Acoustic show last night in Huntingdon. I’ve been to two of his acoustic shows and I think I enjoy them more than the full shows.
Saw this in a record store earlier; I’ve gotta wonder if it influenced his decision on titling the album.
Best lines go “I was rougher than the timber shipping out of Fon du Lac when I headed south at 17, the sheriff on my back”
Daddy used to empty out his shotgun shells and fill em full of black eyed peas, he'd aim real low and tear out your ankles or rip right through your knees
I wouldn't even know where to start. Relatively Easy is my favorite isbell tune that really makes you think, some very haunting lines. I lost a good friend Christmas time when folks go off the deep end His woman took the kids and he took klonopin Enough to kill a man of twice his size Not for me to understand Remember him when he was still a proud man A vandals smile a baseball in his right hand Nothing but the blue sky in his eye
Close your eyes and remember this. It won't be back again, it's almost gone. Even times that don't seem like much will be your only crutch when you're alone. Time moves slow when you're seventeen and then it picks up steam at twenty-one. Pretty soon you'll remember when you could remember when you loved someone
And the church bells are ringing for those who are easy to please And the frost on the ground probably envies the frost on the trees.
I don’t think I could name one. I’d pick one then think of another and so on All those years you took from her just by being born Home was a dream one id never seen till you came along I've buried her a thousand times, given up my place in line But I don't give a damn about that now There's one thing that's real clear to me: No one dies with dignity But there ain't much difference in the man I wanna be and the man that I really am
Well it's a Thursday night but there's a high school game Sneak a bottle up the bleachers and forget my name These 5A bastards run a shallow cross It's a boy's last dream and a man's first loss
The A.C. hasn't worked in twenty years. Probably never made a single person cold, but I can't say the same for me. I've done it many times.
Damn near strangled by my appetite, Ybor City on a Friday night, couldn’t even stand upright Cause I got dead brothers in Lauderdale South, and I got dead brothers in East Tennessee. My daddy got shot right in front of his house, he had no one to fall on but me
Any compilation of best lyrics starts with this for me: I got green and I got blues And every day there’s a little less difference between the two
On a lark On a whim I said there's two kinds of men in this world and you're neither of them And his fist Cut the smoke I had an eighth of a second to wonder if he got the joke And in the car Headed home She asked if I had considered the prospect of living alone With a steak Held to my eye I had to summon the confidence needed to hear her goodbye And another brief chapter without any answers blew by
Every word of If We We’re Vampires is flooring but these two couplets stand out The fragile heart you protected for so long Or the mercy in your sense of right and wrong Laugh at all the lovers and their plans I wouldn’t feel the need to hold your hand
They don't fuck up the grammy's that go out before the main event on tv... after that, it's all ratings and popularity.

Had to take a last minute trip up to Ithaca, NY this week for work. Kinda bummed b/c it's cold as shit, I'm by myself, etc. Looking for stuff to do at night, and BOOM, Isbell is playing the State Theater in Ithaca tonight a mile from my hotel. $32 later and I'm Row A Center Balcony for the show tonight. #blessed
Love this chorus from Sunstroke. Here it is morning for some folks And twilight for those of us left Who sleep while the soldiers get sunstroke And make little fools of ourselves
Do you remember what time McMurty and/or Isbell went on? Tix says show at 8, were they pretty close to that?

Isbell last night at Altria Theatre in Richmond. Great show. Was pumped to hear mostly new stuff as I missed his last couple tours. Hope the high road Anxiety 24 frames Something more than free White man’s world Decoration day (solos by Isbell and shires on this were awesome) Codeine Molotov Cumberland Gap Tupelo Last of my kind (whole band jam session) Something to love Stockholm Flying over water Cover me up If it takes a lifetime Super 8 Never gonna change If we were vampires Isbell’s voice may be in the best shape of his career. He’s hitting and holding great notes. Quitting smoking has paid huge dividends. I’m not a guitar expert by any means but would love to hear from those that are re: Isbell’s skill. He destroys solos and I’m loving the new Flying V shires just got him. James McMurtry is amazing. His songwriting is impeccable and he deserves more love itt. I hope he comes out with a new album soon.
I was talking to someone last night at the Truckers show that it was funny, the only band more locked in and playing consistently great shows than DBT seemingly is Jason and the Unit right now, ironically enough.
for someone who enjoyed TNS, that looked like an awesome set list. Wife and I are moving to Denver in a few weeks. Really hoping to catch him at Red Rocks on Labor Day night.
Round 2 for me this week. Had an absolute blast. Cover Me Up was a highlight. I was chatting with a guy in the beer line before the show who told me that Isbell “decided to get sober” after a particularly drunken night in Richmond—not sure how accurate that is. But he told me to keep an eye out for it. The tall boy Heinekens were flowing
True on the Richmond thing. NCD: Do you remember the last drink you had? JI: “Yeah, it was moonshine. Well, I remember the last jug of moonshine that I had. I don’t remember what the bottom of it looked like, but I remember what the top of it looked like. We were in Virginia, so it was that stuff from like south of Richmond that’s really, really good—it’s been really good for the last 75 years. That was the last thing that I drank. It didn’t treat me well. I knew that I’d be going into rehab on Monday, so on Saturday night I tried to see how much I could get down and it was a bad experience for sure.”

Before they played Runaway Train last night, Patterson said they’ll be officially releasing the old Adam’s House Cat album this year, Town Burned Down. They spent some of their time in Athens this week mixing/remastering the old tracks from back then so they can put it out.
