This is a bit of a scandal. They've gone to a running clock. No stops for out of bounds or first downs in the fourth quarter.

    I'm not complaining.

It's not been publicized or announced. It's just the scoreboard in the stadium isn't working, so whoever is operating the clock is doing whatever TF they want.

Thought I was seeing things. The ref is signaling to stop the clock on first downs and out of bounds lays, but the clock operator must have the under bc that clock isn't stopping.

The in stadium clock isn't working , so that's helping too.

Clock operator does not give a single fuck. He ran it for 5 seconds after the injury stoppage. I though it was going to keep ticking through that.

Had to stop it there because it was inside of 2 minutes. He was pretty unconcerned with the momentary stops, however.

    Good work, Sem.

2017 IDAHO BOWL – CENTRAL MICHIGAN vs WYOMING

    WYOMING -3 CENTRAL MICHIGAN (45.5)

    MEGALOCKS LINE – Pick em

    Sagarin ratings – Wyoming -1

“Vegas” Implied Projected Score: Wyoming 24.25 Central Michigan 21.25

    The Game

    Potato Bowl time, yo !

This is a sneaky-good Friday afternoon match-up as Wyoming battles Central Michigan on the SMURF TURF in Boise, Idaho. Wyoming had a fine 7-5 record considering that their star QB Josh Allen missed some time with injury. FIRE UP CHIPS finished up with FIVE straight wins and ended up 2nd in the competitive MAC West.

    The Match-Up

Wyoming offense vs Central Michigan defense

It’s been really tough to watch the Cowboys’ offense this season. Even with a healthy Josh Allen under center the Pokes struggled to move the ball on the ground and through the air. The big story is the status of Allen. Right now he is expected to play, but as you know, a lot can change between now and game day when you are talking about a potential first round NFL draft pick nursing a “sore shoulder”. We did our work assuming he will play, although to be honest, we would be a little surprised if he risked a ton of money by playing in this game.

Allen has struggled due to a lack of weapons at RB or WR. Allen had just 13 TD passes this season (missed time due to injury), their leading RB has 474 yards and their top WR has just 520. Only one receiver had a catch of over 50 yards and that was a yuuuuuuge 53 yard reception by CJ Johnson. The Pokes ended the season ranked #125 (!!) in total offense and managed just 4.7 yards per play (#11 Mountain West). They finished up the 2017 regular season #114 in 3rd down conversions.

FIRE UP CHIPS had an excellent season defensively finishing up ranked #2 in the MAC in yards per play allowed, #55 in total defense (FBS) and #7 in pass efficiency defense (FBS). Amaze your local sketchy massage parlor employee with this gem – Central Michigan was #1 in the FBS in forced turnovers. They allowed just 13 TD passes all season and picked off 19. It seems to us that with Josh Allen or NO Josh Allen the Pokes are going to struggle to score points.

Central Michigan offense vs Wyoming defense

FIRE UP CHIPS were pretty average statistically this season (#71 offense FBS) but they did heat up down the stretch scoring 56,35,42,42 and 31 in their final five games. QB Sugar Shane Morris is a mortal lock to clear 3,000 yards in this game and has been solid this year, although to be honest, we are not crazy about the 13 INTs. That is particularly true when going up against an excellent Wyoming defense that was #2 in the FBS in forced turnovers. FIRE UP CHIPS have a balanced offense with an underrated RB in J Ward (988 yards rushing, 41 receptions), a fine 1-2 punch at WR (C Willis, M Chapman 1,400 yards and 14 TDs combined) along with star TE Tyler Conklin who is healthy after missing a lot of the season due to injury. It is no secret that FIRE UP CHIPS started to roll on offense once he got healthy. The bad news ? The Wyoming defense is excellent (#22 FBS, #1 yards per play allowed in MW) and yielded just 3,13,14,13 and 20 points in their last five contests. They had a bit of a SOFT UNDERBELLY vs the run but were excellent defending the pass (T7 FBS – 10 TD passes allowed).

