I’ve kept letters given to me three years ago by students when I left my ESL academy in Korea. They’re as precious to me as anything I’ve ever received.
It was dusty today saying goodbye. Tomorrow staff breakfast is going to be fucking gut wrenching. I could barely keep it together going one on one with people. Also got an amazing letter from an amazing kid and some of my ELL'S WHEW
Had to put everything in the center of my room since they’re painting this summer. HUGE pain in the ass.
More depressing is the masking tape holding the desk together. Schools need proper funding so they can provide masking tape & clear tape.
I had to move everything out to another building, including all the physics lab stuff because my room is getting completely redone.
Yesterday was my last day (hopefully) of subbing; was doing a long-term job at a school I'm interviewing with, along with several others. Just want to get something nailed down in the next couple weeks. Can't count the number of times over the past year when I've seen some element of instruction in another teacher's class and started the thought "When I get my own classroom..."
Cut it about as close as possible, but finally got a job lined up for this year. New teacher orientation tomorrow. Equal mixture of excitement and relief.
Fucking school shootings man. No students are ever allowed outside now unless moving from building 1 to building 2. Also, if any outside door remains open for more than 3 minutes an alarm sounds
Yeah, sixth graders. During my methods work I had sworn it off, but changed my mind while subbing for the spring semester. Theyre still young enough that they aren't over school yet.
Don’t blame you for that, I teach two subjects and one is state tested and it sucks because I have to devote so much time to pre-testing and testing multiple times from January to May it’s a drain.
I'm teaching American History and Sociology this year, so it'll be Juniors and Seniors. First teacher workday is two weeks from tomorrow.
Good thing is I don’t have to make any new lesson plans since I have World History for the 3rd straight year. Hell, I really don’t have to do anything since all my material is good.
We are all in on the standards movement. But we also have to cut down our kids who aren't college career ready by half
We started last Thursday. The school has a new admin and you can tell just by looking at the difference in behavior between the 6ths and the 7ths/8ths how shitty the previous one was. Small example: we gather the kids in one of the gyms before dismissing to class in the morning. The gyms got brand new floors over the summer ($60k) and the students were explicitly told not to chew gum. One teacher asked an 8th grader to please throw his gum away. Apparently he looked straight at her, pulled the gum out of his mouth, threw it on the floor and stamped on it just to make sure it stuck. Hooray, sixth graders!
Same here, new principal. He was the AP here my first 1 1/2 years and left to become head principal in another district. He came back in full force, running the school with an iron fist and I love it.
Just accepted a position to teach HS (after being a project manager for the last 15 years). Quick, teach me everything you all know by Monday.
God we need a new principal at my HS in the worst way. Just completely aloof and awkward with students and staff. 2 girls almost got in a fight on Tuesday and he's just standing there like a shmuck and doesn't interact with either student post incident. Or at the welcome back breakfast, he just makes his plate and goes back to his office.
Ok, follow-up question. My room looks like I don’t give a fuck and I’d rather it look like I do give a fuck. The main office has a poster printer and poster laminator so basically everyone makes whatever posters they want to hang on their walls. Thoughts? I’m the only business teacher in the school, btw - so the only thing I’ve printed out are reports from the bureau of labor and statistics and economic theories. I was thinking of adding a hang in there cat to make it a little more lively.
Really the biggest advice shawnoc is routines, routines, and routines develop them and live by them because to me that’s the biggest key to classroom management
Year four of 1 to 1 tech started disastrous for the fourth straight year and our tech director resigned last Friday
