    7. Columbine (Dave Cullen) - 8/10
    8. Freakonomics: A Rouge Economist Explores The Hidden Side Of Everything (Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner) - 7/10
    9. Animal Farm (George Orwell) - 8/10
    10. Lincoln In The Bardo (George Saunders) - 8.5/10
    11. Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir Of A Family And Culture In Crisis (J.D. Vance) - 5/10
    12. Everybody Lies: Big Data, New Data, and What the Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are (Seth Stephens-Davidowitz) - 8/10
    13. Lonesome Dove (Larry McMurtry) - 9/10
    14. Sapiens: A Brief History Of Humankind (Yuval Noah Harari) - 9/10
    15. Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI (David Grann) - 8.5/10
    16. Ready Player One (Ernest Cline) - 6.5/10
    17. Thinking, Fast and Slow (Daniel Kahneman) - 9.5

    18. American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America (Colin Woodard) - 9/10 - Been a popular book on TMB and I can see why. Fun and easy read. No original scholarship from Woodard but a work of synergy like this requires great skill and I think Woodard comes really close to nailing it. I could have read more on the First Nation and it's people (that short section felt like a throw-in) and I think some of the historical events mentioned could have benefited from further examination (Revolutionary War debt assumption, for example) but overall, a really nice book.
    19. All The Light We Cannot See (Anthony Doerr) - (8.5/10) - Beautiful prose from Doerr in this one. He's really talented with similes/metaphors and scene setting especially. It jumps around in time but as a reader, I was able to acclimate to the style quickly. I found the short meeting between Werner and Marie-Laure a bit underwhelming, perhaps because it felt like the whole book was building towards it. I don't have a lot of criticism, though; this one is worth your time.

I'd say it would be similar to the Sanderson books. He's not quite on Sanderson's level in writing ability though, but pretty good.

The last book in the series comes out next year though.

    15. Red Blood, Black Sand: Fighting Alongside John Basilone from Boot Camp to Iwo Jima by Chuck Tatum 8.5/10

    16. Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2) by Suzanne Collins 8/10 Went into this with lower expectation than the first book in the series but was pleasantly surprised. Will have to finish the series this year now instead of putting it off for longer.

    17. George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring that Saved the American Revolution by Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger 7/10 This book was interesting but the historical contents of it is not great, though an interesting read I would have enjoyed it more if the history was sound and there wasn't as much conjecture in the book.

Here was my thought process when considering whether to add this book to my TBR:

*Reads about a book called George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring that Saved the American Revolution*

"Sounds pretty interesting, I bet I would like that"

    *Written by Brian Kilmeade*

    "No thanks"

No offense but those revisionist history books by Kilmeade are awful. It's like a 3rd grade history lesson that's heavy handed.

For the Culper Spy ring, read Washingtons Spies, by Alexander Rose - Who is an actual historian.

Also was the source material for TURN on AMC.

That book sounds interesting, I've always wanted to watch TURN as well and just never have had the time to invest. That said I've been trying recently to knock out some quick reads that have been sitting on my bookshelf for awhile and that one worked. I started Dark Matter today for my next quick read

    25. Dark Matter: Blake Crouch
    26. All Our Wrong Todays: Elan Mastai

Reeeeeeeally enjoyed this book once I got into it (first 100 pages took me almost a month, the last 270 took me two days). It and Dark Matter are interesting juxtapositions of the alternate reality/multiverse concepts - DM was definitely more of a thriller, but AOWT easily comes out on top because of how thoughtfully all the pieces work together (not to mention the better tier of wordsmithing at work). Thanks Truman and LKRFN88jp for the tip.

The next books in line are Babylon's Ashes, 11/22/63, Listen Liberal! and NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories. I think I need to hit the NOFX book first, since it's on loan from an out-of-town library, but any suggestions after that?

It left me speechless in a lot of ways. Gave me a new perspective as a white guy, who was already sympathetic to the struggles of black people in this country. I read books like that and in the back of my head I think how can make this relatable to my uber conservative uncle. I dont think I could, it's an entire paradigm shift.

As far as other suggestions - I see youre reading babylon's ashes. If you havent read the novellas in that series I highly recommend them. Especially The Churn, which is Amos' back story.

