Wife dies. Husband charged. Not entirely sure why, but cameras document the whole process for the husband. As in-depth as you can get from a defendant prospective.

I did. Incredible. I posted it in another thread too. I think the hipster adopted daughter believes he did it, but doesn't want her world to come crashing. Where as the other daughter is 70-30 on him not doing it. Imagine the situation they are in considering their birth mom? wow.

Gambling, loansharking, video poker, etc. The guy presumed to be the boss (Joey Merlino) pled guilty to healthcare fraud recently and is awaiting sentencing in the fall I think. In the past few years guys who'd gotten locked up in the 80s began coming home from prison, numbers wise it's as big now as it's been since the Scarfo heyday.

After reading Blood Will Tell and watching 10 episodes of The Staircase, it’s pretty obvious that blood spatter analysis is largely bullshit.

Yep. It can indicate certain aspects of a scene. Obviously a blood trail shows where someone walked etc, but they were attempting to put exact origins of impact based off splatter. Not to mention saying that he only got blood inside his shorts because he was hitting her is silly. He was all over her body, innocent or guilty. I once read an article where they re-created a crime scene for some tech type people to come in and evaluate. The re-creations were based off real crimes where video footage was available, so it was a controlled experiment. It was known where the fight started, where shot was fired from, etc. The techs did horrible.

    re: falling from a staircase

As someone who was found at the bottom of the stairs- here is my take.

submitted 1 day ago by Misszoolander

I came across this series with my best friend. We literally binge watched it, and discussed it in-depth due to my own experience of being found at the bottom of the stairs, except I survived.

This happened 6 years ago when I was 21. I was drinking with my now ex boyfriend. I wasn’t just drinking, but to be blunt I was getting high as fuck on weed too. We were at his Mum and stepdads place and they were overseas, so we took advantage of their hot tub and drunk about 4 bottles of wine between us from around 3pm to 10pm. We weren’t in the hot tub the whole time, sometimes we were just sitting next to it, talking, smoking and getting high.

Anyways as we finished up my boyfriend decided to get us some food. It was about a 20 minute walk, he also wanted to drop in at his friends and pick up his hockey gear on the way. I stayed at home and decided to get changed so went upstairs. Coming back downstairs I literally tripped, the staircase was wooden, with bars connecting each step. I can’t remember anything after that.

I woke up in hospital to a distressed boyfriend. My family travelled later to see me.

Apparently the fall caused multiple lacerations, because of the drinking I bled ALOT. Also dehydration from the spa and drinking didn’t help. I had a concussion, so if I wasn’t found shortly I probably would have died.

I helped my ex clean up the stairwell before his parent came back home, and it literally looked like a crime scene. Plus my blood was scattered throughout the house as my ex had my blood all over him when he found me and he walked throughout the house after finding me. Possibly to find his iPhone. I too had weird markings on my face and body, and my hand was broken. It was concluded that when I fell, my clothes and the wall (which was textured) rubbed against my face causing rubbing marks on my face. The broken hand is from my knee jerk reaction to gain sudden balance vs gravity to the fall.

Also interestingly my ex also hanged up on the 911 operator. This is because his hands were bloody and he was using an iPhone, the iPhone slipped out of his hands and when he picked it up he accidentally pressed on the onscreen hang up button.

Not saying Mr Peterson is innocent, but I can relate to how messy and bloody the event would be if she simply fell down the stairs. Thank God my ex found me, who knows it could’ve been him on trail.

I haven’t found any reason to believe they think he’s guilty. No way in hell it hasn’t crossed their minds more times than they can count, but I don’t think they would still be showing up from all over the country and supporting him after all these years if they thought he was guilty. I will say that their whiteness is cringeworthy, but that goes for pretty much the whole family. They kinda seem like Jehovah’s witnesses who just so happen to be cool with cussing. Only exception is Kathleen’s biological daughter. She seems as cold as her aunts. Not sure if that answers your question?

Hipster girl always gets in a positive comment about Dad and then say “but...” almost like she has more to say. In an earlier episode, both daughters and a friend are sitting together at the house. Hipster daughter says “but both cases are so similar with all the blood.” She then later says something about going into a depression if it was true. Her staring at him at the cemetery was a tad off. Plus a few other scenes, I think she portrayed to the camera (in a subtle way) that she is unsure.

I was more asking if you picked up on her specific actions. I didn't see that conduct from any other family member (including the ex wife). Not to say they weren't unsure, just talking about the fronts they put on in front of the camera. I'd love to see an interview with hipster daughter after he is dead lol.

The judge all but admits it wasn’t a fair trial first time around. It’s a crying shame that Michael Peterson had 15 years of his life taken from him and is financially ruined with a criminal record so the Durham County DA’s office could save face after wrongfully accusing an innocent person. I'm distinguishing between the justice system and actual reality, hence why I wrote "burden of proof not met." He killed someone, had an unlawful trial, and then did 8 years. I think of a "crying shame" as someone truly, morally innocent getting convicted. Not a guilty party getting an unfair trial. But as I'm typing this, I guess fair is fair. He didn't deserve the conviction, so even 1 day is a shame.

