    20. Rules Of Civility (Amor Towles) - 6/10
    21. Little Fires Everywhere (Celeste Ng) - 6.5/10
    22. I'll Be Gone In The Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search For The Golden State Killer (Michelle McNamara) - 7/10 -
My feelings on this one were somewhat mixed. I enjoyed it as a memoir and can definitely relate to being obsessed about something like McNamara was. She's a pretty good writer and I enjoyed reading about her obsession and learning more about the investigators who have worked the case. That said, she kind of skips around when describing the case and mentions a bunch of possibilities without really fully exploring them. Hard to explain but something about her style when talking about the case left me wanting more. I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I didn't know the killer's identity.
    23. The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World (Stephen Brusatte) - 9/10 - This is one that I really enjoyed. I was one of those kids who had a lot of interest in dinosaurs around age 10 (probably brought on, in part, by Jurassic Park) but really hadn't read much about them as an adult. This is written for a general audience and is easy to follow and understand. It's basically a general overview of what we know now about dinosaurs and how they evolved and changed throughout time while also discussing how we learned about them. He does spend some time on his experiences in paleontology and "famous" guys he's worked with but I found those sections tolerable for the most part.

    23. Where Ghosts Walked: Munich's Road to the Third Reich by David Clay Large This book was very good, it had tons of information about Munich before and during the war and was very readable. It took me longer than it should have to finish it but that was more my fault for putting it off for sometime. Really made me want to visit Munich more than before.

    23. The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom -- Don Miguel Ruiz (6/10)
Was recommended to me by someone as being a very helpful book in your personal life. The author is Toltec which is a type of Native American and he lays out a system of living based on Toltec wisdom. The most resonant quote in the book for me was "We are addicted to being how we already are."

    24. Your Brain At Work: Strategies for Overcoming Distraction, Regaining Focus and Working Smarter All Day Long -- David Rock (8/10)
I like to read any book about the brain, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, etc. Most of the ones I've read focus on education or social life -- never read one that's all about the science of what's going on in your brain at work. This was actually recommended in an HR training class at work but it's not dull and I've been able to apply some of it to my daily work. Read if you work in an office and like understanding the brain.

She is very funny. I found a lot of the stories to be hilarious, and struggled to decide what was true and what was exaggerated.

Glad to hear you liked Spinning Silver even better than Uprooted. I also really enjoyed Uprooted so now I'm excited about SS. Going to probably read it next.

You don't do audiobooks, right? So you read, read it?

    Yeah I read it.

THere's more characters and more world building. Uprooted was a relatively 'small scope story' . Spinning Silver - she opened it up a lot more.

It was a bit longer of a book too, but didnt feel like it.

Im not anti audiobooks or think it's cheating or something.

Chalk it up to my ADD i guess, but my mind always drifts while listening to them and end up missing stuff. Especially in a fantasy novel with weird names and locations.

Ive done audiobooks for non fiction. For whatever reason Im able to digest it better, but I still feel like I have better comprehension reading than listening, so that's the route I go ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

For the record, I am not anti audiobooks either necessarily, or anti Kindle. I am just personally a huge fan of print reading and a) I don't meet enough folks that read and b) those that do are often audiobooks or Kindle. So I get excited by an old fashion way person like myself. Don't want to see books go the way of the dinosaur

I used to be like TC and then I fell in love with my kindle (still in love with it) and rarely read print anymore.

I would constantly give Gin Buckets hell for audiobooks, then I started having a 50 minute drive to work and now I listen to audiobooks all the time as well.

Usually have one audiobook and one kindle book going at all times

I'm probably half Kindle half print. I'd probably read more print if I had to buy them all but downloading ebooks from the library is so incredibly easy.

I find that I lack the attention span for audiobooks. I don't have a long drive to work so I'm never "held hostage" in that way.

Yeah, the only thing keeping me off audiobooks/podcasts is I don't have a commute.

I do think print is the 100% best method for remembering the most information. When you only hear words vs read them, you don't remember as much. When you look at something on a screen where stuff moves around vs where it stays static, you don't remember as much. Other methods obviously have advantages going for them in portability and such.

Besides the way it feels in your hand, there's virtually no difference between a kindle and physical book. It's not like youre just scrolling down the page on a kindle. You read one page at a time, just like a book.

As far as remembering shit - iirc from school some people are audio learners, some are visual. Id imagine some people retain more listening than reading, but idk.