    Motivation / Intangibles

Wyoming – This is a bit of a tough read. There is the Josh Allen distraction. And our Wyoming INSIDERS tell us that they are not super geeked up to be playing in Boise against a MAC opponent. Colorado St was close to home in their bowl game and we saw how much they loved it.

    Grade – Below Average.

Central Michigan – It’s a LONG way from home. And it’s cold, yo. The good news ? They are on a roll and can play the “nobody respects us” card. The seniors on this team have unfinished business (0-3 last three years in bowl games).

Grade – Average to Above Average.

    MEGA BOWL BITES

As noted above both teams are excellent at forcing turnovers and are ranked #1 and #2 in the FBS…..The combined turnover margin of these two squads is (+24)……Central Michigan only played five home games this season and are used to being road warriors……Close your eyes if there are field goals attempted from over 40 yards….The teams combined to go just 5/10 from that distance.

    Summary

Two really scrappy teams. Let’s goooo !

Josh Allen. Will he play ? Will he sit ? We feel that FIRE UP CHIPS are the better team (it’s close) and that they can beat the Pokes regardless of who starts at QB. If Allen decides to pass on the game we think the Chips win the game by at least a TD.

    Conclusion

Official play: Central Michigan +3 -106 (sent 5:12 pm EST Dec 19) (play down to +1.5

Always a good idea to bet on stupid coaches.

CMU's coach is calling 7-yard out routes all the way across the field from their own 9 with 35 seconds left in the half.

    So maybe he is stupid.

Six points in that quarter. We just saw a zero point fourth quarter in the Bahamas Bowl.

I don't feel 10000% confident about my over bet, even though that sounds crazy.

    Birmingham Bowl
    [IMG]

USF goes for 10th win against Texas Tech

A repeat trip to the Birmingham Bowl may not have been what South Florida had in mind going into the season, but with losses to Houston and UCF knocking them out of contention for a New Year's Six appearance, the Bulls have had to reset their postseason goals.

On the line when the Bulls (9-2) take on Texas Tech (6-6) at Legion Field on Saturday afternoon will be a program-first second consecutive double-digit win season as well as the opportunity for a fifth bowl win in their last six postseason appearances and sixth overall.

Quarterback Quinton Flowers will have as many as nine more program records within his sights to go with the 25 he already holds or shares, including wins for a starting quarterback (30), career rushing yards and touchdown passes.

And there's also the issue of getting back some of the national attention the Bulls had garnered with their 7-0 start.

Coach Charlie Strong made note of that after a recent practice.

"You get a chance to go play a Power 5 from the Big 12 Conference," Strong said. "You're going to get national exposure again, and we need to go out and play well.

"It's a good way to end the season."

The game promises to be an entertaining one with lots of offensive fireworks. The Bulls are averaging 38.3 points (No. 15 in FBS statistics), the Red Raiders 34.3. The Bulls have an edge in defensive numbers, holding opponents to 22.5 points per game to Texas Tech's 31.8, but they gave up 533 yards to UCF in their finale.

"I think they can match up well with anybody when you talk about speed and athleticism," Red Raiders coach Kliff Kingsbury said of the Bulls. "They can play with anybody in the country, there's no question about that. So we'll have our hands full. We know that."

Strong knows of Texas Tech's potential from the three years he spent at Texas.

"I've always had a lot of respect for coach Kingsbury," Strong said. "When I was in the Big 12, Texas Tech was always a team that gave you a lot of issues, a lot of problems because they can spread the ball out. They can score at any time on the field."

Two veteran quarterbacks lead the respective offenses.

Tech's Nic Shimonek is 12th in passing yards per game with his 295.6 average. He didn't start the regular-season finale against Texas, but came off the bench when the offense stalled and rallied the Red Raiders to the 27-23 victory with a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.

Kingsbury said the redshirt senior, who has completed 68.2 percent of his 434 pass attempts for 30 touchdowns against only eight interceptions, will start against the Bulls.

"I think that game really helped his confidence," Kingsbury said, "and I expect him to play at a high level in the bowl game."

