Heading down for my bachelor party next weekend 4/12-15. Been to New Orleans about 5-6 time, but it's been about 5 years since I've gone. I've read through this thread, but any updated food and bar recommendations would be appreciated. I'd imagine we'll gamble some at Harrahs and probably go out on Frenchmen. Thanks in advance.
Any recommendations on record stores? Never been, headed there for 10 days for work in mid-May, real excited, have done a ton of research. Looking for a record store I can kill an hour or two in perusing or buying stuff after a cocktail or two.
Saint Joes bar is right down the street from Peaches Records. Highly recommend checking it out if you can.
Euclid, Peaches, Louisiana Music Factory, Basin Street Records. Euclid is the best. At Peaches, expect to pay 5-20% more than for what the record goes for online.
Yeah, I'm taking off work all of next week so I should be getting a lot done this week. Not happening.
Thanks for the suggestions e-bros. My in-laws are there this week and have hit up Mothers, Palace Cafe, and Deanies. They’re going to try and make it to Cochon for lunch today.
Non jazz fest it's a dope intimate venue. During jazz fest it's a overcrowded sweat box. Good shows there tho for sure. St. Paul tonight and maybe California honey drops. Karl Denson guest list tomorrow ::humblebrag::
Lol, to be honest I would set up at the Gentilly stage vs the Acura. Acura has the bigger headlines, but it's a cluster fuck to get a drink, piss, or move unlike Gentilly.
Back to reality. Took the week off work and caught some great music last week. Highlights include JRAD, Frequinox with Donald Harrison, Eddie Roberts doing Green is Beautiful (a tribute to Grant Green), and Daze Between Band on Wednesday. David Byrne was also very cool. Irma Thomas yesterday was akin to church. Also saw Medeski's Mad Skillet, Neon Medeski, New Mastersounds, Trey Anastasio, and California Honeydrops. Before last week, never would have guessed Frequinox would have been one of the best shows I saw but it was awesome. My only regret is not going on a solo mission Friday night and ditching my friends to wait in line to pay $60 to get into Maison for Worship My Organ. Really mad at myself for missing that one, especially after seeing how well Marco played with JRAD on Saturday. Overall, a successful first Jazz Fest as a New Orleans resident.
Most of my friends live in Uptown, I live in Uptown, and I work in the LGD. I enjoy Uptown, but as a new resident I'm thinking of moving to the Warehouse District to slightly expand the bubble of NOLA I see every day. Mid-city would be more of a commute to work than I'd prefer, or I'd consider moving there as well.
Personally I won't live more uptown than napoleon lakeside of st Charles. Mid city is nice. Lgd is my favorite place I've lived so far. This year I'm on bienville and royal in the quarter. I won't do that again mostly because my gf lives in the low 9 and can't bike to her because I don't wanna cross the canal on my bike. Makes getting back to my house a pain because of parking.
Yeah, I live around Napoleon and St. Charles now and I don't think I'd move any closer to the park. I went apartment hunting in the quarter with a friend a few weeks ago. Would love to live in the quarter for a year, but the thought of dealing with the pedestrians and traffic every single day going to/from work is enough to dissuade me. Figure it'd be pretty interesting to live above a Voodoo shop for a bit...
Id rather live much closer to the park (west of Napoleon) - if Im considering my family. It would also make me a multi-millionaire, which would be kind of nice.
Yeah I totally agree. My buddy who I encouraged to live in the FQ and who signed a lease is a music tour manager. He tours via airplane, so when he's in town he only needs an Uber to get to/from airport. He's decided to not keep his car in NOLA. While that may be inconvenient for him at times, on balance if I were in his situation I'd 100% do the same thing.
I used to live in the Quarter for 2 weeks a year during Mardi Gras. We had a balcony at the Royal Sonesta and each of the 3 rooms that opened up to it. The middle room was cleared out for a party room and then my boss and I had a room on each side. I was 21 years old so it was great then but now.... fuck that. That just sounds miserable. But man back then it was fun. Party until 5am, sleep for 3 hours, get up and check a few accounts while the streets were clear, crash back at room and get up at like 3pm to do it all over again. Now I need 3 days to recover.
I live near the zoo uptown, and I would love to move to mid city. My rent is ridiculous and some of my friends have moved, or in the process of moving to the mid city area and loving it. I don't seem them nearly as much during the week, but on weekends it's fun to head down there and check new places. I'm getting tired of going out to Saint Joe's, Cooters, Madigans, and others near by each weekend.
Oh yeah. I work with someone who lives in the quarter, and as of two years ago when his car broke down, he decided not to get it repaired. So he stays in the quarter and Uber’s to work.
Oh totally. Back then we could manage the next days solely off energy fumes of our young self. Now those fumes have flamed out and the pain lasts for days.
You live near me. I live near the kingpin so I’m always there. And my rent is decent considering the location, but I’ve always been against moving to mid city because of how susceptible the area is to flooding.
It was as of 13 hours ago. Quite the mistake I made last night. More importantly, you live near Creole Creamery
Still got the picnic tables in the back? It's been almost 20 years since I moved there. There used to be a place at the top of Canal that had the biggest party the night before Halloween. Can't remember the name of it. You go up Canal until you hit the cemetery and hang a right and it's a little bit down on the right. Had a big wooden fence around it. Big place.Bag of Doughnuts used to play there just about every year for it. Speaking of them, are they still a thing? They used to be huge over there.
Hey will. Thought you moved. Or got married. Or? I'm still here. Hit me up fuckboy. Didn't realize there were this many locals itt. Meet up maybe this month?
Yep, still here for the meantime, and I didn't know you were back. Let's catch up Friday if you can to discuss the above.
