I’d much rather give at bats to a guy like Gerber. And not taking a flyer on a guy like Tucker is inexcusable.
I have a much bigger issue with signing Martin and playing him every day over taking a shot at someone like Tucker or playing Gerber a lot more than keeping Reyes. Or keeping Iglesias and paying him millions when he has no trade value over some younger guys with more potential. Reyes never played above AA and has barely played so far. At least there's a chance he might be something.
Most underrated prospect in our system, IMO. Dealt with a bunch of injuries for a couple years that slowed his development. Wouldn't be shocked if he's a decent back end starter down the road.
Yeah those are all bad too. Reyes had a .731 OPS in AA. He’s not going to improve here getting 5 at bats a week. Paying Iglesias $6MM this year may be one of worst moves of offseason.
Reyes hit around .300 with an above average wRC+ (107 and 110) in A and AA the last two years. He just doesn't have any power right now. That's someone worth taking a shot on, IMO. You need to give him ABs to develop, though. I don't understand the plan with him right now. Iglesias is just burning money. He's not really holding someone back right now, but he will in the second half of the season if they don't dump him. This just isn't a smart org when it comes to the financial stuff and understanding value.
I actually had to look this up to see if it was in the minors somewhere. It was against the Cubs. Amazing. Is somebody injured in their rotation?
Casey Mize tonight v. Mississippi State: CG, 1 R, 5 H, 9 K, 0 BB For the season: 9 starts, 2.00 ERA, 63 IP, 37 H, 86 K, 4 BB
Meh. This guy really wouldn't be number 1 pick in most years. His numbers are not far off from Faedo from last year. Figures the year we get number 1 pick, there really isn't a standout player.
Scouting for the draft is about more than numbers. Faedo's numbers were extremely good last year, and if Mize keeps this up he'll better Faedo in pretty much every statistical category in what some think is a historically deep SEC. Mize's stuff is also on a different level according to just about everyone. His numbers are much better than Kyle Wright, who was the consensus top college arm (some believe top overall player) last year, but I'm not sure the stuff is better. Mize's only question is health, which is part of the reason why I'm not sure I want him #1 if there's a position guy we also love and can get a discount.
I like to think he learned it from Phil Coke. I also don't care how much he points if this start to the season is real for him.
Everyone on the team sucking isn't going to help us very much. We would gain more in terms of trade value from guys playing well than sucking and maybe picking 1 or 2 spots higher in the draft.
Fangraphs updated their rankings. These are drastically different from the start of the year. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/updated-2018-mlb-draft-rankings/
Only issue I can see with our tank job is that there are still other MLB teams out there that are clearly worse. Two in our division even. Texas looks really bad, Orioles might be too ...
This is troublesome, although I read Manning was 96+ in a spring start on the back fields. He's also back with WM and should be making his season debut soon after an injury at the end of spring. Faedo has been around 89-91 for most of his three starts, according to reports I've seen.
I actually hope we go hitter rd 1 below slot, and draft high school pitcher rd 2 that fell. Give me Bohm or Madrigal.
I'm not against that, but the number of teams with multiple picks in the comp round are going to make that strategy tougher. A team like KC with 4 picks in the top 40 or so could go over slot for 2-3 players in that range. Same with TB and some others. I don't think Madrigal is really an option for us. Just doesn't fit our profile. If we pass on Mize (who got roughed up a bit by Florida last night after taking a ball off his right forearm), I think Kelenic will be the pick.
Curious why you think he doesn’t fit our profile. He’s got future .300 hitter written all over him. And could potentially start for us by next July, I like Kelenic too. We need some OF prospects in our system, or any type of positional prospect for that matter. All we have are Paredes, who probably won’t stick at SS, Cameron, and Rogers. And Mize did fine yesterday, had one bad inning. Didn’t he play Oklahoma though? We have enough starting pitching prospects, where there is a decent chance two of the 4 arms eventually make it to the show in 2-3 years.
Yeah, I was wrong about Mize's opponent. They played Bama. I can't remember the last time the Tigers took a middle infielder in the first 2-3 rounds in the draft, and I especially can't remember a time the Tigers someone with a profile like Madrigal who likely has little/no power. That doesn't mean they won't take him because sometimes philosophies can change, but it would shock just about everyone if they took him.
Fair enough. I think Madrigal can be a 10-15 homer guy at the next level, and a solid #2 hitter. He doesn’t strike out either. He’s pretty much the only sure thing in this draft. Bohm can rake, but where is he going to play? Left Field? Doesn’t sound like he can stick in the infield.
So are we better than what we thought, or is it just a matter of us beating up on bad teams. I don’t think our pitching will hold up. Fiers and Zimmermann still suck. Liriano has been pretty lucky. Maybe we can win 75 games now? That’s probaably still good for a top 10 pick.
The Tigers historically have sucked at drafting players who can hit because they don't value players like Madrigal. I think he can probably hit 10-15 HR, but in today's game that's not much power. It's weird, though, because almost all the middle infielders we sign from Latin America have a ceiling that matches Madrigal's profile. I don't get it, but there seems to be a disconnect between what we value in Latin America and what we value in the draft. Both Law and Kiley McDaniel have written that they think Bohm will stick at 3B, but he's massive so it's probable that he'll have to move to 1B down the road. Question is likely whether that move comes at age 28 or 32.
We're not winning 75 games. We're beating up on some terrible teams right now. I doubt we're going to keep beating the bad teams at this rate, and we're not going to do much better against the good teams. I think 70 wins is probably the ceiling with this group, especially if we end up trading any of our better players in July.
Trading our better players? Who is left to trade? A .250 hitting SS? Cabrera for 28 mil/year? VMart-Ha-Ha? Zimmerman or Mccann for a bag of peanuts?
Greene sure, but my ultimate hope would be deadline flips of Liriano, Martin or Fiers ... Edit: and Vmart, that would be delightful
I don't think it's going to matter whether we flip those three or not because we won't get much in return. There are a bunch of guys I'm sure they would love to move.
Fiers may be worst signing of off season. Liriano is better and we got him for like $5 mil less And to think Avila was interested in signing Tillman too
Tillman would have helped us getting a better draft pick so Avila should be fired nonetheless for that miss.
Lakeland started early this morning after a rain out yesterday. This kind of velo would be a very welcome site after the reports where he was sitting 88-90 over the last few months.
I heard he topped out at 92. Still an Improvement He should probably move up to AA now, he needs to get tested