Play at a high level -- that's exactly what Flowers did for USF last year in earning game MVP honors in the 46-39 bowl win over South Carolina. He rushed for 105 yards and was 23 of 32 for 261 more and two touchdowns. This season he ranks 11th in the country in total offense per game (324.7 yards) and will set a school single-season record for passing yardage if he throws for 312 against the Red Raiders.

"He is a real dual threat-type guy," Kingsbury said. "To deal with the transition into the new offense like he did and still have the same type success, I thought was very impressive going into his senior year.

"He's one of the best playmakers in America so we'll have our hands full trying to contain him."

Flowers is the team's leading rusher with 972 yards to go with his 2,600 passing yards. He has 21 touchdown passes against only six picks.

"Q can throw the ball over the top and the thing he does with his running ability, you can't leave your coverage," Strong said. "His eyes are always down the field, and he's always looking for a throw."

Senior Marquez Valdes-Scantling leads the Bulls receivers with 50 catches for 746 yards. Tech junior Keke Coutee is ninth in the country in receiving yards with 1,241 on 82 catches, a 103.5 per-game average that ranks No. 8 in FBS.

    Armed Forces Bowl

Army, San Diego State to match ground forces

In an era when spread passing attacks and quarterbacks working in the shotgun formation dominate the college football landscape, grind-it-out, ground-oriented offenses will be on display when San Diego State and Army meet on Saturday in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl at TCU's Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.

Army, known for its option offense that produced a nation-best 368.1 yards per game on the ground, is focused on dominating the tempo and wearing down opponents with its rushing attack.

And the Aztecs feature one of the nation's top running backs in senior Rashaad Penny, who leads the country individually with 2,027 rushing yards.

With two ball-control, high-scoring offensive attacks, San Diego State coach Rocky Long coach quipped that this could be one of the shortest college football games of the 2017 season.

"Army is known for running the ball and controlling the clock and that's what we try to do too," Long stated. "If it wasn't for TV and commercials, it would probably be the shortest game in history."

The two teams have met just twice previously, with San Diego State holding a 2-0 record. The Aztecs won by a 23-20 final score at Army in 2011 and picked up a 42-7 triumph at home over the Black Knights in 2012.

"There's no out-scheming people," San Diego State safety Trey Lomax said. "They know what we are going to do and we know what they are going to do. We are going to run the ball and they are going to run their option stuff. It will be fun."

Army (9-3) has scored 45 touchdowns on the ground this season. The Black Knights won six straight games earlier this season and own a 5-2 mark in games decided by a touchdown or less. They head to Cowtown on the heels of a thrilling 14-13 win against Navy that secured the academy's first Commander in Chief's trophy title since 1996.

Jeff Monken is in his fourth year as coach of the Black Knights. Over the past two years, Army is 17-8, including 12-3 in the past 15 games, and is making back-to-back bowl appearances for the first time since 1984-85.

"Army is the most physical and the most aggressive team we will play this year," Long said. "Army has simplified it (option offense) because they don't run as much triple option as Air Force and Navy do, but they do run zone-read option because they want the quarterback (Ahmad Bradshaw) to carry the ball.

"The quarterback carrying the ball gives you an extra blocker. If you are actually reading the triple option, there are two extra blockers. They line up in formations that make you believe they are triple option but they are speed option."

This will mark the program's seventh all-time bowl appearance. Army is 4-2 in previous games, and those six postseason appearances have been decided by a total of 19 points -- all by a touchdown or less. The most recent contest was a 38-31 overtime win last year at the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl.

San Diego State (10-2) ended the regular season on a four-game winning streak. Earlier in the season, the Aztecs defeated nationally ranked Stanford, the eventual Pac-12 runner-up.

Long is in his seventh season at the helm of the program and has amassed the most victories (64-28, .696) of any Mountain West coach since the league's inception in 1999. His teams have now reached double-digit wins in each of the past three seasons.

The Aztecs will be playing in their 12th major college bowl game and eighth straight. The team is 5-6 in those games. San Diego State is riding a two-game bowl winning streak with victories in the 2015 Hawaii Bowl (42-7 vs. Cincinnati) and the 2016 Las Vegas Bowl (34-10 over Houston).

In its last four bowl games, the Aztecs have averaged 35.3 points.