Along the lines of listen liberal - The Liberal Redneck Manifesto is a fun read. Not super deep or heavy, but an interesting perspective.

    19. On Looking: Eleven Walks With Expert Eyes -- Alexandra Horowitz (8.5/10)
The idea of this book is a 10 for me but it could have been done a little better so I'll give it 8.5. The author goes for walks around NYC (or other places) with experts in different stuff like an artist, a geologist, a doctor, etc and has them tell her what she sees. There's also a chapter with a 2 year old and with a dog. I love that kind of stuff, finding new things to notice about the world and new ways to see it. I went on a long walk just about every night this week after reading Dharma Bums and this. Also inspired me to read a Sherlock Holmes story this am ("Scandal in Bohemia") because Sherlock was the OG at that pay attention to details and see the cool things you notice game

NOFX is one of my all-time favorite bands, and this book is basically the oral history of the band - including LOTS of near-death experiences due to early 80's LA punk shows, non-stop partying, and unchecked drug abuse. Nothing earth-shattering, but highly entertaining with a surprising amount actual introspection from the guys.

    18. Dark Matter by Blake Crouch 8/10 Dark Matter was good, I enjoyed most of the book and it definitely made me think about physics classes I took in college and the possibilities of the premises.

    19. Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era by James M. McPherson 10/10 Probably the best book I've read on the Civil War so far, it is all encompassing on the war and the many different parts of it. I enjoyed reading the parts about the river battles and western front the most because I haven't read as much about these areas of the war before.

    14. Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World – and Why Things Are Better Than You Think - Hans Rosling (8/10)

Only Human - Definitely my least favorite of the series. Narrative structure didn’t do a whole lot for me and felt unnecessary. And the main issue of the book wasn’t as big as I thought it should be. And then it just ended. I guess I’m happy to have spent time in the world but it definitely peaked in book 1.

Harry Potter - Read it (or rather, listened to it) not even a year after I did so because of the Binge Mode podcast. Things I said a year ago are the same as now. It continues to surprise me just how quick it ends. Especially now, knowing how the rest of the books go. It's like they barely learn anything from school in this one, at least learn things without months going by the wayside in a paragraph or two. Still, really enjoyed it and listening to Binge Mode about it made it even more enjoyable.

Factfulness - This was a really good book but read like a textbook at times which is the only reason for knocking it down to four stars. I learned a ton and in a world that is really bad at times (especially this week) it did show the progress we've made as a human existence, especially since about 1800. I am really happy I read this and would recommend this to everyone, if only to be reminded that there is some good in the world.

On The Ringer. Jason Conception and Malorie Rubin originally started it as a deep dive into Game of Thrones. Last summer they did a pod for every single ep leading up to s7. First season they were like 35-40 minutes per. By season 6 they were over an hour easy.

Well now they're doing the same thing for HP. Last week, Monday - Thursday, they broke Stone into sections (M was 1-5, T was 6-10, etc.) and then did the movie on Friday. Yesterday they talked Quidditch. Chamber is next week, same type of breakdown. I assume Goblet and beyond will take two if not three weeks.

They're both super nerdy and know their shit. Great chemistry. Would recommend. They also did random ones for a while like Billions, Black Mirror, etc.

I don't really know what to rate these books after a while; I give out a lot of 8s and 9s. This was another really good book that I'd have probably given a higher rating to if it was the first I had read on the subject. Given I've read some other similar books like "The Signal and the Noise", this book covered some familiar territory for me but still added new stuff. And it was quite well-written; I definitely went through it quickly.

I think the concept of using a "doppelganger" search to project baseball player performance, Netflix recommendations, etc. is very interesting. I've often wished I could meet someone just like me but a little older so I could ask how their life went on certain stuff and plan accordingly.

This is a tough review for me to give. Yesterday, I texted a friend about how unique of a thriller this was, how different it was from others I had read in the past, BUT, I wanted to see how it ended. And the ending just kind of... happened.

You know how they say that it's not about the destination but the journey? That fits this book very well. The journey was incredible. I'd say the first 75% was awesome. Didn't know where it would go next, who would get hurt, or wtf was actually happening. Then there was a lull before things picked back up.

