Husk is overrated imo. Plenty of other restaurants that are just as good.

I dined there 4 or 5 years ago and thought it was excellent.

A rising tide floats all ships though. It makes sense that there would be more quality options in town now.

Skip the main restaurant at Husk and just get the burger at the back bar. Make sure you get a shrub to drink too.

I haven’t read this thread but my buddy is having his bachelor in Charleston. Looks like 13-15 people coming. I hear King street is the place to be? Any suggestions or know of a place we should stay? Food? Goodfellas strip club is good I hear?

Heading to Charleston with the wife in about a month. Any recommendations on places/locations to stay? A buddy said anything south of Calhoun St is usually a decent spot for walking around.

Since many are asking the same questions every page or so, would it be beneficial for Pharoh to put the write-ups in the OP?

Thanks for this. We showed up at 5:15 to get on the walk-up wait up list. They gave us a 7 pm time. I remembered your post and we went to the bar. It’s in a cool looking separated building that doesn’t look at all like a bar. We split a cheeseburger. It was the best cheeseburger I’ve ever had. Then we knocked back some Old Fashioneds until walking over to the restaurant at 7:00. Didn’t get a Shrub. Forgot about that part.

My first recommendation is The Francis Marion. Second is The Renaissance Historic District. Those are the only 2 places I’ve stayed at in Charleston, and I liked them both.

Yep. Record heat and humidity last week. I’m a walker and it required frequent daily clothes changes.

It was overcast (cooler?) but wet. The local tv meteorologists called it record heat and humidity, so I went with it.

Kinda had a shitty Friday night.

My wife’s 30th was Friday so this summer I called McCradys and made a reservation for the two of us in their newly redone tasting room. It’s Sean Brock’s modern cusine over 11ish courses. Only 20 or so spots over two blocks each night. 6 or 830 pretty much. About a two hour experience. Kinda interactive with the chef I’ve been told. Wanted to do it because we’ve watched all of the minds of a chef on Netflix and there is nothing else really similar in Charleston that I know of.

So I call two weeks ago to confirm because I couldn’t remember if our block started at 6 or 630. The woman on the phone told me 7, which I remember thinking was odd because when I made the original reservations I remember thinking the time I was given was going to be tight based on getting home from work but it was the only time. So we get a babysitter and it’s like the second date we’ve had over the last 15 months and we never get alone time anymore.

Roll into mccradys at 7 and tell them that we have a reservation. They then inform us the reservation was for the restraunt and not the tasting room and they couldn’t accomadate is that night. Part of me died inside because we were both really looking forward to it. I was ducking pissed inside but didn’t cause a scene but it was obvious they knew I was pissed and they tried to smooth it over but was of no use. They knew they fucked up because I told them how during the original reservation I had reviewed mine and my wife’s food allergies with them and I know they don’t do that for just the restraunt.

The meal we had was great. They gave us Champaign and desert on the house but that shit didn’t do justice the disappointment I had. I’m kind of annoyed with myself that I’m not more of an ass when I get fucked over because I’m just not confrontational. And at that initial moment I didn’t want to get worked up in case I was the one who fucked up but it’s very clear I didn’t and I’m pretty sure they know it.

So this weekend i just stewed on it and feel like I need to express my disappointment with them. I don’t want to call and bitch just to bitch and I don’t want a meal comped. Just want them to know I wasn’t happy. I was thinking of calling and trying to make another reservation and explain how the original mishap happened and how much it upset me and I don’t want it to happen again and for them to please make sure everything is right this time.

What do y’all think? Should I just shake it off or be a little more direct than I’m usually?

The message is probably best delivered in person right as or right before they open to a manager, if at all feasible with your schedule. Outside of that I feel like you're just going to get the normal complainer treatment because it's hard to express your actual sincerity of not wanting any free shit over the phone

Yeah I tend to agree. That’s why I’m upset with myself for not taking care of it then. Lesson learned I guess.

I'm glad it worked out - most locals I know don't even bother with the main restaurant. Straight to the bar for drinks and a burger. Well done.

Lewis is better than Rodney Scott's- from my experience, it's not the same as Hemingway. As I understand it, they can't quite cook it the same in town with fire codes and stuff. Have to use charcoal at times. I've been to Hemingway since the Charleston one opened and it's still the best pork I've had.

I think they are both good but different. Here is my breakdown:

Lewis has really good pulled pork - better than Scott's ironically. Scott's pork is inconsistent - when it's good, it's really good but I've had dry pork there too.
Scott's has the best ribs I've had in Charleston and it's not even close.
Scott's also has a killer ribeye sandwich and fried catfish on the menu. They also have real deal pork skins.
Lewis obviously has brisket, turkey and hot guts - all very good.
Scott's has better sides by a mile. Lewis's sides are meh for the most part. Like afterthoughts.

I say do both. Scott's is damn good but the pork is not up to their Hemingway standards. The ribs are world class though. At Lewis's I would stick to the meat mostly and the corn pudding. Lewis would be perfect if they cared about their sides but unfortunately they don't.

They have a pretty fabulous smokehouse with a bunch of whole hog cookers - but my guess is they are using mostly Kingsford due to their location. With that said, my favorite BBQ joint in North Carolina (B's in Greenville, NC) cooks their hogs over Kingsford and their BBQ is out of this world.

Leon's for sure. They don't have a kid's menu but lots of things on the menu will be suitable for kids.
Downtown Home Team is always good for kids (outdoor area) and reasonably good in terms of food and drinks. Good atmosphere for games. Big enough that usually the wait isn't terrible.

Moncks corner is a shotbhole but music man is decent bbq/southern food. Gotten drunk at the tail race tavern a couple of times. Watermark and lakeside in bonneau Beach aren't terrible

There's nothing great or really above average out that way but there's some decent stuff

Edit - I think there might be a DIG in Moncks corner and their spots are always fun

Drive to Holly Hill and eat at sweatmans bbq. If you are on the lake it’s not far. Only open Friday and Saturday though.

Moncks corner fucking sucks. Worked there for three years. Nowhere good to eat there.

I can see I'm in the minority but I liked Scott's > Lewis. I didn't like how they gave you a piece of wax paper for a plate at Lewis...the grease everywhere was just too unappetizing to me. Also I just liked the food better at Scott's

John from John's Auto Clinic on Johns Island is my old neighbor and did all the work on my ancient Chevy Tahoe before I got a car that didnt have 250,000 miles on it. His work was quick, solid and priced right so I'd definitely recommend

Well I just accepted a job in Charleston and will be moving there after graduation in August. Am I right in looking at apartments on James Island to live? I'll be working in downtown. I've only been up there once but will be making a couple more trips up there between now and then. Would appreciate some recommendations on where to look.

James island/Avondale will be the best combo of affordability and location. Mount pleasant is better than both but is the most expensive outside of downtown