Liked this one OK. It's reasonably well-written but because of the heavy subject matter and the fact that it contains a bunch of names I can't pronounce (it focuses primarily on Poland and Hungary in addition to East Germany), it's not the easiest read. From the little I know, I think she probably romanticizes pre-war Poland and Hungary a bit too much when comparing it to system the Soviets brought in. I'd have liked to have seen more on the Czechs but this book was already 600 pages so I can see why she limited its scope. It sometimes felt like it needed an overarching theme and it sometimes came off as "here's the facts". Still, I didn't know much about the period and learned a lot.
    25. Propaganda (Edward L. Bernays) - 8/10 - Struggled with how to rate this one as it definitely accomplishes its goals (explaining the utility of propaganda to Bernays' potential customers). Bernays is the father of public relations; among other things, he got women smoking and Americans eating bacon for breakfast. Bernays is forthright in his belief that a democratic society can only function with a small group of enlightened men molding the tastes and beliefs of the simple populace. Another goal of this book for Bernays was to "take back" the meaning of the word propaganda, which had to just then begun to have negative connotations in society. He comes off as a bit naive when it comes to the practices of big business and politicians, based on what we know now. Still, a quick (150 pages or so), interesting read.

Think I heard about one of his campaigns on a podcast. Maybe Freakonomics or Backstory but I can't be sure.

Pretty interesting life story. He's a double nephew of Freud and used psychoanalysis a lot. He was also involved in the '54 Guatemala coup.

The English Spy - Love this series. Rarely feels like it gets stale. Im almost caught up, so taking suggestions on another similar series to start. Right now Im thinking Mitch Rapp

Thrawn - great if youre a SW fan.

Into the Lions Mouth - This book was incredible. I knew nothing about this guy, and IM shocked he's not more well known. So many of the stories were to brazen. This dude had massive balls.

Yes the Rapp series was great before Flynn died, haven't read much since but the guy who took over for him is supposed to be pretty good.
Sadly, the same cannot be said for the people writing for Tom Clancy now.

Yeah I haven’t read a Clancy but not by Clancy book in a few years. Kyle Mills seems to be doing a pretty good job to me with the Rapp series, it might not be as good but at least like 8/10 as compared to Flynn

It was ok. This is the freshman reading book for University of South Carolina this year. It's actually in the nonfiction style that I like to read anyway, but I didn't love it. It has a little too much consumerist cheerleading baked into it for my taste. How to ask good questions, I'm interested. How to monetize them, eh

I know a lot of people ITT have read "Devil in the White City" and that's what I'm reading now...almost done and spoiler, I will be rating it 10/10. Book is phenomenal. Some parts have made me feel short of breath (and not just the serial killer parts.)

I found the first third of Sapiens (all the pre-historic human evolution) really awesome, riveting reading but as the last third focused more and more on modern man I had a harder time sticking with it. After the halfway mark I had to set some specific pages/day goals to get it done and back to the library, otherwise it would've dragged out forever (which is what's happening with my current book that my old man recommended: Post-Capitalist Society, by Peter Drucker). It was still interesting, just more esoteric.

    24. Shattered Spaces: Encountering Jewish Ruins in Postwar Germany and Poland by Michael Meng 7/10 This book was interesting in seeing how the ruins from World War II were dealt with throughout Germany and Poland. It only covered five cities throughout the region but it was crazy to see how the governments decided which ruins to restore or destroy and use the land for something else.

    25. All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr 9/10 This book was very well written and on a topic that I love but for some reason I couldn't quite get into it fully. It took me quite a bit longer to read than I thought it would but I have no real complaints about it. All of the characters were interesting and developed I think over the book but for some reason it never really got to a point where I couldn't put it down.

Much better from Towles (when compared to Rules of Civility). A fun and engaging story and the Count is a beautifully written character. Towles is a master of prose and easy to read. The first 30% or so of the book is somewhat slow but it picks up steam as it goes. The situation the Count finds himself in (basically, he's banished to stay in the same hotel for the rest of his life by the Bolsheviks) feels a bit unrealistic but, in fairness, it is a novel. Thanks BigRed for bringing it to my attention.
    27. Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic (Sam Quinones) - 9.5/10 - Read based on TC recommendation and I'm glad that I did. Quinones tells the story of the opiate epidemic from all angles: academics, pharma, doctors, governmental employees, drug distributors and dealers, and addicts. Despite having read a good bit about this stuff, I had never heard of the Xalisco Boys or their unique delivery system. I guess that it gets a little repetitive at times but I don't blame the author there; this is the kind of nonfiction book that people who don't read nonfiction should be reading and perhaps the repetition helps there. Highly recommend.

This book was very interesting and engrossing. The serial killer parts made my skin crawl and the parts about the fair were filled with connections to other historical events. Overall a supremely fun read, but one that will also help you understand Gilded Age America and just how much impact the 1893 World's Fair had on our country that's still felt today.

    Currently reading:
The Prince and the Pauper -- Mark Twain (needed something breezy to read on a plane)
Sapiens -- Yuval Noah Harari (man this book is FIRE; enjoying tf out of it)

Tangman, Truman and CBH like this.