But the ending. Just kind of there.

Still though, this was a breeze to read. Read 95% of it in three extended sittings and had a lot of fun doing so. Would definitely recommend, even if the ending won't stick with you forever.

    34. Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah Hurari (8/10)
    35. Homo Deus, by Yuval Noah Hurari (7/10)

Into the Drowning Deep - This book was described to me as a good horror book - The movie Abyss if what they found down there had bad intentions. Well, it turns out what was down there was killer mermaids  The kicker is, the book was pretty good. Story telling and characters were good. I just couldn't get past the embarrassment of reading a book about killer mermaids.

1491 - Awesome book. Loved it. Knew a lot of the basics but learned a lot more.

The English Girl - I think this is the worst book in the Allon Series so far. Feels like Silva just mailed it in because he had a book due.

Sapiens - Very good. Makes everything seem like common sense, at the same time talking about how intricate we all are as a group.

    On to Homo Deus.

edit -- Finished Homo Deus. Liked it, but not as much as Sapiens. A well thought out argument, but a little too speculative for me. Essentially making the argument for Skynet happening.

Has many of the same pitfalls that any biography has in probably giving too much credit to its subject. I think reading this before visiting the dome would have made me enjoy my trip just a little more as there are certain aspects of the construction that are still visible that I didn't look for when climbing all those stairs before.

    20. Rules Of Civility (Amor Towles) - 6/10 -
Saw BigRed recommend a different Towles book that looked interesting but it's on hold at the library so I decided to try this one first. It was OK but nothing I'd seek out. Basically, it describes a year in the life of a social-climbing working class girl in NYC. Somewhat Mad Men-y but we don't really get much background on the main character unlike with Don Draper. Towles is obviously a skilled writer but I found some parts of the story unbelievable. Also, despite the main character's upbringing, we only spend time with the wealthy without any discussion of the societal and economic issues of the time.
    21. Little Fires Everywhere (Celeste Ng) - 6.5/10 - This was Goodreads' book of the year last year and I enjoyed parts of it but again, I found some of the story contrived. The story she builds requires the reader to think about race and class in America and the dynamics of a suburban American family and it's worthwhile in that respect. However, some of the characters were flat to me and some of the plot a bit too convenient. It's ultimately the story of two families in a Cleveland suburb (hometown of the author) and their decisions but some of the characters were properly developed while others were one dimensional (and not because she wanted them to be). Ending was pretty meh, too.

    21. The Confidence Game: Why We Fall For It, Every Time -- Maria Konnikova (8.5/10)
A book about the psychology of con artists. Extremely interesting, if a little bit repetitive at times. It's not a history of different con artists but a look at why their tricks work. Anyone can be conned. Sure some people are more gullible than others but even the most shrewd can be conned under the right circumstances because cons work by taking advantage of human nature. It's an unsettling thought. You do get plenty of stories of some of the most famous cons throughout, like a guy who wasn't even a doctor that somehow faked his way onto a Navy ship and performed surgery on all these people.

I read a novel. A contemporary one even! This is this guy's first novel. Came out a couple years ago, has won some prizes. It's the story of a male social worker in Montana and the anarchist types of people living in cabins up there that he works with. The main character is easy/fun to identify with (he's a social worker that wants to help people but he also drinks like a fish, will get in a fistfight etc) and the story is tightly woven with a couple different plots going but never feeling superfluous or off the subject. I guess the theme of it is like these anarchist people, they're crazy, but do they sorta have a point?

Have not seen the movie, but I was reading about it and apparently it is historically bad. From wiki:

Rita Kempley said in The Washington Post, "the director has become one with the buffoons Wolfe scored in his bestseller. He has not only filed Wolfe's teeth but stuck his tail between his legs," and called the film, "A calamity of miscasting and commercial concessions." In Rolling Stone, Peter Travers wrote, "On film, Bonfire achieves a consistency of ineptitude rare even in this era of over-inflated cinematic air bags."

I thought it was really well done. It's set in a Revolutionary War type time and I think worked well with the guns. Similar to Alloy of Law.
