I used nothing other than a mason jar, water, grinds and a strainer after it set on the counter for 24 hours.
http://www.jimseven.com/2016/10/03/updated-french-press-video/ I follow this mostly. I preheat the kettle while i shower then it takes me a total of 8 minutes to brew once I start the proces, just long enough to scramble my eggs for breakfast. That makes it just as fast as sitting in line at a breakfast joint for me so it turns out to be a wash. 4 minutes to brew, quick stir and scoop, 2 more more minutes, press and pour. In other news I’m used to next day shipping from Bodka. Counter Culture still hasn’t shipped so it looks like I’m gonna run out of beans. Likely January 2. I’m mildly perturbed, mostly at myself.
Ball Gag Giorgio a.tramp you guys tried anything from Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters? Stopped in a local shop near my house yesterday that was featuring their Victor Prosper's and I really liked it. The bags they were selling yesterday were roasted on Wednesday. Drew63 's Coffee Collective recommendation is going to keep me fully stocked but I'm going to buy some of theirs every now and then anyway.
Hope you're liking the coffee collective stuff Was given a bag of Ethiopian beans from Methodical Coffee out of Greenville, SC and they are great. Coffee gifts are a great present
CC's Ethiopian beans this month were great. I'm a big fan. Not so much a fan of the Colombian. As I texted Jorts earlier I was quite underwhelmed.
Oak cliff roasts a bit dark for my tastes, but a lot of people like them. Cultivar is great for a local option.
Counter culture order arrived today. I’ve gone from fearing a coffeeless new year to figuring out how quickly I can deplete my stores to justify opening a bag. Smells fantastic. It’s like nudie magazine day for boring adults.
I got this coffee from bryix for Secret Santa. Roasted in Athens, GA, the beans are a 2:1 mixture of Brazilian to Guatemalan. I can’t taste the citrus or raisin because I’m not very sophisticated, but I can definitely taste the nuts . A very nice medium roast. Plus, the bag is compostable, so I feel particularly morally superior while drinking. Spoiler: Pic
Just picked up the new Cuisinart brewer that is SCAA certified. Drinking my first few cups this morning. Very impressed. I like it better than other SCAA brewers I've tried (Bonavita & OXO 9-cup).
Kalita Wave filters have not arrived from Amazon after 2 orders (first order, they were delayed and then cancelled...now in the delay period but expecting cancellation on second order). Any suggestions on where to order them from? Kind of frustrated at this point.
I'm gonna ask my office manager to get a replacement for the crappy ass brewer that we have right now. Thoughts on this Cuisinart vs. Bonavita? Budget's probably going to be about 150$
You can get this Cuisinart for like $160 using a 20% off coupon from BB&B, and is on Amazon for that price as well. I think it performs better than the bonavita, and the carafe keeps the coffee warm for a while. The bonavita costs around $120 on Amazon, and also makes good coffee but the maker is a but more cumbersome and a little messier. The big difference is that with Cuisinart the filter holder is attached to the maker itself while the Bonavita has the filter holder sit on top of the carafe. The means that the carafe lid has to sit on the counter while it is brewing, and either the lid or the filter holder has to sit somewhere during non-use. I think in office setting this could get annoying because people tend not to wipe up messes as they should. Both are SCAA certified so you know they brew some good joe, but I prefer the Cuisinart.
Four Barrel coffee in San Fran rebrands after sexual harassment allegations against their founder. Seems kind of odd their are trying to use ousting him as a marketing ploy.
bump reminds me that 4 barrel deleted all social media regarding the above and reverted back to 4 barrel. Seems like they are not going to survive.
Hmmm. Wasn't very familiar with aeropress, but looking it up you can make something resembling an espresso. Might be the better option than the stovetop if it's more versatile
Just brewed a batch of French Press of Tandem's La Ensenada that was roasted a couple of days ago. Lately, I've been sticking to some local roasters like George Howell & another subscription from a shop down the cape but this one reminds me why Tandem's one of my favorite roasters.
How do your grounds look in the filter after a pour over? I usually nut a little bit if they are evenly lining the filters walls with fewer grounds at the bottom. I don’t know if that’s right or best practice though.
To me exposing that fine a grind to hot water for more than 35-40 seconds seems like a bad idea to me. :shrugs: Also aero press cannot make espresso. Full stop. FYI, I don’t hate aeropress and have an able filter.
I push it through immediately with some weird technique but i just got it so I'm trying different things.
I have a behmor and a freshroast sr500, but I haven't been able to make anything even moderately good. What are you using, and how are your results?
I’m just using an air popper. Stuff I’ve made has turned out pretty well. I’ve only been at it for a month so nailing down the roasts has been guesswork, but I’ve been able to tease out the flavors in the descriptions of the beans I’ve bought. Still experimenting but the price and quality is better than anything I can get in my area.
If you're having luck with a popper, you might like the freshroast. It's pretty fun to use; I've just never gotten it right. I'm keeping my eyes open for a used genecafe.
At least for v60 a flat bed is desired. I do the Matt Perger “tap” after final pour. Google Matt Perfer v60 for the way he does it.
We're looking into buying a coffee farm in Panama now. Our manager's family owns 600 acres in Guatemala and it is producing some nice beans but we found a farm in Panama we love that is in the area that grows Gesha beans and its weirdly affordable.
My Baratza Virtuoso stopped working 2 weeks after the one year warranty expired. They are replacing it for free, but honestly, the only issue is the “safety” switch that stops you from using the grinder with the hopper removed. It’s because of a 25 cent part that is only necessary to prevent stupid people from stupiding. Were it not for their willingness to replace it for free this fix would cost me $60 for a grinder that hasn’t even moved from the spot where I put it a year ago and I never even change the courseness setting. Considering I use this once and day and not even every day I expected it to last longer. Maybe I just got unlucky.
That sucks. I think you got unlucky. Baratza has a great reputation for customer service so not a surprise they replaced it.