If he confesses tomorrow, are you still viewing the 8 years as a crying shame or did he get off easy?

I’m not sure where you’re getting “a crying shame” from since I have not used that language. I’m also unsure why you’re certain of his guilt. For the record, I’m uncertain of his innocence. But I have a hard time believing that the man could murder his wife with blood being confined only to the stairwell, no murder weapon, no motive, and the absence of any head injuries other than lacerations.

I'm getting it from the reason for my post and what I was replying to, which is where your jim harden comment came from...
I checked out the case and came to that conclusion. The similar fact/williams rule evidence is damning for me. Especially if it's true that he benefited financially big time from the deaths of both women. I'll admit - it's a close call. Going with my gut in these posts.

First, Gus doesn’t speak for me. Secondly, I don’t think 404(b) applies. Judge Hudson even says that in the final episode. You can rule out motive and intent because in Germany he stood to gain very little from $70k to raise two daughters as well as with Peterson because he seemed to be independently wealthy by then. Opportunity/knowledge is tenuous at best and more coincidental imo. I think the only reason it ended up being admissible was because of the MEs report, and I lost all faith in anyone in Durham from the series.

If he confesses tomorrow, I’m not sure how I would feel about it. The absence of a clear motive gives me pause. He was absolutely deprived of due process, but I think eight years served (plus three on house arrest) would be acceptable were it a crime of passion. And once again, I didn’t say it was a crying shame.

some shit taken from other sites...

    • Kathleen Peterson worked for a dot com bubble-affected company that was figuratively burning down ($398b to $5b in 2 yrs). Almost all workers had been laid off and she confided in a friend that she worried she would soon follow.

    • There was a $1.4 million life insurance policy on Kathleen, which was split between Michael and the daughter.
    • She was also the owner of the home, which Michael got, and the car and had $350k in pension funds and her 401(K)
    • It was said that their (her, actually) net worth was around $2M

    • Michael's sons were all heavily in debt. His sons were not even close to being able to afford to pay the interest on their loans - much less reduce the principal
    • Michael suggested to his sons' mother Patty, whose net worth presumably wasn't 10% of Kathleen's, that she should take out a $30 000 home equity loan to help the boys out

    • Michael had no income and had not had any income to speak of for a long time.
    • "[Dr. Radisch] moved her examination to the internal neck area, and discovered a bloodied fracture with hemorrhage on the small extension off of the left thyroid cartilage. It was an injury unlikely to occur in a fall. Usually it was the result of direct trauma to the bone and was common in strangulation or attempted strangulation." - Written in Blood by D. Fanning
    • There was a bloody shoeprint on the backside of Kathleen's leg matched to the sneakers owned by Michael which were found next to the body

    • There was a drop of blood on the inseam of Michael's shorts

    • There was blood on the inside of the front door and a drop of blood was found on the porch

    • There were only trace amounts of blood in Kathleen's lungs suggesting she might not have coughed up 10 000 drops of blood

    • Her arms and hands had contusions (bruises) and cartilage in the front of her neck was fractured

    • Despite the colossal injuries to her head and neck area and contusions all over her arms she had zero injury to her knees and legs

    • Analysis of her brain revealed the presence of red neurons that suggest she had been alive for 45-120 minutes after her blood loss began - a neuropathologist testified that in his experience 120 minutes was the minimum she was alive for after her initial blood loss

    • The two paramedics who responded to the call arrived ten minutes after his initial call and both noted that the blood was very dry when they arrived

    • In the week leading up to the death he deleted a ton of files from his computer and after that installed a program designed to make deleting files easier.

There are reasonable explanations to most of your bullet points and several of them don’t lead to a motive for murder, imo. I still don’t think he did it. To answer your question, if he did do it, yes he got off easy

Lol never said you said it. I've already clarified that for you, guy. As a bird law expert, I can't believe you haven't mentioned the owl theory..
You've been hearing about the Michael Peterson murder trial depicted in the Netflix documentary series "The Staircase" for ages, and people are always talking about "the owl." The owl did it!" they yell. You're intrigued. You settle down to watch the series — all 13 episodes — and ... no owl! (Attorney David Rudolf said the word "raptor" one time in passing in the final episode.

The evidentiary issues were interesting. Without giving it too much thought, he could have garnered knowledge/preparation from the Germany incident. I know of a case where a previous robbery victim/witness (CVS), essentially committed the same robbery years later at CVS - that was admissible. Problem I have with the Germany incident is that they didn't raise it to show knowledge. Issues with a marriage are relevant when the husband is being accused of murdering the wife. The defense said they had a great marriage, State wanted to disprove that. IMO evidence of him calling for a female escort would not be considered too prejudicial, of course him being gay is what complicates it. Is evidence of him trying to cheat with a man substantially outweighed by prejudice? I suppose in Durham. Appellate court didn't agree though.

This is also funny (gus_chiggins )...
The 2017 NBC sitcom "Trial and Error," which was inspired by "The Staircase" documentary, incorporated lots of owls into the spoofy take on the true-crime documentary genre.
