Wrapped this up. Found it rough through the first episode or so but really fell for it before the end of 2. Performances. Shaloub and Hinkle are great. Pollack too. Bornstein is fantastic.
Just finished this. I’m in love with Midge. Really interested to see how Season 2 goes. The back story with Joel and his father really made me feel for him. He’s such an asshole it’s impressive how they were able to write him to be so pathetic that you actually feel sorry for him. Does anyone else thing this would do great as a play? The whole thing seems like it might have originally been written that way.
Watched episode 1 today on a recommendation and really liked it. Will watch the rest of season 1. I agree that Rachel is a national treasure and her tits are marvelous. Spoiler
this is a good point, and i hadn't really thought about it that much. they really did a good job with Joel.
Agreed. A little self indulgent now. The Paris trip was an eye roller (though I loved Abe in that role). And Midge needs to stop being good at every-fucking-thing. Big time Mary Sue character.
Ah, I'm only through 3 right now. I actually think a lot of the story lines are better for the secondary characters this season (Joel and his dad, Abe and Rose) but I've found Midge to be too much of a caricature this season, even in a show where part of the appeal is the over-dramatics.
I continue to enjoy the show, but I thought this piece was very much on point https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/12/24/the-cloying-fantasia-of-the-marvelous-mrs-maisel
Had a few people recommend it and glad I took a chance on it. On S2 and has greatly exceeded my expectations.
finally got around to starting this and went through season 1 over the last week. enjoyed it a lot; it's really well-acted.
The cultural references in this show are amazing... at the Paris nightclub the New Yorker tells Midge she should see this psychiatrist that really helped her friend Sylvia Plath.... amazing
Just finished watching over the last month or so. End of Season 3 had me a little confused/disappointed. Spoiler How would Midge be so blind to the sensitivity of the situation? Seems like given how close they were getting, him opening up to her, taking the hiatus, etc, there wasn't a blind spot to be had. Just seemed like a strange take.
I enjoyed the season a lot. Bornstein continues to own the fuck out of her role, which is the real key for me. I liked watching Moishe torture Midge's parents... in fact I liked the whole idea of them losing their lifestyle (sorta). Mei was a really compelling character add - an excellent foil for Joel (whose club pursuit I think is entertaining in its own right). It's true that it was stupid for Midge not to get that she couldn't be "real" about Shy in front of an audience - but it actually makes sense in the context of her character, who in spite of being largely honorable is outrageously self-centered, much like her parents. I also appreciated that the writers allowed for that flirtation with Bruce without it being cliche and boring. Last note - Imogene
You nailed the underlying message re: Midge. Deep down, she really isn’t a great person and does some awful stuff.
That final episode with Rachel in her unders too. Funny season - not much move forward but still funny as hell
Damn. I just realized that episode 8 was the last of this season. The last scene with Midge and Lenny was great stuff, good scene to head into the last season I guess. Even “down” seasons of this show are very enjoyable imo. I could watch Moishe do damn near anything and would probably laugh a couple times.
Nobody???? Mostly not a fan of the "future" choice, but... I'm still entertained. Alex needs a supporting award of some kind.
Glad this thread was bumped. Roast episode was great. I don't mind the flash forwards. There was no way they were gonna be able to show Midge and Susie's successes any other way with the limited time they had. Pollock and Shaloub have been great this season, not that that is a big shocker.
Not exactly how I envisioned Maisel getting on Fords show but I still predict the show ends with her walking on stage
Didn’t love the final season but that was a fantastic finale. Rachel as Midge is one of my favorite characters of all time. Sad to see this one go and really don’t want a Suzy spinoff like some people are hoping for.
