Wached the other day, follows some American border/militia kooks as well the escalating war between civilian Autodefensas and the Knights Templar cartel in Michoacan. It's alright, not worthy of the 90% on Rotten Tomatoes though.

I liked this one a lot better. It's on Netflix. Focuses on narcocorrido culture and a crime scene investigator in Jaurez.

2 of my favorite organized crime books. Both are read alone, but it is the same story. It's fictional, but it's awesome.

    1. Power of the Dog
    2. The Cartel

Both are by Don Winslow. You're welcome.

In comparison to the other crime organizations I have read about, they seem to be more ruthless for sure, jail time is not a concern, more like a badge of honor. But is the network, they are everywhere, especially in Europe, and seem to have their hands in everything. Their top guys are protected better, through their owning Russia pretty much, and the corruption is easier for influence. I doubt anything is built in Russia, of size, that isn't Mob controlled. The dollar figures they were throwing around in the books i have read are insane. They run the traditional Mafia rackets, but have made zillions off of selling Russian goods/weapons through the black market, and are into cyber crime bigtime.

He basically turned-coat on the Rizzutos in Quebec aka the 6th Fifth Family. The Rizzutos basically got lazy being on the top for so long, a bunch of them got killed off 2-3 years ago. Vito Rizzuto was in jail in the US serving time for a murder from the 70s, its actually a scene in Donnie Brasco where they wait in a basement of a house for them to come home and kill 4-5 guys. Anyways, Vito got out of jail and started cleaning up all the mess. His son, Vito Jr. and father Nicola the patriarch of the family were murdered while he was behind bars.

You mean Sal "The Iron Worker" Montagna, I had never heard of "Magnatora".

Montagna was actually the Bonnano's acting boss before he was deported to Canada. He was killed by Rizzuto lieutenant Raynald Desjardins (just pled guilty to conspiracy to commit murder a couple months ago) and others in a setup for attempting to fill the power vacuum in Quebec.

It's unclear if Montagna was behind Nicolo Rizzuto's death, there was a lot of subversive and traitorous shit going on in that family while Vito was locked up. Vito was still in prison when Montagna was hit.

Although it appears Desjardins was being a dutiful soldier to the Rizzuto's, he may have been just clearing out competition for his own attempted take over of Quebec as many of his associates and even his brother in law were whacked in Vito's revenge purge upon being released from prison.

It's really hard to follow what happened/is happening up there. It is pretty interesting how the wars, murders, openess of their activities are reminiscent of the American mob glory days. There are virtually no mob murders/hits in the US these days, but Canada leaves bodies all the time.

They were going to ambush Montagna in a house, he sensed a set-up, bolted out of there being chased by multiple gunmen and jumped in a river trying to escape his killers.

This is him right after being pulled out of the river.

The Sixth Family is a great book, but ends well before the recent drama unfolded. If someone ever gets the story straight about recent activities it'd make for an excellent book in itself.

The murder rate was out of control in those years. 1987 was the only year Michigan led the country in murder rate (1,124 murders that year - 2nd to 1,186 in
'74). The nightly news usually led with the two or three murders that day plus other non-fatal shootings, and the attention police had to pay to all the murders may have given drug dealers have more freedom to grow quickly. For perspective, there are now 530-700 murders per year in recent years in Michigan.

It was an incredibly depressing place to grow up. I left for good in the late 80's.

More Detroit true crime that is still reverberating in South Africa of all places.

Mark McPhee was a classmate of mine and our group of friends did a lot of drugs together. Mark was a great guy, and a brilliant chemist even in high school. Fortunately, I passed on going to Univ. of Michigan with him. It was a hazy time, but I believe I met Pavlik a few times. I never had anything to do with this drug though, and I lost contact with McPhee after graduation (I left Michigan for good). This drug might still be causing more problems in the US if Methamphetamine hadn't filled it's role with it's relatively more manageable side effects.

From Vice this year, the drug referenced in the prior article is still causing problems.

Someone asked about mafia in Detroit. Google the "Purple Gang". It pales in comparison to Chicago, NY, etc. though.

Have we talked about Roy DeMeo and "Shitty AMC Show Machine" wing of the Gambino Family?

It's one of the more interesting and ruthless tales in Italian Mafia lore, IMO. He and his crew were sadistic and ritualistic about their killings... I'll have to find a documentary, but I just watched the Mafia: Greatest Hits episode on that crew and it's great...

Them taking a break from preparing a body in order to eat a pizza is one of my favorite things ever.

John Gotti's brother Gene was picked up on wiretaps saying John was scared of Demeo because he was such a prolific killer. They finally had to get some of Demeo's own crew to kill him once it was clear he was fucked. One of his operations involved underage porn, extremely fucked up especially since he had 2 daughters.

Sometimes I'll find myself in a mafia Wikipedia hole and it's hugely confusing because everyone's name is interchangeable. It'll be something like "That's when Nicholas Anthony Carolla setup the murder of underboss Anthony Nicholas Carulo, but Carulo was tipped to Carolla's plan by fellow capo Tony "The Nick" Carlucci."

Finished this the other day, great stuff. The relationship between the different mobs and the church always crack me up. It was a great part in the sopranos and seeing one of these mobsters sit with a priest and being praised by him after he gave 600 000$ to the church was pretty hilarious.

No, he was in on it. But they were all idiots. He did od but it had probably nothing to do with the case. They were all so dysfunctional

Evil genius is a terrible name, these idiots managed to either die in prison, die within 3 years of the « bank robbery » and they never got one penny from it. If you watched the doc, you know that nothing about them was even close to being smart
