Either quickly prosecute them for a misdemeanor (which crossing the border is considered) and deport them, or do not separate them from their families, especially those under the age of 18.

dome foam On NPR yesterday, they were interviewing some Border Patrol Union guy. He was saying that while the policy is now to prosecute 100% of illegal border crossing cases, they were not even close to matching that. iirc, like 10% or something. My solution is to pour more resources 1) into speeding up the process for those that cross illegally, but to spend even more on 2) asylum proceedings. It is a tough process that requires serious verification. It is 2018 and borders themselves are becoming less sensible to me over time, but if they must persist, streamline the process to decide what to do with those seeking access to our country. If the ports of entry weren't all fucked up and closed, families seeking asylum would not be forced to make the hard choice to a) run out of time/money/food/shelter just south of the border or b) cross illegally and turn themselves in to Border Patrol agents.

The split in opinion here is because the policy to separate children from their parents (those committing the misdemeanor crime of illegal border crossing) has turned innocent children (read: not criminals) into pawns that Trump wants to cash in for a border wall. They are political chips. They have turned into political prisoners. If the policy is reversed, that children remain with their parents, they are now just back to detained immigrants awaiting administrative court and/or deportation. Until then, concentration camps.
they are closing the centers for asylum and making these people stay out in the hot fucking sun, more than likely without food nor water, for days on end until they finally either give up, or try sneaking across the border. that's when they are being detained and separated from their kids.
Honestly there are probably a portion of them that are just trying to cross illegally. So long as we care about borders, they are causing a problem by not going through the proper channels. But yeah, the rest is spot on.
