If you're serious about PC gaming, buy a 144hz+ monitor, it will 100% have a displayport port. Honestly if you have a decent gpu, it's going to waste without a proper monitor to capture those frames

The bigger the better...depends on your desk size, do you mind if the keyboard sits on it (really only applies to huge ass pads)

Oh, and cloth. Always cloth. Do not buy a hard surface mousepad

Hypothetically, if I was running two monitors, one being this dumpy HP one off of HDMI and then a nice 144hz+ monitor on displayport, I could get high fps and game on the nice monitor while the other is for basic shit (discord, browser, whatever) that doesn't require that high frame rate?

Correct, no conflict at all with the other monitor being a 60hz monitor, just play all games on the nice one

Also, to remove any conflict whatsoever, you can plug the dumpy monitor into the integrated card (motherboard) and the high refresh rate monitor into the GPU

(you may have to enable this in BIOS)

PS I was thinking about my prior post and maybe having both monitors plugged into the GPU would cause your GPU to heat up unnecessarily because it is simultaneously capturing the frames from your game on one screen and your desktop on the other. If your desktop framerate is uncapped, which is usually the case, I imagine it would cause some heating issues with the GPU which could then cause it to whine and make annoying noises. I don't know for sure though, I only use one monitor on my gaming pc, but I guess it seems to work fine for jplaYa ?

Eh I wouldn’t worry about that. That GPU can handle the DisplayPort and HDMI/DVI just fine. If he’s not used to messing with a BIOS it’s not worth it.

That’s actually how I used to do it. I recently got the Dell GSync’d S2716DG and moved my ASUS VG248QE from my primary to my secondary. Both are 144Hz but I got a deal on the 27 I couldn’t pass up.

    100% accurate.

Further question, my graphics card says it does have a displayport 1.4. The first or second 144hz monitor I saw said displayport 1.2. Are there issues that would arise from this? How strict does it get?

I also have the VG248QE :respek:
I believe as long as the GPU is 1.4 it will support any previous versions of displayport from the monitor. It's backwards compatible. Any one of the nvidia gtx gpus will support this.

They’re backwards compatible. Here’s a good website to familiarize yourself with good and bad dP cables.

My Dell cable that came with the monitor was bad so I went and ordered another one. It’s been great granted I needed it for 4K.

I would highly recommend the VG248QE for your purposes. If you’re playing FPS, it is likely going to be the best things you can do to improve hardware side.

If you’re playing any games that load far distances an SSD is another great way to improve performance and can be pretty cost effective.

Yep. Just be sure you’re formatting your questions properly and you do research on the front end. They prefer specific questions not things like...build me something for gaming. You need to state your budget, preferences, etc.

Start here first. If I’m out of my depth, there are others here who might know.

What do yall think about this laptop? Bought it two years ago and havent used it for gaming.. You think this could handle PUBG and RB6 on moderate settings? Would you give the a thumbs up or down regarding specs?

You might get 30fps out of PUBG on low-med settings
RB6 would run slightly better, 40-60fps

I'm strictly basing that on your graphics card. Your laptop would also benefit greatly from a better SSD (120GB+)

The other specs are fine. 8GB of RAM is "enough" but more RAM is always a wise decision depending on budget

Yeah it’s pretty good. You can really check to see how if you can run games with the freeware program Speccy. The guys who made CCleaner made this. You can also go to https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/battlegrounds/15571/amp for PUBG. Looks like your somewhere in between minimal and recommended.

The main problem with that laptop and laptops in general is that they’re very difficult to upgrade. If you had those specs in a desktop, you could update your system for 300-400 bucks with more RAM and an SSD for more than just your Operating System and see big improvements.

Granted you do lose the ability to take it on trips and mobility. I’ve never been a laptop guy, so I’m biased.

If the SSD is the boot drive then that's all its good for essentially; fast booting. they are very easy to install and configure even in a laptop

don't look at their prices now :feelsbadman:

Just look for what's popular, PUBG aside, the top games on steam often are the most optimized for various pc builds

I play Fortnite, Overwatch, & Rocket League the most

if you're into CS:GO, I imagine it'd run just fine on your laptop

Finally maxed out my 25GB SSD Boot disc. I am considering going with a Samsung 250GB SSD for storage reasons and I heard it has a program where you can copy an old drive like my C: in this case and essentially plug in the new one and everything will jive. Anyone have experience with that or other suggestions?

GPU didn't fix the issue, no signal coming out. On to the motherboard, right? Recommendations? If it matters, I have an Intel i5 cpu, like a 2400k or something like that.

What mobo are you using now? The PC is powering on, you are sure? The monitor is set to the correct display input? Cables securely plugged in? Have you tried connecting a different monitor to it? If the PC is powering on and everything is connected properly you should get a picture on the monitor, regardless what mobo you're running

    I also have the 1060 3GB but with a Ryzen 5 1600 cpu & MSI b350 Tomahawk mobo (cheap)

You need to run your hardware through pc part picker to check for inconsistencies and possibly make a post on r/buildapc if you are still having trouble. see spoiler

This is my best approximation, at work now, but no compatibility issues. I know the mobo is right for sure. I can't remember the RAM, but I definitely have 4 sticks in there, pretty sure they are some GSkill DDR2 stuff.

The PC is powering on, fans whir up, lights on the mobo (no debug error codes on the little led). The monitor scans HDMI and then VGA to see if any signal is coming through and doesn't find anything. Cables secure, GPU firmly in the pci slot, power supplied to the GPU, HDMI plugged into GPU and not the mobo's i/o. Haven't tried another monitor. My tv has an hdmi input obviously so maybe I'll try that this evening.

    It's a tricky one.

Edit: tv also says no signal.

Going to jump back in to Civilization games. Haven't played since 4. Is Civ 6 better than Civ 5? I remember reading about it and thinking they made some pretty huge changes.

You've got back in at a good time. The best mod, CQUI, allows production queuing, excellent trade screens, and so much more. It just got updated to be usable for the Rise and Fall expansion. I've been a civ player since IV and I'm very much into VI with the expansion.

I would, I haven't explored much of the new civs but the governor system is interesting and there is a curious loyalty system that makes it more difficult to found a city far from your capitol. I play tall instead of wide, so I haven't suffered from it yet, but I bet England is now more difficult unless they buffed something. I'm rambling, yes, you should.

They have offline mode which is really good for learning the maps since there’s no in game map or mini map.

There aren’t lots of small engagements. All maps spawn NPCs which are coded to be very dangerous as well as at least 6 player characters depending on the map. The player characters can spawn as PMCs or SCAVs. PMCs are your decked out character with specified loadout. SCAVs are you as a randomly generated loadout where you basically go in and try to scavenge the map and kill any PMCs not paying attention. You would do the same as a PMC however as a SCAV you’re not risking losing any of your gear.

If you’re killed in game you lose everything on your person unless you’ve insured it as a PMC and it’s not taken by whoever looted you. If you’re killed in game as a SCAV you lose everything.

Each map to my knowledge is on a 45 minute counter. Every 15 minutes new SCAVs spawn into the map, it could be player or NPCs.

Loot generated is random though some places generate loot in the same place.

There’s a quest line as well from the different traders so you can level and unlock more items to buy including weapons, meds, and modifications.

The game is still in Beta so things are subject to change every patch and characters may be wiped.

Less than half of the game is playable now. There will eventually be clans and hideouts and such things.

It can be played entirely solo though I believe some quests may involve you grouping.

The action is very real life. You have to manually load bullets into clips etc and different types of meds heal different types of afflictions.

I’ve had a blast so far.
