will continue to grow as 2017 fades away into 2018.
I mean saying Twitch has more viewers than Netflix or HBO isn't really surprising. "Are hot dogs or hamburgers more popular? Turns out, more people are eating free hot dog instead of $15 hamburgers."
Not if you stayed with Justin.tv. I’m not sure it’s still a thing. I’ve never been into gaming, let alone watching someone else playing. I’ve done 10 floors of hvac buildouts for Twitch here in SF in the last five years and only 1 for Justin.tv about 7 years ago.
Aren't you like 6'9", Odin? You think you could take on the two-time? The 6'8" powerhouse with a 37" vertical? The face of TwitchDOCTV?
You need an XBox Live Gold membership to watch twice I believe. so those hot dogs are $50/yr and still cheaper than Netflix Burgers, which is why most people eat 2 hotdogs (Twitch & Mixer) vs. 1 hamburgerflix
I'd invite any of the naysayers ITT to come join our audience during Madden Playoffs viewing games and participating in side-bar chat. It's a jolly good time. Especially if VictorJ24 is playing because LMAO he's so terrible
You can just head on over to www.twitch.tv right now and watch whatever you want on there for free. Also, I don't think you even need Xbox Live Gold to use apps on Xbox anymore.
how do you make money doing this stuff? i'm as into video games as anyone, but count me as someone who doesn't understand the twitch phenomenon at all
Yeah, you just need the URL and you can watch it in the app or in any browser. Though I've had issues with Mixer on my phone browser twitch.tv/tlau mixer.com/tlau
right but what are the reasons people watch and subscribe in the first place? what precisely would i need to do in order to make people want to watch me play video games?
walkthroughs for the role playing games sports games livestreaming sporting events - i watched most of the mayweather fight on twitch only video games I've watched are the previously mentioned Madden games though. I don't really RPG but I could see why it's a thing. Or watching someone that's absurd playing COD/Battlefield to try and learn techniques and shit
Be good at games (pro gamers) or be good at entertaining and interacting with your viewers. Then if you are able to be both of those things, baby, you've got a stew goin'.
Being entertaining, personable, and/or incredibly good at a game. Create your own emotes and stream often.
Ill watch dr disrespect and the cs go majors. Have no idea how anyone watches summit or shroud. They are boring as fuck.
i like watching shroud because he's so good at cs and pubg. that to me is the appeal for his channel.
The Doc is amazing. I think people who don't even give two fucks about vidya would be surprised at how entertaining that guy is.
Twitch always has high def streams of UFC and PPV boxing matches, that’s where I watched the McGregor/ Mayweather on there for free. Links go down randomly when they are caught, but there’s like 50 streams at once to choose from
Definitely forgot about that one since I don't go to Twitch for that myself but it's certainly true. I've seen in chats lately that that's pretty much all the IRL part of Twitch is. I don't really watch much Twitch. I'll basically just go there when I don't feel like playing a game myself to watch people playing the games I do play better than I can. When I started playing H1Z1 about a year ago my friend said I needed to check out the Doc so I did. His character/persona maybe a bit much to take at first but as you continue to watch you can tell what he's really like and regardless of whether or not you like it and stick around you have to respect the amount of work he puts into his stream. He's a streamer who deserves every bit of success he's achieved.
Nah, but a friend of mine with really nice tits has started a twitch stream, with videos, and i'm fairly sure thats her angle.
Watch? personal preference/enjoyment Subscribe? Most are free subs you get by being on Amazon prime. People that subscribe get access to previous broadcasts, other perks, access to vids/feeds. Would you like to see your favorite football player stream his offseason workouts and interact with people in his chat in between running routes and lifting? Watch your favorite basketball player in the offseason stream his pickup games and, again, interact with his fans while he does it? That’s what twitch is in terms of players/streamers. It’s also the place where people who watch esports almost universally watch the games/tournaments. So it’s basically like the current ESPN version of League/DotA/OW/CSGO
The previous broadcasts are free to watch for most streamers. i think i follow one guy where you have to be a sub.
agreed. i also think a lot of people also just subscribes to aknowledge the streamer "hey i like what you're doing. I want you to be able to keep this up and keep entertaining me.