San Diego State leans heavily on Penny, who tops the nation in rushing yards (2,027) and all-purpose yards (2,698). He had 19 rushing touchdowns, two receiving scores and had three more touchdowns on kickoff or punt returns this season.

Penny's lowest output in any of the Aztecs' victories was 108 yards. Fresno State held him to 69 and Boise State to 53 (both losses).

"We saw a little bit of (Penny) when we were preparing for Air Force (which played San Diego State)," Monken said. "We haven't had any other common opponents where we had a chance to really watch him, which is probably a good thing. I'll lose enough sleep when we get prepared for him next week. I don't want to be losing any right now on account of him."

The Aztecs' other back, Juwan Washington, has 715 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. San Diego State is also comfortable in the passing game with quarterback Christian Chapman (1,847 yards, 13 TDs).

The Armed Forces Bowl is the only collegiate football bowl game that has hosted all three U.S. service academy football teams. Air Force (2007, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2015), Army (2010, 2017) and Navy (2013, 2016) have all participated in the bowl.

    Dollar General Bowl

Dollar General Bowl could be shootout

The Dollar General Bowl has all the makings of a high-scoring shootout between a pair of conference champions led by prolific senior quarterbacks.

Toledo, champion of the Mid-American Conference, will take on Appalachian State, co-champion of the Sun Belt Conference, on Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala.

The Rockets (11-2) are averaging 39.0 points per game. They wrapped up the MAC title with three straight blowout wins, including a 45-28 rout of Akron in the conference championship game.

Toledo quarterback Logan Woodside threw four touchdowns in the win over the Zips, capping a dynamic senior season and prompting Rockets coach Jason Candle to call him "the best passer in school history."

Woodside, the MAC Offensive Player of the Year, passed for 3,758 yards and 28 touchdowns with five interceptions this year. He eclipsed the 10,000-yard mark for his career this season.

Woodside's weapons including running back Terry Swanson, who rushed 1,319 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, and sophomore receiver Diontae Johnson, who caught 72 passes for 1,257 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Appalachian State (8-4) can put up points, too. The Mountaineers bounced back from consecutive midseason losses at UMass and at Louisiana-Monroe with three straight wins, including a 63-14 rout of Louisiana-Lafayette in the regular-season finale.

Senior quarterback Tyler Lamb accounted for five touchdowns in the win. All four of Lamb's touchdown passes went to freshman receiver Thomas Hennigan.

Lamb has passed for 2,606 yards with 27 touchdowns and six interceptions this year. He also has rushed for 539 yards, averaging 7.7 yard per carry, with five touchdowns.

Lamb has started 48 consecutive games, and he set a Sun Belt record with 90 career touchdown passes.

"The records come with great teammates and great coaches," Lamb said this week. "Once you have that and you work on your game and put all that together, the records will come. But if you win a lot of ballgames, records will come, too. That's what our (focus) was: Winning a lot of ballgames, winning conference championships, winning bowl championships, and here we are today trying to end it right in our senior year."

Both teams feature successful young coaches, too.

Candle is 21-6 in his two seasons at Toledo and was rumored to be a candidate for several of the open Power 5 coaching positions. It looks as if Candle will be staying in with the Rockets for now, though. This week, he agreed to a contract extension through the 2023 season.

"The success of our program is the result of the unified effort of our players, coaches, staff and everyone in Rocket Nation who supports us," Candle said in a statement announcing the contract extension. "To be a MAC Champion is a tremendous accomplishment of which we can all be proud. At the same time, we are even more focused on our mission of continuing to build on our program's tradition of success. I'm proud to be a Rocket and proud to represent this great university and great city."

Scott Satterfield has enjoyed similar success during his five-year tenure at Appalachian State. He oversaw the program's transition to the FBS level and has the Mountaineers in a bowl game for a third straight season.

"The most successful transition from FCS to FBS of any school, I think, in the history of our sport," Satterfield told AL.com "Now three straight bowl games and two conference championships, our program is at a big-time high right now. We have great administration from the top down. We've got great coaches and players that really care about our program, and I think that's why we've been able to make this transition so successfully."
